  • I will be heading to Cape Sable on the 30th via canoe.. I am concerned about being swamped.. especially during the beach landing, will be solo and very little gear. Do you believe the weight in that canoe had a factor, or do you believe it would have happened anyway.

  • Yes, we were the first day out and fully loaded for two. While at sea, there was no danger of swamping, the sea was not that high, but our mistake was to head straight into a steeply sloped beach and try to drag the canoe out. The heavy load stopped us pulling out and sunk the stern when we did. Next time we will approach the shore broadside and get out while the boat is still afloat in the waves while parallel to the shore. But beware of the waves pushing the boat sideways when you step out.

  • Hey thanks for the reply and the explanation. I can see what your saying, for me it will be a really light load.. I think I will be ok. I will be watching the surf ;)

  • Yes, we had it cold during the day, and night. our route was convoluted to take advantage to the shelter of each island to the max, large water crossings to the min. and then we slept on an exposed, windy platform, in a well-vented tent at night, yes, it was a doozy, but it was in January, 18th-23rd.

  • I bet you guys were out there beginning of March 2009 when that wicked cold front passed through. Cold is tough enough but cold + wind is a doozy.
