the reference is to syd barrette who was the old pink..and was living with his mother and had been in the care of an insane asylum....the movie the wall is not autobiographical but does weave the lifes of roger waters (whos father died at anzio during world war2) and syds life which many believe was ruined by the excess of drug use during the bands early period....also this is on the original vinyl as well as the movie versions of empty spaces...ie syd left the empty space...
