  • you could always make a book of these videos.

people need to have something read when they are stuck in traffic...

attaching post mortem of comments could even serve to write paper for some BS or even PhD if united with such useless endeavour as devising artificial philosophical interlocutor based on datamined conversations in alt.sci.philosophy or some other such cyberplaces. btw you did hear about program that wrote pseudo-paper and it even got submitted, though in some very low quality mag.

  • Stay on youtube my friend :)

  • I hear you on the anonymity part, which is why I just put my real name as my user name. I would, however, note that anonymous review is a cornerstone of scientific research: typically you don't know who reviewed your paper, which does allow them more freedom to say what they think about it. Also, I think the reason that more scholars aren't on YouTube is exactly what you said at the begining: they are coming here without the panoply of institutional props to power protecting them. (cont)

  • (cont, to P.A.) Also, there is more filters protecting them from finding out what people really think of them. I mean, we all pick up some people's books, give them a cursory glance, and say to ourselves "this guys is a total idiot". All youtube does is make it easier for you to overhear those inner voices, which currently are being filtered out. I found interesting your comments on power/knowledge disparities (cont)

  • (cont, to P.A.) You say something on Youtube: somebody else says "bullshit!!!!" Is the second party at a knowledge/power disadvantage? Dick Cheney said there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. My 13-year old said "bullshit". Cheney probably could have mustered a better case than my 13 year old, and he sure as hell had more power than my 13 year old. But my kid was right, it was bullshit, even though all he could do to justify his view was say "it just makes no sense"(cont)

  • (cont) so if somebody objects, its not really obvious whether they are (a) ignorant (b) a troll, or (c) giving feedback you should be listening too. Narcisism: yes, Youtube is the most narcisistic thing every invented :-) Its interesting that you say you want to get rid of some of your old vids......this means that being on youtube has changed you, i.e. given you feedback which you feel is valuable enough to incorporate it.

  • YouTube is not even an experiment. I agree that it facilitates, perhaps even promotes. narcissism. No one is left untouched by this on YouTube.

  • I hope you get past the youtube initiation rite and keep making vids.....my 2 cents.....c'mon, if I can keep trying, I know you can, eh?

  • I am very much in agreement with PianoIsTheRemedy.

Take some time out from it ... Just don't scrap it all yet, there really is no need ... even if you don't do a video for a while, just leave your channel up & maybe just do a video when you REALLY have something that you've got to share with people.

you don't even need to have a comments section if you don't want, just say your thing ... MAKE IT DISPOSABLE if that works for you.

    Find your own way

    Just don't go!

  • Corey,

I won't presume to tell you what to do, but don't leave YT! Your contributions are valuable and they add a kind of balance that is much appreciated by many of us. Mahalo for all you do.

    Aloha, Aliman.

  • There's the day's one's say's ya's and there's the day's one's say's nay's. Some day's nothing say's at all. All i could do is LAUGH at my s'es!. Thanks Prof, good edutorial vids.

  • Interesting video... I've put up a number of intellectual-type videos, and I'll say that I often argue certain positions or discuss certain topics as a layman with the intent or desire for correction by others who might know more about a certain topic than I do. In your persona as a professor, I can see how it would be difficult to "compartmentalize" your youtube self as an anonymous figure without contraints on what you say...

  • I think people use youtube for different reasons, and it might be hasty to make generalizations about it based on individual experience. For instance, assuming that the permanence of youtube videos has a negative connotation as compared to written word could be a stretch. I often privatize or delete videos after they have served a purpose. I view youtube as more of a means of communication with people of shared interests than a medium for permanent intellectual record....

  • That said, youtube can be whatever you make it. I think it should be fun for you and enriching to your life if you choose to do videos. If you lose that spark that makes it fun, it's probably time to take a break. Perhaps the most difficult thing to wrap one's mind around is the inability to categorize or understand the medium in a simple way. Because of the extreme variability in the purpose of content, it's hard to draw conclusions about what youtube is for and how to use it.

  • I enjoy your videos, though, and it would be a shame to lose you so early. In this medium you're going to get sociopathic behavior, a variety of people who will stroke your ego perhaps undeservedly, and many who it will seem more of a chore than a pleasure to interact with. I think a youtuber finds bliss in being able to find ignore that which is not beneficial and focusing on the interactions that make it meaningful for you subjectively.

  • Internet culture and communication is fundamentally different from other media and forms of social interaction; after years one tends to take this for granted and to view it as neither positive nor negative. I doubt anyone's feelings have actually been hurt online.

I really enjoy your videos and ideas. Don't be a stranger; make some videos now and then, time permitting, and please leave your others up. It would certainly impoverish YouTube's sparse intellectual content if you leave permanently.

