This is some of the best music in history. Cocker and Russell are both masters of their craft. And does anyone else think Pamela Polland is cute as hell? That is her in the top hat at 1:33, right? Or am I mistaken?
@68Wildhorse , I DO. She is. So her name is Pamela Polland... was going to ask it, I´ve thought the same from the very first time I saw this record on TV many, many years ago. Thanks. BTW I love the way she shouts and shifts the tone in final notes. Hard to hear, but highlights to me.
@68Wildhorse , I mean for instance at 5:04. GREAT. I always wonder how much of these little details are planned by the conducting guy (here Cocker, Russell, I don´t know) and how much comes from the rest of performer´s own initiative.
In any case I´d like to point out how much I like the cameramen and film editing team work. Don´t know who directed the film and selected the scenes for the final cut but he did my favourite concert. It was my first multicamera experience and I was amazed.
@jstanley011 it was from an album made into a movie. i listened to the album more than a kazillion times when it first came out and i was in 7th grade!
1970.....Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, Bobby Keyes and the rest of the grease band opens "Uncle Sams in Minneapolis"..now......1st Avenue. They set up their practice area in the hotel meeting rooms.....Holiday Inn Central in Minneapolis.....god what a great time....great music.......Mary, Dave, Mark and I got to see and hear them before anyone else did....what a blast..
Anyone know whether the sister in the chorus is Mary--soon to be Mary Russell--Leon's wife of the mid to late 70s? I'm in love her one way or another.
@dantean no the beautiful lady in the choir is Claudia Linnear. She sang backup for Leon for a few years. She was at the Concert for Bangladesh a year after this and did Leon's 1972 European tour where she made quite the impression on Mick Jagger-she was the partial inspiration for "Brown Sugar" and her romance with David Bowie inspired him to write "Lady of the Grinning Soul" for her. Beautiful love song about a beautiful woman.
There's no way they were 'tripping'. They couldn't have hit this hard on acid. I ain't sayin that they didn't have a couple of beers and smoke a joint before going on, but they aren't on acid.

i'm sure joe and the englishmen were on drugs but my brother and i weren't. we were beer drinkers. it didn't matter to me though what joe and the band did bad those days...we just love their muic to this day. cheers!

Leon Russell and Tom Petty are the only two people I've seen who can pull off wearing a top hat. Especially Russell, he looks great.
