Michael this is simply amazing, we met a few times back in the day in high school...I just wanted to say I am so happy you are sharing your story with the world. Commend you on your bravery!
Interesting video idea. i actually tried to watch this twice, but never finshed either viewing. Sorry, but i'm allergic to anxiety and this video makes me too queasy.
Perhaps it is the music. i'll try again some other time. Thank you.
Kimber - GENIUS!!! I KNOW what you went through - a dark night of the soul. Dude is it an epidemic or just the result of a highly sensitive nature that pics up on things that no one ever taught us how to deal with...process. Like you - tried tons of pills. Then I just send to hell with it and took 60 to go to sleep ...for ever. Woke up in ICU 5 days later on a respirator. And then...quantum leap of light. Anyone who has gone through this is my spiritual family. Sending you love!
Michael, Thank you! I am moved not only by your words and courage, but your strength in honoring your friend. I too had a friend that died and wish I had your talent to honor her too. You have inspired me to try. Kudo's to you! I believe as you do; not until we put our face on mental illness, will the stigma disappear. From an advocate that is older, I truly believe that your generation will be the one that succeeds.
You are right, Cleopatra. She is a great girl. I had a lot of awesome people in my life and that's why I was able to get better. Monglo I totally understand that other people had it way worse than I did. I admit that I was lucky and I'm only speaking about this because I'm so lucky and am able to express myself. Alot of people don't have the ability to speak or the support I did. I feel like I owe it to them to do what I can. Thanks for all the support. You guys are awesome.
My favorite part of this video is how Michael credits his girlfriend with helping him get through it. Support is really important and you can tell she is a great girl and he really loves her. It takes a real man to have proper respect for a woman.
For someone who doesn't want to be labeled crazy it seems like you are pretty comfortable judging other people. I hate when people use the word bitchy. It's so misogynistic. Mental illness effects way more women than it does men. Double the amount of women suffer anxiety and depression. Why do you think that is? Maybe because more than double the amount of women are sexually assaulted and suffer from PTSD? That's why it always bothers me when people say its bio. It's also cultural.
I'm disturbed by the way a lot of people with mentel illness are treated. People think its okay to call people crazy. I'm not crazy. I just have different brain chemistry! What does crazy even mean?
@franklinstreetking TBH crraziness doesn't mean anything anymore. Good food is crazy. They dont mean that the food is mentally ill. Ppl don't realize that someone like you might be listening. Ur right though about ppl not giving 2 shits about the feelings of people with mental illness. My girl has borderline personality disorder and no one believes her. They just think she's bitchy.
@pmphillipmasters Even if you do have a mental illness you need to be accountable for your actions. I mean if she is mean because she has a problem I guess that's not her fault just hard to understand. I had a friend who was an alcolic and he became a dick when he drank. Yelling and cursing and being an asshole. Makes you think he shouldn't drink. I guess its not relly the same thing. Maybe that's why its so hard to feel compassion, becuase we don't know what's behind people's actions.
@pmphillipmasters I was just having a conversation with a friend of mine about an earlier video I did for the come out campaign. Asking why I didn't have people with borderline personality in the video. Best answer I could provide is that I didn't really know very much about it. I'll see what I can do to change that. Thanks for the support dude. And she's most definitely not alone. Every day I realize that a little more.
I love what you're doing Jason. I have bipolar disease and have dealt with it without help, or with poor - I won't say "help", because it didn't. Only in the last three years have I actually received interventions that work. So that's a lifetime of great struggle and guilt and misery. Although I don't keep my illness secret, neither do I speak of it openly. I still think I will be judged negatively. Still. So I honour you and respect your courage. I hope you get relief from your own struggles.
Most videos about depression suck donkey balls. This doesn't. Nice to see someone actually talking about this stuff without making it into a bunch of stupid fucking cliches. I'm surprised that this is really good when I was expecting it to be bullshit.
