beautifully rendered! Bravo Alvarez particularly! As for the visual presentation, there is no way Elvira would have chosen this totally unheroic looking sad-sack Ernani over the handsome, majestic, virile Carlo in this production.
Yup. He started as a bass and then moved to baritone. He really was a baritone with a bass overtone. He had an amazing range as well going up to the high C, which is extremely rare for a bass to have.
@DarthHito Bastianini is Bastianini, and thankfully he had the voice to sing the way he sang... it's totally futile to discuss whether he was bass or baritone..
@MissLadyboy007 It may indeed be the sound quality, because I heard Alvarez live and the too has that wonderful dark shimmer in his voice. He may not quite be the reincarnated Bastianini, but Carlos has a most exquiste voice and he uses it very intelligently.
At least he doesn't scream

Looks as if everyone has a costume from another time period/opera. Funny.
Singing is great.

It is true that Bastianini started his career as a bass but his true voice was a dark baritone.

It maybe the sound quality of this clip, but I think Alvarez's voice sounds too lightweight.
Mind you I have just been listening to the great Ettore Bastianini!
