  • 0:29 is where the band The Misfits got its skull logo

  • Review insidious it fukin scary

  • what happend to all the london after midnight copies

  • I think that if London After Midnight is ever found, it'll probably turn out to be average (although a copy would be pretty cool). Here's an example:

Tomb of the Cybermen, a 60's serial of Doctor Who which was previously among the list of many lost serials of this programme, was found in 1993, 26 years after it was broadcast. During this time, it had gained a reputation in fandom for being the best Doctor Who ever, but when people watched it on VHS, it turned out to be average.

  • @animationdude56 What you talkin 'bout?! Tomb of the Cybermen is awesome!

  • @ThomasMFilms well, we all have different opinions. It's not bad (certainly not as bad as The Twin Dilemma) but not as good as Inferno. Somewhere between good, great and ok.

  • 0:28-0:29 ... Thats fuckin' awesome.

  • As true to Leroux's phantom as Lon Chaney was, the movie would've been even better had they kept to the original plotline AND had not let hack director Ruper Julian anywhere NEAR the film! Originally, the first version followed the novel quite closely, and the Phantom's last words were, "All I ever wanted, Daroga, was to be loved". He lived with hate and died for love. So yes - there definitely was a romantic theme in the midst of this mystery/horror story. Lon Chaney was the greatest!!

  • @YeMightyDespair

Well put. Personally I think the Claude rains version is my favorite both because it presents him in a sympathetic light while at the same time acknowledging his crimes. He's obsessed, pitiable, and villainous all at once. It's a great performance.

  • كويتي بحق ! افلام رعب حقيقه انها تبعث الخوف

  • can someone tell me the soundtrack's name

  • there were more remakes of the movie/book like The universal 1943 version staring Claude Rains and a 1962 hammer production starring Micheal Grough.

  • People STOP Judging Phantom of of the Opera!! It's NOT meant to be a Horror story! It's meant to be a Tragic, complicated love story about a Deformed man who was just going through Unrequited love. It's as simple as That! So Shut up, you culture-less Heathens!!

  • @MaryHelsing It was meant as a crime mystery with an element of horror. Gaston Leroux was a mystery writer. The love story came with later remakes and musicals. The "phantom" Eric was meant to be sympathetic, but ultimately his obsession drives him to kidnapping and murder and he has to be stopped. Taking away the crime and horror elements and only leaving the love story takes away from the overall complexity and genius of the novel. Wanting those aspects kept does not make one a crass moron.

  • you need to see insidious then review it

  • i want to see this kovie but my parents say its bullshit :D

  • @kenman66 and MrFloatingrock

    Sorry to hear about that.

  • My parents are deaf

  • @kenman66 me too :D

  • London after Midnight was destroyed in a fire in the MGM movie vault in 1967

  • Is it not pronounced "notra dam"?

  • i love the spoof they did of this in gremlins 2

  • I HAVE THE REMAKE OF THIS MOVIE!

  • @ultimatesharpzilla the remake sucks

  • whats the song playing in the background

  • 1:33 looks like the cover of the NES "classic" (now with the with the nerd seal of DISapproval) Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

  • The hunchback got a full 100% on rotten tomatoes.

  • Musical: Brilliant (changed my life). 1925 silent film: Brilliant. ( closest to the book if you don't like reading XD ) book :Amazingly brilliant. POTO is just beautiful, amazing, and all the other good things in this world <3

  • @jelliclekat24 .. What about the movie Musical?

  • London After Midnight I have this film lol

  • @faredust77 BULLSHIT.

  • since her show finished their making a story of her life

    "Phantom of the oprah"

  • Another great film from Lon Chaney that, I believe horror fans would enjoy, is West Of Zanzibar. It's not a "monster movie", but it's a very dark, melodramatic, revenge film. Kind of like The Black Cat and The Raven, if you've seen Cinemassacre's reviews for those, or the films, of course.

Also, there's a certain version of 1925 The Phantom on Youtube. It has it's own orchestral soundtrack, its been digitally enhanced and color tints were added, as well. It's a wonderful movie experience.

  • The Phantom of the Opera soundstage still stands on the Universal Studios backlot to this day, and it is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Lon Chaney Sr...

  • i always wondered if any sites to watch this with sub titles with the actual dialog that the actors were speaking?? Their mouths are moving , you know like reading lips.

  • The music is Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. By Bach. Thumbs up for spreading the word and ending the endless music questions

  • I had no idea. :)

  • I find that this is an oxymoron because it is supposed to be an opera, yet it is a silent film!

  • @Fangvampirehunter50 "The Phantom of the Opera" is not an opera, it's ABOUT an opera. I know it's not too obvious, and you're forgiven as it is a common mistake.

  • fuck musicals. SILENT VERSION FTW.

  • is it weird that i watched this movie in school in my music class

  • @H0llyW00dUndeadFtw ur music class is awsome!

  • Comment removed

  • Joel Shumacher (The one who made BATMAN AND ROBIN) remade this.

  • ...then Shumacher came along and raped it.

