tooo true hawkmoon.........i remember sitting on a train from charring x, to sidcup....singing the words to all the madmen,,in my head.,and i gave a sweet to a lovely little innocent girl on the next seat....that was the beautiful england of the 70s.
youm may as well stik your soul on the far side of town,,,,,long gone r those days...
you cant look at them these days for fear of being branded a pedo or a sex pest.
This song is so haunting and disturbing, but true. About Bowie's half brother who had schizophrenia and was in a mental hospital. Turned out the "mad" people were more sane than the doctors. Reminds me of my friend this song x
I still believe I was interned in one of these Asylums in a previous life, At one point in my life when I was about 22 I was taken to Cherry Knowles Asylum in Prudhoe, but after one viewing of the place I felt so familiar and so terrified of the place that my family decided to keep me out out of Psychiatric care !
This song reminds me of the naval phy ward. day after day they take some brain away. they fuckin did with their medications. They send you home all medicated up with a pension and all. you come home your family ,high school freinds and every girl you once knew will turn away from you. thats reality my freinds kits a miracle i haven"t blown my head off. Iques i got more guts then kurt ever did you come home and live with the pain and suck it up. thats all she wrote!!
@frank02111 Stay strong friend. There's not many who understand. This is my son's login, sorry for talking on his but I'm downloading at the same time. There's more like us so you just keep passing on the knowledge. Many hugs from Dawniebee. XXX
@jusTice95767 Thanks for your response I appriciate it very much. I am back at my meetings and I just got my 90 day chip. I beleive this may be my only salvation at my age of 51.
I first heard this in 1975 it had a profound effect - I have just retired as a community mental health nurse! - I have not listened to it for years but can still sing all the words (not that any one else would want to listen) Its a profound (and prophetic) work verging on genius, but where have all the cold grey mansions gone in the last 30 years? The song is just as good.
Great song. I lived near Banstead, and so Cane Hill and what might have gone on there was stuff of legend when I was at school. Later I worked at Horton and St. Ebba's in Epsom. Once there were as many as 6 or 7 mental hospitals in Epsom; I wonder how many are left now? Of course, now we have "Care In The Community". What a brilliant idea that was.
Political and religious thought always has been dangerous, worse in some places than others. Trouble is, nowadays, you can't have thoughts on race, sex, size, children or just about anything without running the risk of arrest. In fact, free thought has just about been outlawed.
Depending on who you are of course. Great song by David though I have also been listening to The Sex Pistols God save the Queen and I Want to be an Anarchist Its like everyone knows whats really going on but few talk.
Yeah, but the government is a consensual institution, it only exists because we allow it to. If it's getting to the point where it's erasing our natural born liberties then there is absolutely no reason to continue it's existence.
That is true and very easy to say but not so easy to accomplish. Most people are fairly apathetic and also liberties disappear very slowly so that you don't notice them going. To accomplish the change would require a strong leader to appear (probably a thug that you would never want to associate with normally) and very likely considerable violence. Then what are you left with? A worse situation?
Or To truly accomplish a meaningful revolution we revolve the means of revolution. IN these times all you need is to know how to present yourself unlike "an idiot" and as long as feel your point of view isn't isolating, which it most likely will be, you can influence people greatly. I kinda hate influencing though and I'm in a great bind
@intothetopcorrupt Revolution generally leads, in most cases, to a shift in the powers above but little change for the lower classes. Look at the soviets if you want a lesson on the cost of Revolution.
@DukeVonCheesus the soviets are a bad example because the leader of the revolution lenin died and then stalin murdered trotsky and if you have to murder somebody to get into power it's sort of whack. the equivalent is america goes through the revolutionary war yet benjamin franklin and thomas jefferson are also both killed and there is no general platform from which to build the country. Churchill said it best" Lenin was the man who destroyed russia, but also the man who could have saved it."
@intothetopcorrupt yer an idiot, you have been cotrolled yer whole life by an invisable absolutely corrupt all powerful undethroneable government. to think we the people have any say at all in any thing that matters,is way beyond stupid, its dangerous!!!!!
@hawkmoon03111951 what? YOu can think whatevery ou want and say whatever you want. You can't get arrested they can just maniuplate you to feel scared about saying things, but you don't have to sliten to those feelings
@zdawg11000 great comment gets you thinking though they' ve genetically engineard people to be more servile, then theres verichip, birth certs, culling by war, radiation , the list goes on If the government doesnt trust the people , this shows that the government is getting too familiar with its employer You just cant get the staff these days, how much more film footage do we need of the nanny abusing our children and stealing from our home before we dismiss them and do the job ourselves
I love Cane Hill, shame its all vandalised - demolished. This song was made for Bowies half brother Terry who was comitted to Cane Hill and killed him self on the rail tracks .... sad...
i watched this again - and it's one of the best picture-compilations i've ever seen on you tube....the OP really understands the meaning of the song...and its dark margins, its psychogeographical realism...
I thought this was great.I love this track.Have personal experiences of such places, love the black and white, for they are, as is said, mansions cold and grey, with so many sharp lines and right angles. Who could 've been expected to 'get better'? Thankyou for this.X
love the basslines in this song.

David's brother was in a psychiatric institution & it had a profound effect on the early Bowie. I believe he later died there.
