Wow @ the sheer professionalism of the flight crew & ATC. Really admire these guys. Yea sure they are just doing a job but lets get real this is no "just a jib" where your office PC wont turn on. Those guys up front are a highly trained bunch of people. Nuff respek. All those hours of engine-fails in the sweatbox (sim) pays off!
OK a couple of dumb questions. 1) Why do I keep seeing a flame every second. Is the engine trying to restart? Then I noticed the engine just stopped flaming...did the pilot shut it down ( I guess you cannot restart the thing in mid-flight)? I had no idea a 757 could not only takeoff but rapidly gain altitude with 1 engine.
@SteveWard3928 engines on airliners are made to be able to start in flight. the aircraft are designed to be able to climb affectively on one engine. the engine flames may have been compressor stall from the bent blades. the flame stopped because an engine fire extinguisher was used to make sure the engine didnt catch fire. aviation is a very prudent industry and it takes a number of serious problems to cause a plane to crash.
@TheAvigdor no choice but to continue takeoff, they had rotated already, you reach a speed before rotate at which you must take off because you cant stop in the remaining space at that space. the speed is calculated for each flight and called V1
Great flying! The first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes of airline flights are the most dangerous times.I'd need a change of underwear after that one.The recent landing on the Hudson River in New York was a bird strike too...multiple strikes,IIRC.
Amazing recovery! The calmness in the ATC dialogue between controller and crew is incredible. Feel sorry for the bird it just ended its life running into a much bigger 57 bird
That's interesting, Were you aware of what was happening? Could you see the flames from the engine out of the window? and did everyone manage to stay calm?
the point of shooting a chicken at an engine is to prove that the engine will contain an impact without throwing compressor / turbine blades off... not to prove the engine will continue working after a birdstrike, a twin engine aircraft like the 757 is designed to climb out on a single engine so engine failure on take off is not a problem, as shown in this video, see the videos on the british airtours 737 that suffered an uncontained blade seperation at manchester in 1985
i thought bird strikes don't matter, i saw videos of airbus and boeing shooting chickens at the engines, can someone please answer my question and tell me why a bird killed this engine and when chickens are shot during testing nothing happens?
@abedkh - the point of shooting a chicken at an engine is to prove that the engine will contain an impact without throwing compressor / turbine blades off... not to prove the engine will continue working after a birdstrike, a twin engine aircraft like the 757 is designed to climb out on a single engine so engine failure on take off is not a problem, as shown in this video, see the videos on the british airtours 737 that suffered an uncontained blade seperation at manchester in 1985
I actually met the first officer on that flight about a year ago, At a Captains dinner party at heathrow and he is a really Nice guy and very down to earth I am a 747-400 pilot and if that ever happend to me i hope i could stay that calm. Good Vid.
We pilots are trained to act professional and keep our cool in situations such as this. Months and years of simulator and real-world training make emergency procedures a second-hand nature (which they should be - seeing that first priority is always maintaining positive control of the aircraft).
Unless the aircraft is severed in half, or a wing completely comes off or something - panicking is totally out of the question. Afterall, if the pilots panic, what hope do the passengers have?
@belfastgreen Nice try pal. But I have my commercial certificate with instrument and multi ratings. I'm also a CFII-A and I've received training in the CRJ-200.

it's not the smallest thing in the world., try a CRJ200 or a MD88. that's uncomforatable (especially the CRJ200, the Md88 really wasn't that bad)

2:09? This video demonstrates the skill that pilots must exhibit during an emergency.

Nice job to the pilot

they were lucky that it was not the critical engine that was hit by the bird or else they can't fly like that..congratulation to the pilot..nice emergency landing...

i never knew there was a more important engine on a plane...

the "critical" engine?

Amazing how not even a bird up the airplane engine can bring down the affected airplane. The plane just keeps going and turns around for an emergency landing.
