  • Marion did indeed deserve it and cate blanchett should have recieved an honorable mentioned because WOW she was great as a young bob dylan. i think all the dislikes are uneducated die-hard ellen page worshipers. but are you serious you actually think ellen was better than marion? how much do you know about edith piaff or bob dylan damn kids of my generation they just think "JUNO" juno is one my favorite movies actually page was great in it yet even she said she did not think she deserved to win

  • cate is the runner up

  • Actually she is the 2007 Best Actress winner because La Vie En Rose is a 2007 film. Kate Winslet is the 2008 Best Actress winner.

  • She deserved it:)

  • Yes, I'm glad she won

  • Marion.. Sad but true, don't go to Hollywood... If you go there maybe you'll suffer the curse (Hunt, Paltrow, Swank, Berry and Witherspoon) or you'll stay in the limbo (Roberts, Kidman and Theron). You must stay in Europe Better roles in better places. Hollywood losts you not you

  • Four french women: Claudette Colbert (born in France but took the american citizen) Simone Signoret (Born in Germany but lived in France since three years old) and the all french Juliette Binoche and Marion Cotillard

  • Oh yeah, now that I just checked it, Claudette Colbert WAS born in France, so she would be the first woman born in France to win Best Actress...I assume then that Marion is the second.

I think I got confused and meant to say that Marion is the first woman to win Best Actress for a role spoken entirely in French.

  • But Room at the Top wasn't a French movie!

  • What about Claudette Colbert?, she was born in Paris, France. But after all, she takes the american nationality after the marriage. So then only french actresses who won an Oscar are Juliette Binoche (Best Actress in a Supporting Role) and Marion Cotillard (Best Actress in a Leading Role)

Marion makes history that night. Only Sofia Loren and her are the only female actresses who won an Oscar for a performance in a foreign language film. Bravo, Marion!!!

  • ICLP87, you forgot "casque d'or" Simone Signoret !!!

  • Marion is the first person woman in France to win a Best Actress Oscar. Simone Signoret was born in Wiesbaden, Germany.

But yes, you are correct in saying that Marion is not the first person to win for a French performance. I think the poster meant to say first French actress (born in France, that is) to win Best Actress.

  • There was not a Frenchest actress than Simone Signoret, this is not the point. She was born in Wiesbaden because her father was a teacher there...

  • Just like the Mayor of Paris was born in Tunisia because his father was a military there, the French elections candidate Ségolène Royal was also born in a military base in Sénégal...I was born in Madagascar, French pieds noirs like Marcel Cerdan were born in other parts of the world then belonging to France etc... But her performance was in English, in a British film, while Marion played in a French-speaking movie. ;-)

  • I know, but I was just saying that Marion was the first woman actually born IN France to win Best Actress...

  • NOT the first person to win for a French performance--that was Simone Signoret in the 60s for Room at the Top.

  • Simone Signoret got the Oscar for a British movie, English Spoken ! Strange but true
