  • awful ADR quality

  • Big, beefy, brown-eyed, brainy...... beautiful.

  • Guy's the epitome of nonchalance

  • masterpiece

  • "What do I need a cat for? I got a girl!"

Best line in the movie, right there.

  • Spike is alive! That space cowboy never dies.

  • @waltherppk1000 You must be insane. Gould is a fucking beast of a man in this film.

  • pussy's pussy

  • "Mister, all this shit is the same." The central line in the movie!

  • @BobBerkeley Yeah, a good case can be made for that.

  • He's got a girl and I got a cat

  • 21 cents for macaroni?! Ya got any cases o' this stuff in the back? Yeah, I'll take all ya got!

  • The cat is a good actor ;-)

  • John William's most brilliant score, very witty with the change of music for the same theme, e.g., turns into muzak at the supermarket.

  • @fitzochris : I made the mistake of reading the book before seeing this......

  • El Porto Del Gato :D haha

    Just read the book ^^

  • This movie was ahead of its time. Or, a challenge to its time. When it came out, Humphrey Bogart as Philip Marlowe was a GOD and Elliot Gould's take on the character was viewed as an affront to that.

  • god i love him in this movie just a joy to watch, what a fantastic unique original character, could have only been played by Elliot Gould

  • in response to Ahimas - the soundtrack is very hard to get hold of - you have tobuy it as 1/2 of an album - shared with the movie 'Fitzwill'y'. Even this album is very hard to get hold of but it has the 7 versions of the theme in full.

  • @billhargreaves123 Hey.. thank you :) It took me a whole year to notice that someone gave a really helpfull respond to my comment!.. Well, better a year later then never..^^

  • @Ahimas Welcome. I think that I actually got mine from a shop in Germany via the web!

    Billy

  • it's OK with me

  • Some knows who is singing at 4:56 (female voice)? And whether there is a full version of that song sang by this voice?

  • Does he ever feed his cat? Or, does the cat ever get fed?

  • no. the cat leaves the house and never comes back. altman claims it's a metaphor for the whole movie. i don't see how, but the movie is fucking brilliant.

  • Marlowe is so loyal to the cat and in return he is abandoned. Just like everyone else.

  • The cat only stayed around as long as Marlowe was useful, once he realised that he could no longer use him, he just abandoned him.

  • No. The cat and Marlowe were the only 2 characters who wouldn't tolerate being lied to.

  • No, there are only 2 characters in the movie, who can't accept lies: the cat and Marlowe.

  • "It's OK with me"

  • a guy from the fifties stuck ni the 70's

  • What a performance from Elliot Gould.

  • Hahaha...cats ain't stupid...

  • No one lies to the cat!

  • ok, ok, Curry's Brand Catfood... hhahaha.. A REAL MASTERPIECE.

and Elliott Gould's monologue here is pure music, it sounds just like a bass jazz solo. Sometimes instead of an album I just play out loud the beginning of this movie.

    BEST TITLE SEQUENCE EVER

  • Cool--Marlowe lives next door to Stevie Nicks!

  • Presently reading Chandler's "The Long Goodbye" in fact, what a classic it is!

Chandler is one of the greatest American writers ever - and there's plenty of good ones.

Greetings to fans of Chandler and Marlowe everywhere from Gothenburg, Sweden!

  • Chandler was originally British, actually.

  • @jblacktree Wrong. Very wrong.

  • Raymomd Chandler was Bristish. He moved to the US and began writing detective stories--of which The Long Goodbye was not his best, though it was made into some great films.

  • @jblacktree He was born in Chicago, dude.

  • And moved to England at 8 months, dude, where he lived for all his formative years--and if you ever heard him talk, he had a Brit accent. He was a naturalized English citizen. Bob Hope was born in England but raised in the USA and as American as Coca Cola. Chandler was English--read his biography--it's why his prose is so peculiar and un-Hammet-like.

  • I read in an old interview that Altman himself was very proud of this first scene that held the attention of the viewer as long as it did with out any real action.

As for me, I could just watch Elliott Gould 24/7.

  • it's insane how much i LOVE elliot gould. he's a god. i can't believe streisand could cheat on HIM when they were married! everything he's done has been brilliant. i've been in love ever since i saw him take his jar of olives out in M*A*S*H. God, love him!

  • The F***ING BEST!Such a good film, and a great performance by nearly everyone-and a true testament to Altman's direction. The few people I met in life who adore this film nearly as much as I do have all become wonderfully sensitive, beautiful people.

And that's not even my point with this comment; my point is that this is such great art...an odd, strange, beautiful film.... You miss a lot in life if you can't see the beauty in this film...

And then, how did they get the cat to act so well??!!

  • cats are naturally like that. mine's climbed onto the wardrobe and cannonballed my boyfriend's chest to get food. it wasn't acting!

incidentally, all cats do what Marlowe's does - they can tell a mile off if the food isn't right. i love how he puts it into the other can, trying to fool it! cat owners alll get to that stage of what seems to them like normality but is extreme madness. i can totally identify. especially with the 3/4am cat-food-runs!

  • I agree about the film, it's a masterpiece!

  • is this a comidy or not i have never seen it

  • Wasn't the cat nominated for an Oscar?

  • Where is your hat, Marlowe?

  • Gould is a great actor.

He was brilliant in Capricorn One as well, does anyone remember that movie?

  • Yes brilliant film and too close to the truth for comfort.

"Marlow you wearing a tie? Not that stupid way of buttoning your shirt and no tie?."... Dead men dont wear......

  • thats a reply to the comment about "capricorn one"

  • It's amazing how Marlowe can light a match against any kind of surface. :)

  • matches were different then.

  • i love a man who smokes, i know it's very non-PC but i do. my man (who's been cannonballed by our cat) smokes liek Marlowe - about a million a day and I love it.

lots of things are better with a man who smokes...

  • Bit of trivia: Gould lights a cigarette in every scene of the film

  • great flick, love song playing all different ways throughout movie

  • Great to see this movie. Is there another One with Elliot Gould as marlowe?

  • No, sadly this is the only one... They really should have made a sequel!

  • Please please upload the whole movie! I can't find it anywhere.

  • oh man, finally someone put this movie on, word up! the opening sequence is brilliant

  • I thought this movie was a good, albeit quirky, attempt to transplant Chandler's knight errant into the adrift '70s.

  • All this SHEEIIT is the same anyway..lol.

  • Not much to do with Chandler's novel, but that's Altman for you.
