I think that if London After Midnight is ever found, it'll probably turn out to be average (although a copy would be pretty cool). Here's an example:
Tomb of the Cybermen, a 60's serial of Doctor Who which was previously among the list of many lost serials of this programme, was found in 1993, 26 years after it was broadcast. During this time, it had gained a reputation in fandom for being the best Doctor Who ever, but when people watched it on VHS, it turned out to be average.
@ThomasMFilms well, we all have different opinions. It's not bad (certainly not as bad as The Twin Dilemma) but not as good as Inferno. Somewhere between good, great and ok.
As true to Leroux's phantom as Lon Chaney was, the movie would've been even better had they kept to the original plotline AND had not let hack director Ruper Julian anywhere NEAR the film! Originally, the first version followed the novel quite closely, and the Phantom's last words were, "All I ever wanted, Daroga, was to be loved". He lived with hate and died for love. So yes - there definitely was a romantic theme in the midst of this mystery/horror story. Lon Chaney was the greatest!!
Well put. Personally I think the Claude rains version is my favorite both because it presents him in a sympathetic light while at the same time acknowledging his crimes. He's obsessed, pitiable, and villainous all at once. It's a great performance.
Watch 'Oliver Twisted' on the OliverTwistedMovie channel, right here on YouTube. See the entire official DVD for FREE, 24/7/365, the movie and three related educational bonus features every no/low budget movie maker should watch.
People STOP Judging Phantom of of the Opera!! It's NOT meant to be a Horror story! It's meant to be a Tragic, complicated love story about a Deformed man who was just going through Unrequited love. It's as simple as That! So Shut up, you culture-less Heathens!!
@MaryHelsing It was meant as a crime mystery with an element of horror. Gaston Leroux was a mystery writer. The love story came with later remakes and musicals. The "phantom" Eric was meant to be sympathetic, but ultimately his obsession drives him to kidnapping and murder and he has to be stopped. Taking away the crime and horror elements and only leaving the love story takes away from the overall complexity and genius of the novel. Wanting those aspects kept does not make one a crass moron.

Musical: Brilliant (changed my life). 1925 silent film: Brilliant. ( closest to the book if you don't like reading XD ) book :Amazingly brilliant. POTO is just beautiful, amazing, and all the other good things in this world <3
Another great film from Lon Chaney that, I believe horror fans would enjoy, is West Of Zanzibar. It's not a "monster movie", but it's a very dark, melodramatic, revenge film. Kind of like The Black Cat and The Raven, if you've seen Cinemassacre's reviews for those, or the films, of course.
Also, there's a certain version of 1925 The Phantom on Youtube. It has it's own orchestral soundtrack, its been digitally enhanced and color tints were added, as well. It's a wonderful movie experience.
The Phantom of the Opera soundstage still stands on the Universal Studios backlot to this day, and it is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Lon Chaney Sr...
i always wondered if any sites to watch this with sub titles with the actual dialog that the actors were speaking?? Their mouths are moving , you know like reading lips.
@Fangvampirehunter50 "The Phantom of the Opera" is not an opera, it's ABOUT an opera. I know it's not too obvious, and you're forgiven as it is a common mistake.
I watched this when I was a kid and I was almost scared to death of the phantom's face. What's strange is that I watched it again and it dosen't seem the same.Or maybe it's the 1916 version that is lost.
@tabbygail7 I wouldn't say its a pure horror film. I'd say its a mystery/detective/tragic love story with some historical facts and horror elements thrown in. :)
Both The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame truly demonstrates Lon Chaney as being an actor of many faces in the silent era. He played two different monsters that we can sympathize with and understand who they really are. I'm sure their remakes are good, but only Chaney can deliver the characters better!
@panqueque445 Color film was around at the time, but EXTREMELY expensive! To do the whole movie in color would have cost too much. However, the scene needed color for the Phantom's costume to make an impact.
@panqueque445 It was shot in technicolor. There were actually three of them, but only one has survived and it was found sometime (I think) in the 1970's