  • James review metropolis

  • I watched this when I was a kid and I was almost scared to death of the phantom's face. What's strange is that I watched it again and it dosen't seem the same.Or maybe it's the 1916 version that is lost.

  • Does anyone know what's the title of the song that's playing in the background?

  • @SpamExtraSpamandSpam Faust or Haxxen

  • Lon Chaney does have dialogue in that film actually, though he does use a lot of body language

  • he looks like a gorilla with that "Disease" Michael Jackson said he had.

  • wtf? he never did the shining! that movie was so awesome

  • @coleisawesome532 well,he did review it but not in a monster madness but like a regular review

  • dude u forgot frankstien he did the first movie of frankstien u probably did a video about that too

  • pause it at 0:36 quikly lon chaney mask look likes grapefriut's sister with a messed up face from the annoying orange thumps up

  • i thought lon chaney did the wolfman oh ya that was lon chaney jr oops

  • the backround music at 1:12! toccata and fugue in d minor! we did that in band class! :P

  • where can i find the 2010 reviews instead of going on his own website?

  • Chaney did make one talking picture, a sound remake of "The Unholy Three", and he was as remarkable as ever.

  • Chaney is the greatest actor of all time, and this version is the greatest horror film of all time.

  • @tabbygail7 I wouldn't say its a pure horror film. I'd say its a mystery/detective/tragic love story with some historical facts and horror elements thrown in. :)

  • The Lon Chaney phantom, and the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical are the ones you have to check out.

  • Lon Chaney is one of the greatest actors who ever lived. More people need to know about his accomplishments and appreciate his role in films.

  • @WillC true but sadly most people dont even watch black and white movies let alone silent movies.

  • @WillC Sadly though, most people won't watch black and white films just because it doesn't have color.

  • A silent film actor died of throat cancer and u think it's ironic that he died with the sound era...

  • @rockinmutton He died with the silent era.

  • if you havent seen the Phantom of the Opera with Lon Chaney. U R no phantom fan

  • The PHAAAAAAAAAANTOM of the opera is theeeeeeeeere~~~~ inside ~~~ your miiiiiiiind!!!!! *bum bum bum bum bum*

  • If you like old silent horror movies you might want to check out Volkodlak on my channel.

  • i saw a woman buying this a the blue box :D

  • i read a thing about london after midnight it seems intresting juding from what i read.

Also the ice warriors is considered to be the holy grail for DR WHO fans lol. episode 2 and 3 are lost which sucks im 19 nd didnt get to see em.

  • Lon Chaney looks like The Penguin from Batman Returns played by Danny DeVito when he plays the vampire in London after midnight.

Well atleast i think so he just needs an pointier nose xD btw the 1925 Phantom of the Opera still rocks =P

  • The Andrew lloyd webber musical is great, but the lon chaney film is a must see for every phantom fan.

  • um james lon chaney sr didnt die of throat cancer he died of lung cancer

  • @luigiblox

Nope, he died of a throat hemorrhage. He had lung cancer but the infection inhis throat was the reason he died.

  • Bach's toccata and fugue in d minor

  • i need to know the song in the backround

  • @BigJackFilms Bach's toccata and fugue in d minor

  • I love the effects in this movie. Chaney did an amazing job on his makeup and this role just made me so interested in effects makeup.

  • Comment removed

  • Can anyone find the music from this vid?

  • damn, he did some amazing make-up work

  • actually i didn't find this movie scary at all

  • Chaney's portrayl of Eric in the Silent Verson is often seen as the definitive verson of the Phantom

  • I just watched Hammer Studios version of The Phantom Of The Opera. Wonderful film.

  • london after midnight was ruind in 1965 mgm fire so there could be a copy left but its proble gone forever

  • @godxofxrock9 but maybe someone made another copy and its hidden somewhere. you never know

  • Both The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame truly demonstrates Lon Chaney as being an actor of many faces in the silent era. He played two different monsters that we can sympathize with and understand who they really are. I'm sure their remakes are good, but only Chaney can deliver the characters better!

  • 1:29

    Lon Chaney fell off

  • ahhh this symphony of Bach chills me on my back

  • this vids are very intresting

  • @omarornelas95 Then post it. I won't believe it until ALL of YouTube sees it.

  • why a color part? did they coloured the secuense recently or it was filmed in color, i didn't know that was possible in the 20's

  • @panqueque445 Color film was around at the time, but EXTREMELY expensive! To do the whole movie in color would have cost too much. However, the scene needed color for the Phantom's costume to make an impact.

  • @detrius82 according to imdb there was another scene with color, but it is lost, it's amazing!

  • @panqueque445 It was shot in technicolor. There were actually three of them, but only one has survived and it was found sometime (I think) in the 1970's

  • the remakes where ok but this is the best

  • you probably know this already but copys of london after midnight were burned in an mgm vult in 1967. by the way you coud probably make a james bound retrospective

  • @soniksonny96000 Why was it burned? Was it on purpose or an accident? Surely MGM wouldn't be such as Disney (ironic that they are now owned by such,) they would preserve films for years to come.

