Yeah, the acting is quite poor in this. Still, never knew there was an earlier BBC version, it's easy to see why the BBC pulled this from broadcast, far too raw for 70's tv.

As soon as they bring borstals back, there will be a series of get-out clauses that will allow middle class kids who get caught nicking cars, pushing drugs or whatever to get probation, suspended sentences etc. while poor kids will do three years for shoplifting a packet of biscuits
