I have troubles with the background picture :(. I do exactly the same as you but at the end i get the image center in the center ,therefore it doesnt cover the whole page. Could this problem be because i dont have any text or layout on the page ? :(
@theonlygredd318 most websites are anywhere from 800 to 1000 pixels wide. I would try maybe 1200 pixels wide by maybe 1000 high and see what that looks like.
Thanks for going through the effort to post this very helpful intro. On a related note, how do you make the foreground semi transparent, with the background "bleeding through" the entire page?
@spelunkerd Hi thanks. You can do that multiple ways. One way would be to use CSS to adjust the opacity. Another way would be to use semi-transparent images in your foreground content.
this tutorial is exactly wat i was looking for but i'm having some problems ... in dreamweaver when i add the background i can see it properly but when i open the page as a webpage i can't see the image i added to the background just the color i added ... do you know why that is happening ?
@Rubzable I'm really not sure what would do that. The best advice I can give is to double check the link to the image file and make sure the path is correct.

@sahoooo I'm not really sure but my wild guess is that the image isn't large enough. Try a bigger picture and see what happens.