  • You don't need to be worried about hurt feelings. I think I have approached our conversation(s) -- as I approach all academic conversations -- dispassionately. Feelings aren't a factor. My personal friends understand that when they are dealing with me friendship shouldn't get in the way of rigor.

  • Thanks for your videos and friendship, Corey.

  • There is also something, which I have learned in the recent weeks. ( From some bad mistakes of mine )

This is the fact , that in order to have normal and better social interactions, we need to find new techniques to stay above our own Belief Systems so that we can enter into the World of the Belief System of the other Person, with which we are socially interacting with, to learn about the other Person first, so to speak.

Then the communication would be richer and better.

  • Love your videos. Don't let the trolls slow your train down.

"And if people refused to listen we'd just play louder and faster" James Hetfield.

  • I think, we should forget these «terms» like «Trolls» and so on altogether and sacrifice it in favor of something, which is more helpful, more engaging, more effective, so we can solve all these questions and problems we have in a mutual and constructive way.

The fact, that «destructive Elements» always exist is in reality not an Obstacle, but in contrary a benefitial Challenge.

  • Don't be a stranger. Throw us a bone every now and then. Your ideas are very interesting. Thank you for your efforts.

  • youtube is a strange world,it tends to exist in extremes. Extreme honesty and Extreme dishonesty and the two traits cover each others tracks as they go through a cycle. Not always and necessarily does this occur , but I can see how those are easy options to unknowingly be part of.

are their benefits to this? things gained here that never seem to surface in real life? its almost like a more raw hyper accentuated reality here, maybe that means a great testing site for philosophical ideas ????

  • Your comment is great...

It is the way people act when they have no social sanctions...

    Again, excellent observations

  • woah cool, thanks... i am always trying to get the nerve to comment more, sometimes they just come out unknowingly while iam so focused on a thought and i dont realize what it means till i let it out... ive watched a few of your videos and totally loved them!

  • Thanks...Hope to read more of what you have to say.

  • There is also something I have forgotten previously, and this has something to do with «how» we usually come into contact with other Members of our Societies, and again, there are certain Laws of Nature involved here, which «rule» somehow , how and with whom and why we are getting in contact with and engaged with. This is also something «mechanical» which «narrows» somehow the Range of Persons we have these engagements

So now through the Study of this, we can «widen» this range

  • So true

  • It is of course a matter of personal decision this of yours, but to tell you the truth, if I where in your position, I would continue these social engagements and interactions.

The thing here which is important to remember, is to drive it in the same direction, from where it has started, so it becomes something «intentional»

  • Also, this realization of yours, that you don't know if you can continue this or not, is something important to anticipate.

It often matters in Life, not so much actually «What» exactly we are doing, but that we continue to drive it into the same direction.

This has something to do with «physical laws» in nature, it is so to speak some sort of Gap, where it mechanically comes to an halt.

The correct thing to do here, is to put «Energy» in here, so that it can be «bridged» and continue.

  • I was going to tell a bit about 2:20 You see here, the point here is to come to the realization, that these «feelings» which have a bit to do with «morals, ethics and etiquette» and so on are something mechanical. So the correct thing to do here would be to study this mechanically not giving in to them. May be especially to Academics this might be something important to understand.

The more we experience this the better our chances to replace it some day with «real» morals.

  • I sincerely hope this isn't the last we see of you. I have found you vids fascinating and informative and certainly diamonds amid the often frivolous dust of youtube.

A lot of users feign being hurt or insulted simply because they don't like having their ideas sucessfully challenged. It is one of the many tactics that one has to put up with unfortunately. I think it is worth the effort most of the time.

    Good Luck

  • Isn't there a presumption here that that which is put up on the fly was not mulled over for hours, days, weeks, months, or even years? I know that my videos are not merely momentary sparks of ideas that are then thrown together and uploaded. What I upload is generally information I've contemplated for far more than just the time it took for the idea to hit me and the time it takes for the video to be uploaded. And I'm not alone in this.

Thanks for your time here, hope to see more of your stuff.

  • Being immersed in Youtube culture is a wild thing. I think it really is a step to tearing down further barriers to information flow and cross-cultural understanding.

Remember, there are lots of idiots and trolls here. You never agreed to educate those who are not prepared, nor to allow the trolls to play their games with you. The block button can be valuable.

As far as the "narcissism" of everyday people immortalizing their thoughts and expression?

  • (continued)

There is still the scarcity of time. This allows more people to seek and find that which they desire to pursue. The vast majority of the books in the libraries are less interesting and more redundant than many of voices I have found here.

  • Too bad the closed minded ones stick together too much and don't do self-exploration and other exploration, i.e. the trolls who are not interested in using this make-shift community's full potential. I do agree that here on Youtube there are people that have accepted vast opportunities to learn about this planet's culture, customs, habits, stupidity and genius, this planet's evil (necessary and unnecessary). This planet is a peculiar one.
