I am updating my earlier post about the death of Joanna Burke. Joanna loved Winkie, this was an unfortunate tragedy. But she is buried among the ones she loved so much. We should all be so fortunate!
Anyone who has seen a ZOO should know that a small space for an elephant is absolutely CRAZY. I hate ZOOs, I refuse to pay them to pen animals in small enclosures. The elephant sanctuary is 2500 acres. The people who pay to visit circuses and ZOOs are the ones who need to be ashamed. I will be boycotting any enterprise that condones the penning of wild animals. We have Jails that pen up criminal humans...I don't like jails for any wild animals.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is great, but I don't see why so many PETA members believe these animals abused in roadside zoos and circuses should be sent to sanctuaries instead of a GOOD zoo. Sanctuaries are just big, unpopular, unregistered zoos
I just don't want to see an elephant STAND ON ITS HEAD!! and wear ridiculours headwear and paraded down main street. People at a lot (not all) of circuses and roadside zoos care for $ not the animals. And roadsid zoos are poor so they can't afford better treament for the animals. I know this is only one occasion adn doesn ring true everywhere but I'll never forget a video i saw a circus man beating an elephant with a batton and his partner encouraging him to make the animal cry-which it did.
Sanctuaries have to be registered and they are regulated by the government in most jurisdictions. This sanctuary is regulated by federal and state goverment agencies like the Dept. of Wildlife and the Dept. of Agriculture. Also elephants need lots of room to roam and zoos can't give them that since they need to keep the elephants where people can see them. The sanctuary lets them do their own thing.
Thank you very much for your endearing effort. I deeply appreciate what you do for them and what they do for you. We are always in debt with the nobility, detachment and sincere affection of our four leged firends. Congratulations
Thank goodness Carol has so much insight. Sweet winkie, I am sure did not mean for that to happen. Working with the elepahant is definetly a risk. Carol is very much like Lek. Also check out Elephant Nature Park in Chaing Mai Thailand. Elephants are rescued from abuse, logging camps, etc...
Those "keepers" that were beating her deserve strict justice. They should be thrown into a dungeon and chained and beaten until they scream.. fair is fair.
Thank you so much for sharing this so beautiful video about elephants...To give the second chance is wonderful...I just love/adore elephants & fight for them on Facebook.
That was cute with the dog. It really shows that those elephants must be fairly tamed and calm that a dog would trust an animal like that (One that could crush him/her like an ant)
I am proud of these people and it makes me miss America. Wow, only in America do you see such AMAZING qualities that are truly an example to the world. God bless Carol and her family, God bless America!! We need to see more of these at an age when Bush has destroyed the reputation of America. What a shame! God bless America!
Pingtampa, I agree- Carol is a remarkable women, unfortunately even in America as in the rest of the world, the number of facilities that engage in the abuse of animals outnumber those that protect them. If only zoos and circuses were banned for good.....
it's wonderful what they are doing, eveyone deserves a second chance, even elephants :). they are very lucky to have the opportunity wo work with them.
The Elephant Sanctuary earns my support. I love the fact that the elephants are free to be elephants - no shows, no interference, just excellent care, nutrition and interaction.
When Joe starts talking about Joanna and Winkie, the camera is focused on Misty. It's likely filming of Winkie was off limits to protect both Winkie and the film crew. Misty is a fun loving gal who bounces around the Sanctuary like a pup. Winkie is a sweetheart, but it's now known that she suffers from PTSD. No wonder, as she lived in misery before she was rescued. Like humans, elephants have different personalities and ways of internalizing and reactions to trauma.
I think that cetaceans and primates have some tough competition when it comes to outsmarting elephants. I think they are the most intelligent of all the animals hands down. Lowest birth-to-adult brain ratio, a brain more complex than ours with just as many neurons (compared with dolphins who have very few) and an emotional life as deep, if not deeper than our own (such as burying the dead, suffering from PTSD) all point to a highly intelligent animal. Go elephants. We can learn a lot from them
Fantastic video of an incredible sanctuary. Who would have ever thought that elephants could be found in Tennessee? Many THANK YOUs to CBCtv for presenting this important video.
I love those girls!! They are so sweet and I am so happy they are at the sanctuary. I wish ALL the suffering ellies could go there. Sigh, like Maggie.. Anyway, that Tarra is amazing and just so wonderful, what a sweetie.
How do people do that to animals?

they have a website for the sanctuary, too, where you can see all of their elephants and read their stories.. what they're doing is awesome

I'm not saying that sanctuaries are bad, I'm just saying how come they think that sending the animal to a sanctuary is the only solution?
