I couldn't figure out if the music was an adam sandler spoof or a bunch of skiers that should stick to skiing. Nah, really though, good on ya for trying. Don't stop livin' the dream!
Don't know that he was a Patroller. Buddy of mine I ski with up there worked up there for years was on the search party. Topher, as I understand, was a ski bum up there most of the week and everyone in patrol and ski school knew him as if her were a patroller or instructor, had come up with friends and was skiing off my himself when his friends left thinking he must have hitched a ride down earlier in the day (apparently something he did regularly). Reported missing a couple days later and...
...everyone in patrol and ski school who was around joined the search (call came in after hours so everyone was changing out of gear but didn't hesitate to put everything back on and head out). They went to the trees now known as Topher's Trees because he was known by everyone to ski there frequently. White-out blizzard conditions, near midnight, snowcat lights from the cat track at the bottom still unable to light the area sufficiently, they had to call off the search...
@echo4charlieUSMC ...patrol found him the next morning about 10-15 feet from where the search was called off. The tree is right on the edge of the drop (part of the reason they had to stop the search was the lack of visibility and safety of being too near the edge). At least, that was the story I was told- could be wrong.
Incidentally, the trees in the area are so devastated by pine beetle, but they have kept the lower 50' of the trunk of that tree standing.
@phil656565 Yeah Christopher Sendroy, died in a tree well. The tree is still marked with his crossed Head skis, it's just above the tree with his memorial plaque.
Topher is short for Christopher who was a patroller and while checking it for dangers so that we the public could enjoy it. Yes he died there....I'm sure he's happy it's still just as sick as ever..always Go big ,live it and ride it like it might be your last.
@tfcruz toph.not a patroller....... I had the sign made... we had a sweet ski race for him the next year.. GS.. to SL to bumps.. all in one run. middle time got the big prize.. air line tickets...
Take the Round House trail. After Trestle splits off, start looking on the left side. Unless it just snowed, you'll see some tracks going into the trees. You want as much speed as possible to shorten the hike. After you run out of steam, take off your skis and hike to the top. You'll see the sign there. There's a hut built into the cliff just below the top and some good spots to jump off. You'll end up on Corona.
The story we heard is a guy named Topher died in there.
