Those other female artists, while talented, were still following the old blueprint for women in the industry. Madonna came in and rewrote it. Think the 1984 VMAs. On her first album, no one thought she would be a megastar, but she kept peeling back the layers and she proved to more than just an r&b dance artist.

The guy to the right was Martin Burgoyne who died of AIDS. The tall black guy, known as "Bags", dropped out of performing with Madonna, so later he was replaced with her brother Christopher. The black girl, Erica Bell, remained friends with Madonna..not sure if she is still friends to this day, but a lot of Madonna bios have her talking about Madonna.
