  • what is needed exactly to test for a new belt in jujitsu? are there forms like in taekwondo or karate?

  • What a nice sensei this man is and what a nice class. i love the invironment. so much friendliness and still a very hard class and test. and aggression was strong. i dont know where this dojo is but i strongly recommend this to anybody who wants to practise BJJ. its very hard to find a good teacher, a demanding class along with this freindliness and respect in this class.

  • Hey man, very tight techniques. Thanks for sharing.

  • THIS SUCKS! I want to train with Kieth but I live in the UK :'(

  • @RGTGAME I am 13 years old, and I am a student in Kieth's class :) He is a really good instructor.

  • why do you get choked at the end?

    And how long for?

  • belt testing for bjj?

  • what was he doing at 8:00???

  • How long does it normally take to get to blue belt. Ive been in in jiu jitsu for about a month and I already earned my first stripe ?

  • @Javy765 blue belt is generally about 100 classes. you need to get 5 stripes to get a blue belt. each stripe is 20 classes, so after 5 stripes(100 classes) you can test for a blue belt.

  • this seems very much like japanese jujitsu, is it some kind of combination of JJJ & Bjj???

  • im thinking of starting bjj soon and im really excited,

but also a tille nervous cuz im a big buy and idk if that really fits in with bjj.

i want to learn for exercise and to one day compete

  • Really impressive...

  • Outstanding, hard work ALWAYS PAYS OFF!!! Good job guys.

  • song ,I Will Never Be The Same - World less

  • i dont want this to sound like a stupid question, and i know you see some in the video, but if i take BJJ will i learn take downs? like throwing somebody to the floor? iv seen it with regular JJ. i really love submissions but i also really love takedowns.

  • @evancooper101 yes you do, al bjj fights starts standing up

  • mean guys ! wot is the sound track in the back ground?

  • ari how did you get 4 stripes on your blue belt so fast? u just got it a little more than a year ago?

  • @carlsongracieteam After I tested for by blue (I was a white for a year), Keith put two stripes on my blue after my test (previous experience). You get stripes after 100 classes of training. I average 5 training days a week. In the Pedro Sauer assoc, you get a stripe every 100 classes after blue belt (meaning, it takes 500 classes to go for purple and then 500 more for brown and then 500 more to test for black. White belt is 100 classes total in order to test for blue). Hope that helps.

  • @Submissions101 yup helps a ton didnt know how the pedro sauer assoc. worked forgot keith was a black belt under sauer, i got my blue and 1st stripe on my 16th birthday good luck on your bjj journey.

  • throughout my endeavors of JJ anywhere as well as muay thai I am going to be honest, Ari doesnt roll the best in competition and hes not very fast or strong, but he is an excellent teacher and that is his talent. You cant question someones knowledge or ability to teach because of how he competes. I have had multiple teachers who are world class and cant teach for shit. Whole thing is up in the air I guess, just dont hate on the guy for no reason.

  • @genjibob Agreed, Ari is a good teacher.

  • Thats the way it should be work hard for every belt, thats something i personally dont like about belts in sports. I dont know if its true but if you compare east to west in sports like TKD, (B)JJ, Karate, Judo etc i feel like most people who get a belt in the west isnt all that good, and they get there belt way too easy.

Like Mr Owen says you know you worked your ass off for your belt, so you can be proud of it. How can you be proud off your belt if you havent worked your ass off for it.

  • they both need a lesson in jumping jacks haha

  • @xxtehfavnoobxx agreed...but after 2 hours, you get a wee bit tired!

  • What the hell? Is that choke out a common custom in BJJ belt test?

  • @Svittidiu it was a custom created by Professor Pedro Sauer. He used to do the hip toss as well as a 'welcome to your new belt' tradition.

  • @Svittidiu depends on what acadamy you train under but most commonly you are thrown by your coaches then you have to run the gauntlet (belt whippings) which is not very nice and painful as hell

  • @Svittidiu stupid questions like this are common on youtube?

