To amend my last comment, quilico is fairly good, just not up to the level of Ramey's performance. No disrespect intended.

Why does practically every person who sings Escamillo just stand or walk slowly around and sing. Escamillo is the equivalent of a rock star! I've seen this role done perfectly exactly once...by Samuel Ramey in the DVD from the 1987 Met production. now he acts like a rock star! One reviewer said of Ramey's performance, "At last, Escamillo is no longer the dullest man in Spain!" Ramey's Escamillo is on YouTube.

One word: stunning. Gino Quilico may be my favorite Escamillo yet, and Maria Ewing is certainly the most gorgeous Carmencita, as far as I can recall. The only change I would make to the cast is to have Placido Domingo as Don Jose. Is this production on DVD?
