thanks for id'ing the dobro player. He smokes!!!!!!! I watch this alot. They are such a good bunch. Happy Happy Joy Joy. It never fails to put my head back in order. Yeah aren't the pens in Tony's pocket wicked awesome devil may care dorkville. He's so cool with his hard poses and the singing out of the side of his mouth as he communicates with the fellers with his nods.
Absolutely amazing! I haven't just discovered these guys, I listened to them in New Grass Revival, at least Tony and Sam. I have to say that as far as I'm concerned, they are the standard to which other players must be judged. I've listened to many pickers, and there are none which compare. Too bad Bela isn't in this one. You can listen to this and have cold chills roll all over you.
Ahh man, he's not on drugs. He's in 'the zone'. It's a magical place where musicians go when everything sparks and fires just right. Getting back to that place- as often as possible- is what keeps us playing.
ain't gonna find a better assembly of pickers or a better rendition of this song no matter where or how hard you look. They were all *on fire* that day.
im from new jersey and think this is awesome.. i feel like i running from the cops or something when listening to these fast paced songs.. haha i dont know...

I personaly don't play to satisfy others. I play for me. It does help if others are in to it. But, it isn't completely necesary. Those guys are great. Is that Mark O'conner?
There is no denying these musos are terrific and together they sound fantastic but there is another version that you all may like, type nine pound hammer Tommy Emmanuel to the search engine above and have a look.
To read my comments properly: scroll down to the first one; it starts: "I've been learning Bluegrass few a good few years now"... and uh... yes it really does say "few a good few years" haha but thats just a 'typo' oops.
First I thought I could be like Clapton, then Hedrix, Then Satriani, Then when I couldn't find a band I leart to sing and I REALLY thought I could be like Tony...
...but no-one can. I've learnt that it's much better to be a 1st rate version of yourself than a 2nd rate version of someone else
To put it bluntly:
I'VE HAD SOME REALLY HORRIBLE, PAINFULLY 'hard times' BUT DESPITE THAT I'M THE ABSOLUTE BEST 'luke day style' GUITARIST IN THE WORLD!!!!
I like Tony Rice, Sam Bush, Jimmy Gaudreau, Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss, The Bothy Band, The Incredible String Band, The Beatles, The Kinks and of course my lovely band who I love I do play some modern stuff at the pubs and clubs out of necessity. My favourite thing of all is writing... I realised that my audiences don't know ALL the music I play, so I started playing my own stuff... Thats how I discovered that music was a very deep, real thing that I can have as my own to love and enjoy.x
...So I now see the notes from root to 2, from 2 to minor 3 to major 3, from 3 to 4, from the 4th to the augmented 4th or diminished 5th, then to the 5th to 6th etc right through... But along this "Bluegrass Journey" towards the "grand awakening" that Tony's achieved, one must always remember or never forget to make "music" not "science".
I have no YouTube videos (haven't even got a camera), but I play my local areas as a professional. When I play a Tony Rice song I always tell the audience.
I've been learning Bluegrass few a good few years now but never really said anything about it... Well, here goes:
As a Celtic-Welsh person living in the UK and playing Irish Fiddle,
Bluegrass caught my attention for a number of reasons, needless to say, and I've noticed some of the fundamentals... The starts, The finishes, The Plectrum, The Down/Up picking, The minor3 major3 thingy. BUT THEN...
Tony Rice came along and opened it up... like a book... you can't read it all on the first page
hot DAMN! Makes me wan' go git ma 30-06 and hunt me some wild Hog for a mighty big stew... Might book this outfit for when I marry my sister! JK guys - this is f@#king awesome! If I die being able to play half as good as Tony Rice I'll die a happy man.
@brodank That's not Tony, It's a stagehand. You can clearly hear the guitar still being played while Flux's mic is being fixed. Also, you can see that the person fixing the mic is using his left hand. On Tony's left hand are rings and he's also wearing his Accutron.
Correct observation on the Accutron and rings. However the mike adjustment was made by Mark Shatz, who was doubling as road manager for the Unit during this time period.
@brodank Actually, upon further review, it's Mark Schatz! You can see him spin the bass around and lean over. Luckily his root and fifth are open strings, leaving him able to fix the mic! how bout that?
Please tell me that isn't Jerry Douglas on the dobro... I know he looked like a serial killer way back in the day, but I refuse to believe that's him...
Mark O connor is the consummate Professional ...... these guys are QUALITY MUSICIANS!! and as far as I myself and thousands of other Bluegrass ENTHUSIAST are concerned they are LEGENDS PURE AND SIMPLE!! COUNTRY ROCKS BUT BLUEGRASS RULES!
