@mamaloa99 The buttons are just modern dewhurst buttons. They would have originally have been 1970s dewhurst buttons the same as the floor indicator above the doors.
These lifts are not very nice.... In fact the whole entrance area to Tesco's Chatham and the car park stairs stink of urine.. This is the worst car park in Medway and has been since it opened around 1997 or 98.. It's always been used as a toilet...
This Tesco's used to be one of the best stores when it opened but it's really run down now with a leaky roof and buckets all around the store on wet rainy days.
this last one requeres a badly modernisation! and they schould either take that one out of service instead of these nice otis elevators as i love these blau buttons instead ofthat whole working crappy system. i wouldend even enter.
These lifts are an absolute nightmare! I used to work for this very tescos, and the trouble was the local council owns the car park and it's an on going battle to who owns the lifts (even though tescos currently maintains them) and there was going to be a contract in 2009 for the lifts to be refurbished but it never went ahead, also there's a key which can take you only to lv 6 but you had to wedge the doors open, because the button to call the lift doesn't work otherwise you'd be stuck up ther
Yeah, kind of like this, but the lobby here is in worse condition. Strange thing about the ex-sainbury's lifts - there were no stairs in the lift lobby. If you want to use the lifts, you had to go back into the car park, then down a seperate stairwell.
The new Sainsbury's is open in a few months - probably loads of lifts, but personally, I don't find the newer type that interesting.
This Chatham place looks great - i'll have a look to see where it is on google earth and try and visit.
So in this Sainsburys car park, did the lifts go directly into the Sainsburys or outside? Am a bit confused about your response. Are you saying that you had to use the stairs to access the lifts or could you get to the lifts from all car park levels?
The multi-storey car park used to have the lifts at one end, with a couple of stairwells on eitherside. Then Sainsbury's came along - they built a lift block on the other end of the building, but no stairs. The lifts went directly into the Sainsbury's building. If you wanted to use stairs, you had to go out into the car park and down the side stairwell which then went outside.
Search for 'dovecot road, high wycombe' on google earth (continued...)
(contin...). The sainsbury's lift block WAS (now knocked down of course) at the north end, but it's still shown here on google earth (aug09).
At the south end, you can see the spiral vehicle exit - there are lifts down here also - these used to be wicked, single speed with loud motor (long gone though!), this end has also been rebuilt.
There is a photo called "towards west wycombe" - this is where the stairwell is.
There are some of my photos uploaded onto google earth here also!
Thanks for explaining. Do you know when this happened?
Out of interest, are there actually stairs in this car park? I thought they only went between the ground and first floor with the ramp going the rest of the way.
inside the lift the buttons look like one of the thysten krupp lifts i have seen

So what are you trying to say? Chatham lifts are somehow better than other lifts?

Love that ground floor lift lobby! For me, this would be the perfect invitation to explore some old and unloved lifts - it just has that look!
"Store level and exit, store level and exit, store level and exit" - I love it when things go wrong with older lifts!!
Thanks for those stories, facinating!

I remember being really fascinated by these lifts when I first saw them.
Was this car park like the one at Sainsburys High Wycombe

Thanks for taking the time to upload this.
I've never been in them before but have always been interested to see what they are like from the inside.
Out of interest, are the top levels of the car park still open? If so do you have to reach them by the stairs or that ramp?
Meanmanmartin2007 2 years ago
all of the ways beyond level 4 (car ramps, stairs ramp and lifts) have all been blocked off.

@benobve where can you get the key from to access restaurant level & car park levels 5 & 6
Cazkumali 1 year ago
@benobve so do both sides open now have been modernized
Cazkumali 1 year ago
@Cazkumali No - it still opens the same sides as before.
Only one of the three lifts has been modernized. I thought all 3 were going to be modernized but tescos is trying to save money.
