I don't like the game. Fantasy stuff is not my kind of thing, I find it too gay but that's just my personal opinion and reading thousands of lines of text is also not my idea of strong gameplay...
i totaly agree that for dragon age origins a mouse and keyboard are needed to truly get into the gameplay. but the thing i disagree on is that you said the 3 other character are mostly played by the computer, you can indeed have the computer take control of those 3, but you also have the option to put in your own form of strategy for each character. you can make em do even nothing but standing there until they die from to many blows to the head :P
i don't think anyone in their rightful mind would say dmc or ninja gaiden are button mashers. their heightened level of difficulty forces you to utilize combos and balance defense and offensive maneuvers, but even baldur's gate, one of my favorite games, played out better than this. dragon age has a stop and go, kind of knights of the old republic feel that isn't fluid or enjoyable at all. plus, as much as i love baldurs gate, it's over a decade old and its gameplay is from the stone age.
the great thing about dmc and ng is the fact that it is indeed easily accessible as a button masher. you can pick up and start throwing combos in no-time, but in order to excel in the game without dying a million times, you're going to have to master its intricacies and learn when to block, evade, and attack all seamlessly to succeed. the game forces you to become better as a player and sooner or later you absolutely have to grow out of that button mashing mode
the boss battles are amazing, but the puzzle elements are often more tedious and frustrating that what i bargained for. overall, i wish i had played both games back in their hayday, but even to today's standards they're fairly enjoyable. definitely pumped for god of war 3
well.. yeah that was an exageration on my side (personally i love ng2 and yes it is deep)
But you get the idea: how do you see yourself pulling combos with a party of 4, while casting spells, flanking etc. - it would have to be a different game, diferent genre..
The stop and go thing happens on the console versions where you can't issue more than one order without un-pausing.. among others things..
Stone age or not, BG2 is still waay above many.. in depth ;)
i dont think you can compare gameplay of dmc or ninja gaiden with dragon age. The gameplay is suppose to be tactical, atleast on the pc version. The reason you say this gameplay is from the stone age is ppl want to cater to beer guzzling pretzel munching tards who just wanna see things die at the press of a button. Im a fan of dmc but u cant really call the combat tactical tedious platform puzzles have been getting more irritating than puzzling especially in dmc4.
it's not actually that i'm comparing the two games, but rather that im stating that i prefer the fast, fluid, visceral combat seen in ninja gaiden over the slow, sluggish, poor-controlling combat seen in dragon age. while da offers a much more tactical combat approach, i personally would rather play out battles in real time at utilize quick timing, skilled combos, and awesome finishing moves rather than pause the game every second to use healths, switch weapons, etc...just a preference
all huge free roaming games have tons of bugs oblivion, fallout 3, two worlds - you name it, i dont think it should be named as a flaw because its bound to happen
you know, that's actually a fairly true statement, but the reason why i still consider it a flaw is because the game still looks below average. for their time, oblivion and fallout 3 looked phenomenal, same with mass effect, and i was able to forgive their bugs, which were fewer than in dragon age, because as a whole they looked great. dragon age however doesn't look good at all and it's bugs and glitches were more frequent than in those games. i may have deducted .25 off the score for this
gee the poor graphics arent due to the developers ,its due to this game being played on a dated xbox360.and as for the gameplay play it on a pc with a mouse and a keyboard and it opens up a whole new world and really is the only way to play a classic rpg
hence why i wrote, "NOTE THAT THIS REVIEW IS PRIMARILY OF THE XBOX 360 VERSION" as clearly seen in the info bar to the right. I also clearly stated that i would have preferred a keyboard and mouse over the 360 controller. even on the pc this game is still not visually impressive.
you know, mass effect tried doing it with a shooter/rpg blend and succeeded for the most part, so i don't see why it would be so difficult to combine great action with an rpg...
its different because swordplay its faster and has + nuances than lets say shooting, i enjoyed games with rules and shooting too being the last one fallout 3, but for tradicional rpg´s there is 2 paths: aactio rpg (like demon souls, or diablo) who have nonstop action but low depth or games like neverwinter nights who have lots of depth but many rules and a system more strategic. P.S: i have it for ps3 and i love how it is + action oriented.
Decent review man, but like you said a keyboard is preferred and I've heard that the PC version has better graphics and a more manageable strategic combat system.
The glitches aren't apparent in the PC version, again. But looks awesome and Bioware have never let me down.
Great review, Tyler. Really psyched about this game, currently have it in my possession but I am waiting until Thanksgiving break to enter the Dragon Age world. With MW2 here, and L4D2, etc., hitting stores next week, it'll be rough to alternate the titles, so I'm setting enough time away because, like Mass Effect and Bauldar's Gate, I know I'll get hooked on the game.
So, what we should come away from this game, is its done moral decision gameplay really well and what you say has far-reaching consequences? Even in KOTOR, all the branching paths would lead to one end, so this is nice to hear that they've not done that (it's no hard feat; see heavy rain).
Great review, Tyler. I'm really enjoying it a lot myself. Besides a few glitches here and there, definitely a very enjoyable experience and probably one of the best RPGs of the year if not the best. ^_^
The biggest fail from your part was playing it on console.

@oEDLIo There is nothing wrong with playing it on the console -_- This PC vs 360 vs Ps3 is so stupid :P It is the same game both ways

whaat are you talking about there.. dmc and ninja gaiden ??
This is the successor to baldur's gate - a tactical rpg, not a buttton masher.

Bayonetta could be considered a button masher.
You're right though, DMC and ninja gaiden are fairly tactical.