It's been a "hard" 58 years, I'm afraid. Brothers Larry (RIP) & Wyatt were/are quite the same. These boys light both ends of the canndle, and then try & light it in the middle (well, Tony's calmed down & Larry's calmed PLUMB down). It seems to be a family tradition, pardon the pun. He could still pick though - couldn't he?
Fantastic. Thank you to all the fans of Blue Grass who keep this music available to all music lovers.
I am not knowledgeable about this music but I can identify brilliant musicianship when I see it and all you fans can be proud of Tony Rice. I just loved it, what a genius he is.
And my comments come from 43 years of bluegrass guitar & bass playing, and 39 years of bluegrass banjo playing. I've had the pleasure of playing with Mark as well as knowing him for more years than either of us care to count, and to assert that he plays without soul is truly incredible. I can count on the fingers of both hands the fiddlers in his class, and I don't think a single one of them would buy that either.
Now the SOUND MAN - HE should be shot AND hung at sunrise . . . .
@OhBeeg1BanjoV: completely agree about Mark. He's a treasure and a jaw-dropping musician and composer, and the idea that he does not have passion or soul flies in the face of what he's done his entire life as a musician and mentor to younger musicians.
@ebennett7 you got that right, I'm just a poor boy from Canada and these guys can kick MAJOR ass. Those negative guys would wish they could come even a little bit close to what these giant fellows could do
Methinks if that were the case Mr. Rice wouldn't jam with him, he may hear something you don't. I also have never seen Mark fired up over anything in a video. I don't think he's passionless, in fact he my have to MUCH passion. I mean I think he's more interested in his playing, and playing with the band, than PLEASING THE CROWD. I think that's why a lot of people don't like him, they pick up on that. I think as long as they are playing he could give a shit if anyone's else is there or not. My 2.
@bloodmoonblooz Yeah, I think you hit on a widely known but rarely mentioned truth about (more than a few) musicians. And particularly jazz musicians. They play for themselves and for their peers and, hey, if we HAPPEN to like it, well, that's cool, but not necessary. There are thousands of very talented musicians who could be making good money playing pop or rock but they'd rather drive a cab and play their obscure stuff that nobody but them and a few other folks really like. C'est la vie.
@rumney84 yeah, to most girls its all about who the hottest singer is. nothing based on artistic talent. just whatever's going on in the pop industry. alot of girls make fun of me. they say that I listen to "weird hillbilly music performed by ugly old men." But I don't listen to it to LOOK at them. I listen to it because, like my parents, I love the sound of that flatpicking.
The "guy" on the dobro is Jerry Douglas and he plays on almost every bluegrass or country cd that comes out that needs the best dobro player on the planet. He has played with the best and they are better for having appeared with him. Google his name and look at what comes up.
I'm sorry but what's up with the pens in TR's pocket around :50? Does he just have to sign so many autographs that he has to keep a couple sharpies handy even on stage?
I 2nd all what HughGene says, when a guitar solo comes up and its Tony you know its Tony, with out seeing and you also know when a guitar takes a break its somebody trying to pick Tonys stuff. he's to the guitar that what Earl is to the banjo..
Tony Rice cannot be compared to ANYBODY. There are pickers faster, sometimes flashier, but nobody better. His musical taste, phrasing, sense of space and impeccable timing put him above every other bluegrass guitarist alive today...and he invented his unique style, although he obviously had/has his influences...we all do. The only player close to him is his brother Wyatt, at least as far as right hand techinque, but Tony's musicality remains unique.
thanks for id'ing the dobro player. He smokes!!!!!!! I watch this alot. They are such a good bunch. Happy Happy Joy Joy. It never fails to put my head back in order. Yeah aren't the pens in Tony's pocket wicked awesome devil may care dorkville. spicman2020 2 years ago 2

They always match his tie. Hilarious. TR rules.

Norman Blake also does a nice job with this song. But Tony's vocals takes it to another level. Great song well sung.

I 2nd all what HughGene says, when a guitar solo comes up and its Tony you know its Tony, with out seeing and you also know when a guitar takes a break its somebody trying to pick Tonys stuff. he's to the guitar that what Earl is to the banjo..
Dpkll5 2 years ago
To me, this is what bluegrass is all about.
Tony is at his best, flux is fluxing, and Marc gets a hold of a good one there, on that second break . . .

Miss his gorgeous voice though.

So True, Gene
Tony was/is the flatpicking messiah - took it out of the dark ages and set the bar. He stood on the shoulder of giants and set the BAR.
Great comment!