  • at the school I go to we have a super fight for the blue but I really like how this school does it great video

  • Just curious.. why the chokeout to passout at the end? He said something about checking what they are made of, and that he WANTED them to know when to tap out, and he did. Or was it that he just hung on a bit too long? :-) Just curious, nothing bad to say about it! Keep training!!!

  • Why do you feel that it was necessary to blood choke the second blue belt?

  • 8:09 so if he taps too early he loses his belt?

  • @shockwavecrisis No he wants that guy to learn a lesson...HE HAS TO TAP! He has to simply hold it the longest, but if he doesn't tap before he faints-the belt is back in the Professor's hands.

  • This is one of the more interesting belt videos I have seen.

  • why did he choke him out at the end...?

  • I love this video .

  • those 2 did a great job, congrats.

to answer the question below, it usually takes about a yr to a yr and a half to earn a blue belt based on ur athletic background. belt promotion in bjj is very slow compared to most martial arts. my instructor took 11 yrs to earn his blackbelt, though i suspect he could have done it quicker if not for personal committments.

  • it is said that you never compete...

  • @ipawnurass Just started back actually. My videos are up.

  • this is a great video i just started jiujitsu its not easy

  • wow

  • is the test same for all schools?

  • I will feel VERY confident in my daughters skills when she finally earns her Blue Belt in BJJ. She is 9 right now, and has been training for over a year in BJJ. Only 7 more years to go before that Blue Belt! :)

  • how long does it take to get a black belt in bjj?

  • depends on the school and the instructor. It took Keith Owen 13 years.

  • i practiced different kinds of martial arts before... but this one is the best to fight one opponent...i haven't seen any martial artist that defeats a bjj player not even once...

the only weakness i think it has you can't do ONLY Jujitsu against multiple opponents in other martial arts you can...may be i think this way because i have no advanced knowledge of the game...

    what do you think?

  • @rocketer90 its took BJ Penn 3. i think it can take up to 20 though.

  • @rocketer90 also depends on you..i mean bj penn got his black belt in 3 years

  • @rocketer90 depends on the instructor AND the student, if u go to more tournaments and go to more classes in general, ull get it faster

BJ penn got his in 3 years i think

some ppl take more than 10

i think 10 years is the average

  • that must feel very rewarding. Awesome job guys

  • Congratulations guys. Looks like a great place to learn.

  • so cool

  • This video was pretty inspiring. I also train in Pedro Sauer's BJJ association. I'm in my 8th month of training now, and I've done nearly all of the techniques that were demonstrated in this video.

Now I guess I know what to expect when my instructor decides that I am ready to test for my blue! Probably 6+ more months from now.

  • I completely agree with your statement, StickKeeze. Very inspiring video, indeed. After about a year and a half of training, I finally took my blue belt test a week ago. An extremely difficult testing session, but very rewarding upon completion. When the official seminar for diplomas/belt promotion comes, Ill be happy to have received my blue belt after turning 16 just a few months ago. Best of luck on your journey of BJJ!

  • Awesome!! I love how a BB under Pedro Sauer is making his White Belts learn the basic self defense aspects of GJJ FIRST!! I would expect nothing less w/ such a close line to the GM himself; Helio.

  • shit.. long way to be blue

  • @ukuledoj so rewardin in the end i finally got my purple lol

  • This proves that you have managed to get to a standard blue-belt level now...

I think you'll get to purple in a couple of years with hard work.

I'm very pleased your'e learning the basics properly since a lot of white-belts are watching your videos.

  • You have a lot of peeps on different boards questioning your credibility... They say you never compete, that you bought your Blue belt from Eddie Bravo. I can see you earned this belt and I am no one to question anything your doing. You look pretty good to me...

  • There will always be people questioning everything out there. They want you to fit into their own world view. I didn't purchase my purple belt from Eddie nor did I purchase one from Keith Owen. It is a lot of hard work and I have nothing but respect for 10th Planet, BJJ, JJJ and other art forms. As I have always said "stop wasting your timing being negative and do what makes you happy"

    cheers!

