"The song itself was conceived during a very dark period in Reznor's life. When on stage in 2009 he disclosed that he had rented a house at the time on an ocean with the external intent to write some music, but in reality had contemplated suicide there. This song was the only song to come out of that time and place. He still feels strange playing it live because it serves as a reminder of this dark period in his life."
Beautiful song. Beautiful video, too. Personally, I would've liked to see more blue/green/turqouise wave-type stuff. But hey, even like this, it fits perfectly!
I had never heard this til now, it reminds me alot of the Ghosts albums. Really ambient and melodic, even when it hits the drum line, it feels very natural and flowing.
One of Trent's best instrumentals, this and Starfuckers was the reason I bought the Fragile. Only a couple of songs on Ghosts compares to this peice, (I love that album too though).
you are wrong, that is not the way it is lyrically put, you corrected someone with an error, he was right to begin with. Lyrically speaking, that is exactly what Reznor used
This is so damn cool. from a videographer's point of view, it is so simple, yet so powerful. I like it very very very much :) I have always wanted to make a vid for this song. Now, I don't know, you nailed it!___I along with many people here rate this as one of my favorite songs. It actually makes me cry. I will stop babbling in a comment area now... Great video/Great song!!!
yes i do know what a concept album is (im not a retard) and i understand that this ablum is about taking something that is broken and trying to fix it and or trying keep something from falling apart. but what the hell does that have to do with the two songs having the same bassline? i did google it later after i made that comment though and it said that the two songs are "sister songs" and thats why they have the same bassline. Next time i will google before i comment.
Well Ive listened to concept albums before i heard the fragile, but the fragile was the first concept album that I've heard that contained sister songs, so I was a bit new to the whole thing. Now I know.....
This is from the album The Fragile. The whole concept behind it was to make everything sound like it was falling apart. He even used instruments that were, such as broken violins, and that piano which you felt needed tuning. It was all on purpose.
@TragicTantrum it's genius because at the same time so many of the songs have recurring motifs that connect and bring them together, juxtaposing that feeling of disintegration. Alot of the thematic components of La Mer can be heard on Into the Void.
Yes and at 2:29 there is what looks like a painting of a cloudy scene with a large crucifix, then shortly thereafter a face fills the view. Interesting stuff.
this is the first time ive seen this, is it an offical video? love the trrack, gave me tingles down my spine and ive heard it so many times b4 , much lovex
This the first time I've heard "La Mer" and have seen the video (9/10/06). Emotional, deep, and extremely moving. Reznor is not only passionate, but he is a very sensitive man. Another experience he shares in the only way he can--with honesty.
naturally..anyways seriously thank you for sharing this video it think i wouldve died :(( nah i just love NIN..aaahhh NIN nine inch nails!! goes in a corner and rocks
The Fragile is my favourite NIN album. A true masterpiece.

Four minutes of painful, agonizing struggle represented by the dissonance to get to the most beautiful 30ish seconds Trent Reznor has ever recorded.
This song has long been my all time favorite NIN song.

the lyrics (translated) say
and when the day arrives
I'll become the sky
and I'll become the sea
and the sea will come to kiss me
for I am going home
nothing can stop me
[this has to be my favourite nin song x]
bassdudess 5 years ago
But, marteler means to hammer, not to become - and it's infinitive. And arrivé is perfect tense... So the first bit would be:
And the day has arrived
To hammer the sky
And to hammer the sea
Also it doesn't say anything about going home, just being out of her cell...
Not criticising you, just interested how this translation got around, as it's a little weird.
I guess it's the whole poetic license thing...
