We all 'get it' that the concept of the 'Magic Negro' well predates Barack Obama and the Shanklin parody, but the reason that Rush Limbaugh and other conservatives practically tripped over themselves to use the term is because they were pandering to a racist Republican base. They weren't using the term in order to foster critical thinking about the role of black characters in popular media, they were using it to slur Obama.