  • well said i would love to roll with you

  • @Submissions101 I could NEVER imagine someone like Eddie Bravo, or ANY respectable instructor, would allow someone to "purchase a belt!" He would NEVER belittle the hard work in his system like that. Your skill and technique is clean and VERY well taught! I ALWAYS enjoy seeing the latest vids!! :-)

  • @Submissions101 If you didn't purchase your belt from Eddie, then what you're saying is an Eddie Bravo purple belt is only as good as a 4 stripe white belt or blue belt at best?

  • @kibakichi281 No, I never said that nor implied it. I realize where you are going with this. Good luck in your training and do what makes you happy.

  • really cool!!

  • I thought Ari was a purple belt under Bravo ? Is this his Gi rank or did he just start over under Keith Owens ?

  • I am a purple under Eddie nogi, blue belt in gi bjj and JJJ black belt...all different...all wonderful!

  • my trainer is also a pedro sauer black belt. nice.

  • Awesome

  • Why did Keith Owen choked Ari by the end.

  • Kinda new to the whole martial arts stuff but im really enjoying watching your movies, there's flow in there :) ( And your teachers too btw, he seems like the kind of man who commands respect just by his appearance )

    Keep em coming :)

  • song info!! anyone??

  • SO proud of you buddy!

  • Does anyone know the name of the sweep at 2:38 that Dan did. I really liked it. Nice one Dan!

  • Mitch:

It is a variation of what Keith Owen calls the Sickle Sweep bro ;-). I am going to put that up in a few hours for ya!

    cheers

    Ari

  • Great Video, and nice work! Congrats on the blue belt guys! I was also wondering what the song is called. It's very motivating

  • see side bar for song info ;-)

  • Damn guy in the blue has stamina, strength, aggression...I feel bad for you Ari he manhandled you...but i know you were tired..

  • That is Tristan, one of my students. We kept cycling though new people and it makes you tired for sure. Tristan has a highlight real on sub 101 too...he's a good kid!

  • Cool! Ari btw random question for you...i wanted to know your views on chi, or qi. Is it real? thanks

  • An honour to watch the personal journey of two dedicated BJJ practitioners. Thank you for sharing.

  • What a great test. Ari and Dan had a LOT to be proud of that day (and of course a lot since that day as well).

  • I was told the more often you are choked, the more susceptible to being choked out in the future. (You will loose conciousness faster and more easily.) And you should tap relativly quickly after having a choke applied on you.

  • Urban myth...not so. Has no basis in medical science. You may however be thinking of getting knocked out...that is a different story.

  • Maybe that's what was ment and I just misunderstood.

  • You guys got beasted, well done and some great movement!!

  • congrats on the blue Ari...good job and great work.

  • wait why did he choke you at the end? Thought that was kind of weird

  • GREAT JOB! CONGRATS! Whats the song to btw?

  • Much respect for picking up the gi, I think it's the best route to take IMO. It'll refine your entire ground game(gi no gi). I know 10th planet has closed it's door to the gi, so i commend you for opening you and your team up to the gi. You might find you love it more than no-gi. PROPS!

  • Aww, no whipping at the end. ;)

I got my blue by surprise, but for the purple I need to take a test too..

  • congrats, very good

  • congrats on ur blue belt!

  • Gratz Ari and Dan!

Tough test and you looked great.

  • damn man into the middle of ur sparring that looked madd brutal bro anyway congrats u are a beast ^_^

by the way did u keep up with ur cardio? ur stamina looks real clean

  • My stamina sucked ;-) I really need to up that big time to be honest. It was a great experience and my respect goes out to all the BJJ players out there!

  • Blah you look good always my friend, I went to Reno and did some stuff. I got asked to goto Israil and Train with the Army and the Police.

  • Hey TY!!!! That's really cool. You going?

  • For sure my friend then working alot with alot of really good guys. Many masters on Self Defense.

