I would think one important clue in identifying any of the 10 lost tribes would also be the form of worship they follow, or don't follow. The Assyrians carried the Northern kingdom off before the Rabbinical traditions (which developed after Judah returned from Babylon). Even before the Assyrians, the 10 northern tribes were not very devout. Any peoples claiming to be decendants of the 12 tribes would be practicing an early form of religion - if at al! Some of the 10 may not know who they are.
