Well, you who fans won't like this but....anyone who's ever sat behind a drum kit....will listen to this n think what the fks the guy doing on the drums....it's garbage! I always had mi doubts about moon....he couldn't look like such a twat in the tv studios if he was really any good. Sorry folks!!
@pikeman07 You can call it garbage all you want, but he could do it consistently, under the effects of most man made drugs, night in night out, and still have the energy to call you a twat. I think that, more than sticking to traditional beats, he just "felt" the music and accompanied with his own zany style. It's like Neil Peart's solos, un-replicable, but he does it on a consistent basis.
Man, he was the drummer for one of the most respected rock and roll bands of the best generation of rock and roll. That's gotta say something about Keith. Plus, he was basically dying when this was recorded in like 77 or 78. Still pretty good fro a guy who basically is on fucking cloud nine by now in the show. Just a thought, mann...
@pikeman07 dude, by this time in his career he was shot. He was a shell of the drummer that he was. If you want to listen to him play well..listen to any songs before 77....he was on the top of his game then...i agree w/u that this drumming on this song is horrible...it's a sad thing what years and years of drug and alcohol abuse does to a person..
The Who played the Hammersmith Odeon in '78, and Keith was definitely alive and well that night! Part way thru the gig, he started to give the crowd some stick, and Pete told him to shut up. He refused, and was whisked up into the roof in a flying harness! Can't recall the support, but Tim Brooke-Taylor was linkman between the sets, and when the crowd got impatient for The Who to come onstage, he said he wouldn't go until he'd had two minutes solid abuse. Boy, did he get some!
The WGFA from the Swansea '76 soundboard is 800% more powerful and Moonie at the peak of keeping Townshend on the edge of chaos. It's from the same show as DFTW on the By Numbers re-issue - and that should give indication of the staggering power of the band and sound quality. This concert released in its entirety would silence all doubters that The Who in 1976 were the most powerful, engaging and explosively chaotic band ever to walk this planet. So Curbishley et al. why no release it?
@MrSistermaryelephant Isn't it an odd coincidence that two of the greatest rock bands ever fell apart after the respective deaths of the two greatest rock drummers ever?
after seeing this, i fell in love with pete townshend and his incredible pinwheel...i love when he comes sliding in on his knees; it's freaking intense!
this isnt the same one as in the kids are alright. 7 months earlier. they only played this once in this show. the one your thinking of is at shepperton film studios in 1978, where they did several takes of each song. this is a completely different gig

Is that really that controversial a comment, jmeister109? Townshend has said many times what a bad gig that was. Entwistle said it was the only time he can recall being drunk on stage. They were rusty and out of it and it shows. Try to remember the line between fan and blind worship.
the song jagger wished he would have written if only he had the talent

I'm sorry, but Keith Moon sounds like shit on this version. Compare this to a live version from 1971-1973 and it's fucking amazing what he's doing!

Seriously, wow.
They apparently got really drunk before this performance, which is why they had to do a gig at Shepperton for Kids are Alright.