  • yea i think we all could use more stamina but urs looked real nice even tho ur facial expression was of *damn wtf* lol but ur a beast bro much respect to u always

    jTm

  • 5/5

when he kneed you, I rooted for you, I said out loud, it's a test suck it up and keep going ;) congrats!

  • Congrats

  • that was really bad ass.

  • awesome test congrats

just wondering if you have seen benefit in your game from training with a gi as opposed to no-gi

i always hear the gi vs no-gi but most of the time its eddie just wondering if with your experience you feel the same way.

    take care

  • this is awesome i just started bjj in the beginning of august and i love it i did shotakan karate for about 2 years and obtained a brown belt but man is this different i cannot wait to move up and constatnly learn. What exactly is the testing that usualy expected with the blue belt?

  • most coaches dont test, you get the belt when you can do well with other blue belts.

  • Good hard test. Well done Boys..

  • Keith's face at 8:29 is hilarious!

  • this is intense jiu jitsu

  • awsum well earnt lads! seeing that makes me know im a long way too getting my blue belt.

  • wow awesome

are those jap tewaza added or do all bjj guys learn them?

  • Sick triangle flow at 1:01

  • This shows you meant what you said when you went to the Gracie academy. You are a great example to the rest of us who often lower ourselves by trying to put down other martial arts or even different variations of the same thing. Thus going against what martial arts are supposed to do,which is to improve the lives of individuals both physically as well as morally.Great Work Brother.

  • thats a cool little ritual at the end when he chokes you. of course seeing it and doing it are two completely different things :)

  • grats ari!

  • Why the teacher made the student "sleep"??? Is it part of the exam?

  • That's amazing. Very impressive level of skill and commitment, especially for an incoming blue belt! Congrats to the gentlemen in the video.

  • you guys looked tired as hell...gj

  • yo why did he have to tapout to earn his blue belt

  • I actually though you were a lot more advanced, Ari. Isn't blue like the first belt to grade in BJJ?

  • Yes, blue is after white in BJJ. I've done some other stuff over the years ;-) (10th Planet purple belt and JJJ black belt) but learning BJJ from the ground up is amazing, just like the other arts I study.

  • im going to taking my blue belt test soon, what are the requirements, my instructor told me something about 32 moves & sweeps, what is that supoesed to mean? what kind of stuff do youi recomend i work on?

  • hard to name em all. ask your instructor for his specific requirements, everyone is different.

  • mine was 5 take downs 5 sweeps

    ten submissions from the guard

ten submissions from the top position

5 submissions when u have there back

    4 leg locks

    and 4 escapes

and a 3 flow submsission from any position

i would do all basic moves that work n a flow

    chokes to arms

  • thanks ari im siked to get my blue belt now lol

  • When is Eddie coming out with the online ranking stuff?

  • very cool ari much respect bro congrats on the blue , i know the work u have to put in to get that.....o and thanks for submissions 101 great stuff always watchin

  • Congrats guys!

  • excellent.. Legit Blue belts under an amazing lineage. CONGRATS! Osu..

  • hey ari how old r you bro and wht r you a blak belt in ?

  • I am 35. I have a blue belt in BJJ, Purple shirt in 10th Planet and Black belt in Japanese Jujutsu.

  • very nice pass at 6:35

  • good job guys!

  • Dude i never could understand the whole thing at the end, what did he say ''if you dont tap i take your belt back''...= ! Glad Dave Camarillo doesnt do that, but he doesnt give belts away, you do earn it he just doesnt do that at the end

  • Keith wasn't being serious. Some schools whip with their belts others have long conversations along the beach. This was just a rite of passage...and well worth it.

  • I think it has something to do with admitting defeat instead of losing your life.

  • He does that I think becuase 3 guys in a row in our school didnt tap and went out...

  • Congrats fellas..

    Good video..

  • Nice.... and congratulations both!!!!!Nice video!!!!Gr,

  • nice work Ari and Dan congratz

  • thank you sir ;-)

  • sorry If I'm alittle delayed in what has happened but do you not do 10th planet system anymore? seems like the same dojo...

