Great!. The bassist is Paraguayan, and I can proudly brag he was a student of mine in Paraguay who started with me at 17 ys old around 1981. Shortly after that, he became my bassist in my professional gigs (mostly along with Paraguayan pianist Lobito Martínez, Berklee alumnus, and myself in arrangements and guitar. I was the first Paraguayan at Berklee College of Musica in a special Summer Course, "for pros" level.

I remember when I first starting listening to Gato way back in the late 70's. His music was intense and had a fiery latin jazz sound to it.

I find that he is quite imaginative- being a strong figurehead in a genre such as jazz, which has the tendency to be rather predictable. Until you count that few that stick out. Gato sticks out, I can't differentiate most sax players with one another. Gato is indisputably the only one that produces that sound.

Greatest player, best sax song ever, well... Gato's audience hasnt listened to much jazz, but it knows what it likes. Gato came along in the 70's, when when the Miles-Trane-Hancock axis was finished as we knew it, and besides, Gato's music was more geared to a pop audience.... he had a recognizable sound, and had drama when he played, but yeah, not much imaginitive range.. that's a hard thing for an artist to sustain over the years. I listened to my share of Gato, but moved on when he didnt...