  • can this movie really be classified as a horror film? I always saw the phantom story as a tragedy. I guess that's more the musical though.

  • I like how the Phantom's face looks like a skull.

  • @70alt1 Well, in the book , Erik (yes,my love has a name in case you didn't know XD) 's face is described as a deaths head, with yellowish skin,2 holes where the nose should have been, and more. :)

  • @omarornelas95 Bull! It dosn't exist. However, if you arn't fibbing you need to send it the the national archives. But I really doubt that you have it. There's a reason it's considered a "lost film".

  • @glamgirlsg Hey, I found a 10 second surviving clip on Youtube. It's just the vampire walking around, but it's something. Also, I know the ending, so if you don't mind spoilers, tell me, and I'll tell you.

  • I officially declare Lon Chanies death IRONIC

    yes with caps

  • Comment removed

  • i love the toccata he plays

  • Wow! My grammar was horrible, there. lol

  • The Gerard Butler phantom looks more like he's been badly burned than hidieously deformed.

  • @godzilla964 No my dear, Gerard Butler (no offence to you Gerik phan girls) looked like he had a pretty bad sunburn, and had the worst voice EVER .

  • he is so freaky

  • Wait, he died of throat cancer?

    thats the most unlogic death

  • @whopper1209 Well, Lon Chaney was a chronic smoker throughout most of his adult life and that's what killed him eventually. :(

  • Unfortunatley," London After Midnite" is a lost film.

  • whats that weird 2 headed thing in the begining from?

  • @campervan25 That's Ash in Army Of Darkness

  • i just watched it, man that was epic

  • died of throat canser at the end of the silet film era.

now THAT is more than a coincidense.

  • @marcus8374 you are correct. it is IRONY. or POETIC JUSTICE.

  • @marcus8374 cancer

  • @brutalistlegend Thank you.

  • @marcus8374 that has to be the most ironic thing in the world

  • @marcus8374 Bender: "now THAT. IS. IRONYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!"

  • @marcus8374 The greatest irony in the history of ironys.

  • @marcus8374 if lon chaney were alive today, what if he had a high-pitched cracked up squeekey voice? lol!

  • @marcus8374 it's called irony ):

  • @marcus8374 maybe Bella Legosi was so desperate for teh role of dracula that he murdered Lon Chaney & covered up the murder by a lie about him dying of throat cancer. LOL

  • @marcus8374 its pretty big coincidence that your comment has the same amount of thumbs up as number on my name lol

  • @marcus8374 mabey lon chaneys voice sounded like shit, and it was better off silent.

  • @marcus8374 someone could've put a stake in his throat. :P

  • it's a great movie :D

  • THe 1925 Pahntom was a great film. That face has become iconic.

  • I always wondered why I couldn't find a copy of london after midnight.

    Thats too bad.

  • What music is playing while Jame's is talking about the Phantom? It's so familiar, but I can't place the name.

  • Nevermind, I found it. It Jahan Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, in case anyone wants to know.

  • and then many remakes followed.

  • @batmanrules16 Oh,yes . many many many many MANY followed . lol its true

  • LOL I love that. "Damn, he's pissed!"

Lon Chaney was definitely a master of his art.

  • man throat cancer that's really hard. My dad had it. Its really hard both to the carrier and the people around. (i can't think of any words other then carrier so forgive me if that sounds insulting)

  • great movie whats the name of background music that starts 0:37 and goes to 1:00 ty

  • i think its also ironic that he died of throat cancer and he acting in silent movies. great movie, the 2000 one is good too, but i like this one a bit better.

  • He did act in one sound film "The Unholy Three" - a remake of an earlier 1925 version that he did. :)

  • Lon Chaney did a GREAT job with the makeup for PotO,especially for the time. Chaney's vampire is really creepy and easily owns most modern portrayals but still falls short of the king....Count Orlok.

  • In Universal's Halloween Horror Nights this year, the Haunted House called Silver Screams has visitors walking through scenes from several horror films, including "Phantom." There are a couple good scares in it.

  • Don't knock theatrical works just because you're an uncouth, uncultured hick. It was a musical, it was not meant to be scary, and the constant singing was supposed to imitate the singing of an actual opera.

  • I agree.

  • Lon Chaney is pretty good actor.

  • james pronounced Notre Dame completely wrong lols

    Nodrah Damey? lol

  • Lon Chaney is epc.

  • Nice vid

  • his face scares the shit outta me

  • i saw an original print of this too! haha

  • the hunch back of notre dame is pronounced (notch ree darm)

  • Actually, it's more like "no-tru(flat "u")-dam

  • When you do your next Monster Madness, make sure you do Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923)

  • isnt it pronounced notre dom

  • i was lon cheneys lover

  • go back and love him

  • damn this was awesome!!

  • the guy at 0:10 actually freaked me out =C

  • why so "cool" , asshole?

  • Comment removed

  • oops wrong window lol

but i yeah i was jk

  • ok ;) sry