  • YES!!!! I am not sure why so many people think one cannot do 10th Planet NOGI jiu Jitsu and BJJ. We do this plus JJJ. We are here to bridge gaps between the styles and arts. We love anything jiu jitsu. Each system offers something amazing and we are proud to be Eddie's students and also Keith's students.

    Hope that helps!

  • Sorry for the mishap. That is great that your trying to bridge the gap to those styles!! Good luck!

  • ahah is instructor Keith one of those guys that requires you to break an arm before getting a black belt :-D

  • Congrats Ari welcome back to Sub 101 bro.

  • Awesome job guys! way to stick it out

    OMODETO GOZAIMASU!

  • congrats now try no GI

  • already do nogi under Eddie Bravo ;-)

  • check the submissions101 channel here on tube a masterpiece of art packed in to outstanding explanation of various technics and submissions by ari and his 10th planet team.;)

  • Keith seems like a great instructor and a all around good guy. Thanks for adding his teachings guys and congrats.

  • dude, great stuff, but I could hardly pay attention with that AWESOME song in the background... are you really friends with a guy in thsi band? talent!

  • So you've been teaching people as a whitebelt this whole time? I don't think that's very wise as your technique probably isn't very refined.

  • Our background is varied (purple belt under Eddie and Japanese JJ black belts) . We decide to do this to make our gi work more crisp. It is always nice to have options.

  • if u check the techniqes u can see for urself hes explaining it very good and they all work i try them in class one by one.i dont think uit matters what belt u have if u really know what ur talking about.but nits a reasonable question beacause many people teach and dont really have a clue what theyre talking about.and then the student get used to the wrong techniqes.

  • Wow what a work out, I thought Judo was rough.

This is really a great way to display what u know and apply it. Great Job.

  • hey do u guys use ronin gis?

  • hey Ari, how long did the test actually take?

  • From start to pass out finish, it was 1 hour 40 mins.

  • Wow... in Tae Kwon Do it took only about 30-40 minutes.

  • nice test

  • wow that testing is pretty crazy lol remembering to do all that

  • haha "suck it up". Looks like an exhausting test. Good work!

  • I have a question. Normally martials arts such as tae kwon do, and karate have what you call figures such as chon gi, and such. Does bjj do this as well?

  • Great job guys!!!!

  • wtf, the choke was part of the test?!

  • Thats what I was wondering to xD

But yeah congrats Ari. Seemed tough :D

  • Oh and great job Dan and Ari you deserve the blue

  • lol Keith Owen is the man I gotta train with him some day

  • liked this video a lot, rolling after working out is tough but thats fairly standard, as or more difficult then rolling 5-10 guys in a row and having to get the tap

  • Gratz

  • Great job Ari and Dan! Congratulations! It's a privilege to have a top-notch teacher like Mr. Keith Owen. Hope to see you down at his school in the future!

  • You know, I can't help but smirk when I see these guys roll and then do burpees. They looked exhausted. It reminded me when I got my white-blue belt. We had to jump rope (3 min.), burpee w 3 pushups (3 min.), Sprawl (3 min.), Single-Leg Defense (until the instructor felt like stopping), Squats (3 min...) after that I was delirious..there were other things we did but I can't remember. Congrats to those guys for the hard work!!!!

  • why the choke out ?? ???

  • great test,LOVE the song keep doing it man, you guys in my opinion are the best jujitsu school

  • maybe i should get tested for my blue belt somewhere, I think I am pretty familiar with everything I saw in the vid. The instructor was awesome I would love to train with that guy! He seems like he has a natural talent for teaching, something missing from many instructors regardless of discipline.

  • There are a total of 88 techniques (only a handful were shown) for blue belt.

  • Great vid...I plan on taking BJJ classes soon :) BTW the music...sounds like Celldweller..what song is that??

  • Does Dan have prior grappling experience? Just wondering how he is tapping Ari when Ari has a black belt in JJJ and purple under Eddie? Must be fatigue

Congrats to both of you guys, good job.
