Hardcore is a genre of Thrashy Punk Metal that came about in the 80's. Look up groups like Nuclear Assault, Dark Angel, Sodom and Exumer. These are examples of Hardcore/Thrash/Death Metal.

And adding Death Metal into the sound, creating Grindcore. See: Early Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror, etc.

Modern Hardcore would again merge with Metal, creating Metal/deathcore.

None of these are Metal sub-genres.
