I think Vargas is wonderful here. It's nice to hear a tenor SING this role without all the darkening/pushing, besides other similar sized voices have been successful in this role (Bergonzi, Gigli, Aragall, etc)
I doubt it there's anyone who could have done a better job in the title role of Verdi's longest opera, this uncut&complete, original French version - or if anyone has done more DC the last 15 years than RV. Being fully committed and involved in this demanding production -rolling over & crawling, singing in various positions on the floor, being treated like a punching bag and violently shoved to the floor, AND doing a comedy act -RV lasted 4+ hours and triumphed despite lingering effects of illness.
I can now see where the designer is mixing traditional elements- at least in this scene- Its uncoceivable though that the spanish official doesn't recognize Don Carlos- too much really. Vargas has no business singing this role- completely miscast in my opinion-

My goodness!!!... everything is very good, especially Vargas, but that guy Benedikt sounds like a 200 yo fake of a baritone. Horror!

Vargas a great tenor but should stay in the lighter repertoire. He is no Don Carlo

this chorus is one of verdi's most catching melodies, i think! a pity it is missed out in a lot of stagings (as is the entire first act!).
