  • I think you'll love the story. The idea of the bobble/bauble and how it's incorporated into the tale, both as a physical phenomenon and a political lever, is wonderful. In a way it's a pity you read "Marooned..." first, as the slow reveal of the true nature of the bobbles has already been revealed to you. Still a great adventure though.

  • Can't agree more. I read this as part of the twin-volume "Across Realtime", where it follows "The Peace War". His storytelling is so enjoyable, you feel you're almost involved in the action.

  • Thanks - I finally got my hands on a copy of The Peace War, so I'm really looking forward to reading it - when I read Marooned, I didn't realize it was the second volume of a series at first - it's a very well separated story.

  • Brilliant Stuff,my man!

  • Thanks - I appreciate the comment!

  • No, I have not read Peacer Wars yet. I can't find it in any of the book retailers. I have read A Fire Upon the Deep, and it's sequel, as well as the more recent Rainbows End.

  • ...If you want to see what the next big step in personal computing/web surfing will be, read Rainbows End. Wearable computers, video glasses, constant access to the web, virtual reality overlays to change the appearance of our world...and even contact lens displays. Recently, there was an article about a prototype for contact lens displays, so I think he is on to something.

  • Ha! I just watched it again. I had a bit of a cold that day... sniff... you can't hide anything from the camera, can you? Sniff...

  • Yes, this is a great book. Enjoyable as just a Sci-Fi story, but even more important as an early example of forward thinking on the subject of the human singularity.

  • I had read about Vinge and the singularity before, maybe through Colin Wilson...? But when I picked up the book i didn't immediately recall the theory - so when i read the book, i was thoroughly engrossed in the storytelling, and wasn't expecting the philosophical payoff that came later. I've got the Peacer War on my list of books to-read, also. Have you read it? Is it as good?

  • It is as good. :)

  • Thanks! I still haven't gotten Peace War yet, but i did read his eariler "True Names," which was great.
