I have no idea how time and time again they pull-off effective covers of bands which just aren't meant to be covered (cf The Smiths, Joy Division, Can)
I don't get all the hate over this version, I think it's better than the original actually, but I didn't like Malcom Moony's voice anyhow... I prefer later can... lets see how much unwarranted flames this gathers, oh no, I don't have the same opinion as everyone else.
@kristina80ification its not better its just different, and CAN has had a huge influence on Radiohead sound; especially the Malcom Mooney CAN sound...is really astonishing how much Malcom Mooney's sound has impacted music.
I have no idea how people don't like this verson more. The CAN verson sounds like some guy with a cold singing. But with this, you have Thom Yorke, God himself singing. His voice is clear, smooth and doesn't make you want to kill yourself.
@Kingma1997 The CAN version is him conveying the pain and the voice of simple thief hanging on a cross, abandoned by God, who asks his son "Why must I be the thief??". It's about the brutality of compassion and the worth, sorrow and desperation of a simple thief who never had a break, and in the end gets no break from Jesus himself nor the Romans. He dies alone.
Malcolm Mooney wrote it as a semi-autobiographical piece and it's a 100% real as he was having a mental breakdown at the time.
@interista7878 Luke 23:39-43. "39] One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
[40] But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? [41] We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
@Kingma1997 you fucking idiot. can is awesome. everyone has their own voice and sound when singing. can's singer;s performance is beautiful too. who the fuck needs to have a "clear" and "smooth" voice to be considered good?? SO many great singers have rough voices you narrow minded little dickass.
@Kingma1997 never mind them. you listen to me, and you listen close. the singer sounds like that because he's singing from his soul. not his ego or what he's supposed to sound like by other people's standards. think about that. thom yorke is singing from the same place. an internal place. not what all these pontificating fucks on youtube want to hear.
I think Yorke's voice is a great match for the song, and his upper register is great. Mooney could actually sing in a conventional way (see She Brings the Rain), but whatever he was doing, he did it best in his lower register.
On the one hand, this is a pretty straight up cover, but on the other hand, it's a testament to Can's influence on Radiohead that they could play it like that and it would pass for a Radiohead song.
Btw way I own Kid A and Ok Computer xD Both Can and Radiohead are amazing. Can being way harder than Radiohead to "get into". But The Can is really good when you get what they are good for! =]
The difference between Radiohead's cover and Can's original is that Thom Yorke can actually hold some semblance of a tune and the original singer could barely sing at all. This is going to piss off alot of Can fans, but when I heard the original it was almost comical, the singing actually made me laugh.
@knockknock909 I like Damo Suzuki's voice alot also because he doesn't choose to sing like anyone else. Listen to Vitamin C and Moonshake by Can (some good singing and drumming). Can's Drummer Jaki Liebezeit is one of the best drummers of all time! Unfortunate Can is an acquired taste.
@Anirml, Well theirs acquired tastes and there's objectively bad singing. Radiohead itself is an acquired taster for many but like them or not, people have to atleast admit Thom Yorke is a good singer. It was like someone with a sore throat and who was sick day of recording deciding to do it. I never said anything about the drummer.
@knockknock909 Damo sing Thief in his own great and very emotional way! Can's music have another purpose than Radiodiohead's music. Also there is not much Objectively bad singing, even screaming can be good singing. Check out Art Bears song Freedom. Dagmar's singing is perfect for that song but most people don't see the beauty of it (the genre is RIO/Avant Prog).
@knockknock909 Many people know very little about music, they say they know that a certain piece of music sucks but after having listened to more music they may find that they now understand and like it! I also enjoy music like King Crimson's song Lark's Tongues in Aspic Part 1 (It's not just random noise it's groovy and dark =D). I'm very happy Radiohead did a cover of a Can song! Can made Indie rock in 1968 xD and hip hop in 1973/74 with their song Vitamin C. No Can no Radiohead
@Klowpapier "who is beggaring" through Yorke phonetic, but if you hear the original you will notice that Malcolm Mooney voice it's even more difficult to understand xD
@Gimp1994 he is out of tune non? certainly at the beginning...any musical experts out there who can verify this? btw i mean properly out of tune, not deliberately discordant
I heard The Thief the first time ever today, it was in the ending credits of 'Steal This Movie Part I'. It was the original Can version. The song was beautiful in the movie, perfection.