Think anxiety disorder is bad?Try the double whammy mind-fuck of paranoia disorder and anxiety disorder together at the same tier. I know someone very close to me that has lived with that for over a decade. What's really disconcerting is that some douchebags out there that see the fear in him prey upon his fear because they see him as weak.
I really appreciate all the love and support. Somehow we were the 3 most watched non profit video in Korea. Strange but real cool. Also 2 most viewed nonprofit in Canada. All of that happens because you guys are awesome. Thanks again.
@MichaelGrayKimber Great Job Buddy. I've been dealing with a Mental Illness for most of my life. I laid in a hospital bed while my friends were told "He'll never survive this one." But I did and I struggle everyday but I have an amazing Partner and a Beautiful daughter. I'm proud to see a fellow artist standing and opening eyes.
Excellent video...it really makes me believe more could have been done one...well actually two of my family members who have since passed...you're doing a great thing bringing this into the peoples eye
I watched this with a bunch of my friends. Just came up and we knew Mike Kimber from highschool and didn't really know what it was. Such a totally beautiful video! It got us talking about what we had gone through. Turns out we had a lot to talk about. Anyways Kimber, you probably don't remember me but Ill always remember this.
This is extremely well done - thank you. I urge everyone to share it around.
I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder 2 years ago. Thankfully I had the resources to seek help, but so many out there do not. There is NO reason to suffer in silence - this is not a choice! You cannot just "snap" out of it, I promise you. No one would choose this. Let's all be a part of eliminating the stigma and making mental health care accessible and affordable to all. Please share this around.
Thank you for this video. I also have a diagnosed anxiety disorder (with panic attacks), that almost meant that I had to leave my PhD program. I'm lucky enough that the school I'm attending has one of the best anxiety clinics in the country, but what meant the most to me is the non-judgemental support of my friends and family when I decided to start taking medication. This fight against the stigma of mental illness is so important , and I really appreciated waking up to this this morning.
This is a powerful video! I can most certainly relate to this, and my mother has just been diagnosed with anxiety disorder as well. I also believe many of friends are experiencing this to different degrees. It's sad really - I think there is an epidemic of anxiety and autistic spectrum disorders, mostly brought on by our busy lives, yet so many people live silently and do not seek support. Talk and practice pranayama! Thank you for sharing your story!
It's so wonderful to see mental illness recognized as a legitmate disease and people, like Michael, who move past the fear and stand up with out shame and discuss their illness. As one diagnosed with dyslimbia with bipolar features, I know how hard it is to live with a mental illness diagnosis.
thank you for taking the initiative to break down the stigma surrounding mental illness. nothing makes a person feel as alone as depression, and we arent alone.
Incredibly powerful message. We are working hard to help people like Michael and Jason, and those that support them. Please join our community and help advocate for others just like them.
Great job guys!!! This is an issue that needs more recognition everywhere. My condolences to your friend and his family and to everyone that has been affected by mental illnesses such as this.
We at wwwdotmindscreendotcomdotau are also passionate and dedicated to getting more than 1 out of 3 people seeking help. It's all about reducing the stigma.
I'll be forwarding your vid as widely as possible. Best of luck with this initiative. Marshall
Michael Kimber you are doing great things for mental health advocacy. you are doing incredible things for a cause that is far too unserved. Crazies, let the world know.
All I can say is that I'm very proud to have been his friend. I want everyone to talk about mental illness and suicide until we make it so that people feel comfortable enough to seek help. I miss Jason and it's been six years. Somethings you can't get over.
This video is dedicated to my friend Jason Lionel Walsh. He was a good friend of mine and was an incredibly gentle, kind and loving man. At the age of 20 he died as a result of his mental illness. No one ever talked to us about seeking help or the tricks your mind can play on you. When I was in my darkest hours, I remembered what it felt like to lose someone as amazing as Jason. Due to my own error the date of his death is wrong in the video. I'm truly sorry to his friends and family.
