She actually outlived this song for a good 33 years. Where are you getting your numbers from?
"Ne me quitte pas" ("Don't Leave Me") is a song written and sung in French and in Dutch (as "Laat me niet alleen") by the Belgian chansonnier (singer-songwriter) Jacques Brel in 1959.
Marlene Dietrich (German pronunciation: [maɐˈleːnə ˈdiːtʁɪç]; 27 December 1901 – 6 May 1992)[1] was a German-American actress and singer.
Oh mein gott! This is absolutely heartbreaking........and there was me thinking that none could touch Jacques Brel's original but this has me in tears.
I don't care much for German, as a language of love. But this brings tears to my eyes. Her singing voice may not be great, but the sentiment, the emotion... Bravo Marlene!
@Kootje792 Its probably because the original is French:-) And (being German myself) admittedly so much better than the godly Marlene! Try the original by Jacques Brel or Nina Simone's version thereof. Or if you are english, try Dusty Springfield's version!
I think Hana Hegerová performs this song much better (search for Hana Hegerová - Lásko prokletá). She is renowned Czech singer and many people here love her interpretation not only of famous chansons...
@CrystalClear1980 Its almost as if the Czech language wasnt meant for the song....nice version though. truth be told, Im still down with the Brel version the best - this being a close second.
I didn't had any idea she sung that ! It's an absolutely Wonderful interpreation, I started with having goosebumps and finished with tears. Thanks so much for sharing !
Nice version, but please listen to the version of Mari Trini "Ne me quitte pas", according to said Jacques Brel, was the best feminine version of this song.
Why, ever! I have always known she was great but to do justice to a French song! She is wundershön! Super. So powerful, I should have known it! I do not like German language for singing ( talking yes) but this is just perfect. I speak no German But I found myself trying to sing it with her! Also I do not know how close the translation is, can someone tell me please?! Is the translation good like that of the Italian? As the English is a poetic re-interpretation not a translation.
Muy interesante, me gusta el aleman, (los que no se creen superiores), también el idioma, si hubiera alguien que pudiera mandarla o subirla al you tube en alemán, se que muchos le agradecerían. Thanks, if there are somebody that send the letter in germany? I know that many people be great.
Amazing! Heartbreaking, achingly beautiful. I am in tears . . .

@azteca1951 one more detail: the credits for the German lyrics are *hers* :-) she made it.

@azteca1951 her version is the first in German, and is from 1963, says Wikipedia.

sorry, she is really really good, but this song sounds awfull in german, the language is just too harsh for it. And Nina Simone did not impresse me.
The best performence for me is done by Mireille Mathieu.