did anyone ever see the video someone made featuring scenes of different b&w movies for this song? what happened to that video?? i really enjoyed seeing it and never got the chance to download it.. :,o(
Nice to hear the 'musical background' of Radiohead, and to bring forth Can's awesomeness to a degenerated tobogganed generation; but this cover is rather shittey and ingorant in terms of transpose atmosphere, than anything else ..
@RH98 I know what you mean but Youtube comments section isn't a microcosm of society - generally speaking only the most opinionated and/or idiotic leave comments on videos (I regard myself as both btw ;) ) so don't forget all those that wisely say nothing. Great song, I love the original and I love this, fair play to Radiohead for acknowledging one of their influences - Can - and doing what for my money is an excellent cover. There there will inevitably be those that disagree with me...
people here who spend their time worrying about this inane competition, "so and so did it SOO much better," should consider what the actual artists would think of you acting in such a childish way
Usually bands will cover a song live as a tribute to a band that inspired them, so I don't understand the Radiohead hate. It's not like they re-recorded it and released it as a single.
Again I say - COMPARISONS ARE ODIOUS. Without trivialising people's opinions, different artists are going to put themselves into a cover. It's impossible to avoid.. and if we want something just like the original, well, we can just listen to the original and ignore any covers. Personally, I find Thom's vocal on this track quite emotive, but it obviously isn't doing anything for some who are passionate about the original.
without this version, generations would never hear the original. i was born in 81 and never wouldve thought to read up on a german band from the 60's. so whether you prefer the original or not, this version is still highly relevant.
I think the problem with the way Yorke is singing this is that he is sort of warbling the lyrics, while Mooney's vocals on the original were raw, cracked and convincingly anguished, giving the song its power. Similarly, the band descends into a neo-psychedelic, swirly mush, while every note was clear as water in Can's original.
ya it was Can,...considering they have a recording of this song and theyre from the 70s....idk unless of course Coldplay was around in the 70s? maybe?? I dk but something tells me they weren't
Why does it always come down to "this version is better" bullshit. It's a COVER. And they did a good job. Im sure they wern't like " oh let's try and play it better than the guitarists in Can"
That was a cool comment, mochacoffee, not for telling me that i suck, but for the fact that no one can rate this comment without insulting themselves or Radiohead.
Ad hominem doesn't make for a very good argument, maybe you should give us some actual reasons why you think this is bad, rather then throwing a bunch of immature shit at it.
Yes it is . . . since you said it makes its you vomit. I agree that the Can version is better, but this is a tribute. I'm sure Can is happy to know that a band has covered them at all, that would be such an honor, especially by a highly respected band like radiohead. Either way, you haven't made any actual arguments yet. You've just been using ad hominem, and criticizing people who disagree respectfully and non-respectfully.
It isn't adhominem. why is saying 'it makes me vomit' attacking the person?
Unless you think that the 'attacking the person' is implied. I.e. You think by saying that the music makes him vomit, you can assume that he also thinks that the artist makes him vomit?
Alright, ad hominem isn't the right word, but its not meaningful criticism, it has no merit, your not actually saying anything other then "I don't like it." I'm fine with you saying that you don't like it, but have some respect for the people who do.
for those who haven't heard it, Radiohead's Go Slowly ("Can Stylee") is a beautiful nod to Can (this very song) as well as an amazing song in its own right..look it up
Radiohead does covers as a tribute to bands they like. Nobody in the band says that they play these songs better than the original so I don't see where these arguments are coming from.
ok this is pretty sick, and i mean common dude its fucking radiohead covering FUCKING CAN!!!!!!!!! but... i'm not gonna lie the original has sooo much more feeling man,i mean i'm not one to always side with the original, i like a lot of covers more then the originals, but CAN'S VERSION MAKES MY HAIR STAND ON END
41/2 stars i say, just becuase the overlaping/looping kinda makes it lose something, (i think)

Ad hominem doesn't make for a very good argument, maybe you should give us some actual reasons why you think this is bad, rather then throwing a bunch of immature shit at it.
TheDoubtingThomas 2 years ago 3
That isn't ad hominem.
And if it was... If you are attacking art, you are attacking the person no matter what you say - as art is the emotion of the artist.

Yes it is . . . since you said it makes its you vomit.

Radiohead does covers as a tribute to bands they like. Nobody in the band says that they play these songs better than the original so I don't see where these arguments are coming from.
