Try it around your neck. If you don't like it, you can adjust the knot, up and down the cord, until you're very satisfied, only then, cut! This is more precise. Moreover: if you cut before making the knot, you don't know how much of the cord the knot is going to "stole" from the cord, and you can discover it's too short after the knot. If you cut after the knot you can't go wrong!

I have a question.
If you do get something (like food) inside the ocarina, can you just rinse it out with water? it won't damage the ocarina will it?
