  • Great album, I got it a couple of months back and I listened to it from front to back. Its one of those timeless albums that a few people would know.

  • ...'I was hanging at j. mascis' house playing music..." NAME DROP!..

  • @porkpiepaul- Except Thurston and Sonic Youth is bigger than Dinosaur Jr. :P

  • I really think that all my fucking life is shit when I see videos like this.

  • @mynameisedable you know wendy?

  • hes the major Ginger rocker

  • I miss the real sy.

  • Sonic Youth and stuff like this reminds of cloudy days in Minneapolis growing as a teenager in the early 90s. I'm glad they went back to there roots.

  • Well, if Mr J. sometimes in this lifetime wants to give out master classes on guitar to keep the legacy around, I´ll hitchhike all the way North. I maybe will take the approach to hang on the guitar even more.

  • @Welllsworth J has great feel but I don't really consider him that tech a player - don't get me wrong I love Dinosaur - anyways great interview with Thurston - cheers

  • @JefferySchmitz yeah, your right dude. But just the action of hanging around and watching can bring so much. He´s been playing obsesivly (a good thing) for so long, so he must be like one of the ultimate guitar mysterios. From bands to books to gear. And just hanging around, watching closely, sweeping his basement haha could bring so much...

  • I saw him play an accoustic set at Red 7 at SXSW this year he was very impressive on the accoustic I wasn't really expecting it - was great show

  • The thing he's playing at the end kinda sounds like the intro to candle

  • It amazes me how little Thurston's aged...

  • He's not God or a saint, he's a guifted sinner...

  • man, i worship this god

  • @speakbraille man i worship this man

  • God,I worship this man.

  • Thurston looks like he should still be in grad school.

  • its the haircut

  • my life is crap

  • @grzesieksz wanna fuck?

  • @grzesieksz Get a guitar and a notebook. Thats all I used to become a satisfied thurston Moore. And ignore all the cultural impulses.

  • tree's outside the academy is very good.

  • he still loox like a young man tho kim loox aged now

  • shes still the hotness though

  • cool

  • This guy is my idol

  • Trees Outside The Academy is such an amazing album

  • He´s a legend! How can one man write so many beautiful songs!?!?!? And he´s really smart...

  • lol you can tell he's smart because he's got books and he wears glasses

  • everytime i'd see him out and about in NYC it was in bookstores.

  • you like children of bodom.

what does that tell everyone who'll read your comment?

  • No.

  • Shut the fuck up you cocksucker.

  • listening to children of bodom doesn't make you smart. personally i like any form of rock or metal so im not gonna say children of bodom are shit but..... a majority of alternative rock bands and indie rock bands have Sonic Youth as an influence(which era of sonic youth is a different story, most people know them for their late 80s to early 90s alternative stuff or their newer more indie stuff. but lots of people also like their noise rock beginnings) and they're better guitarists than COB

  • I met Thurston at Farmers Market the other day at a resturaunt. seems i was the only one who recognized him in a while

  • trees outside the academy is a splendid record.and thurston is way cool.

  • he's delicious

  • The song is called "Never Day". It's on the Trees Outside the Academy album.

  • wats tha song a the start of the video? it kiked ass

  • Do you mean the song at the VERY beginning? That was a Four Tet tune...good stuff.

  • Hello

What is the guitar peavey combo amp at 0.25

    thanks

    Nico

  • Once you reach the mental age of 12...you appreciate honesty and integrity and intelligence and that increasingly unrecognised quality- a self effacing, gentle sense of humour. Anyone with a mental age above 12 will recognise this in Thurston, and be able to appreciate it.

  • if you dont know anything about the work that thurston has in his past (sonic youth) maybe you think this interview is boring.

  • how does he come across as pretentious at all here? He's just having a conversation. It sounds like the most natural conversing I have ever heard in an interview with a famous person.

  • you rule thurston!

  • J is God two...

  • Oh come off it. His band Sonic Youth is probably responsible for most of the 'decent' music you're listening to today.

If you think the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs are 'essence of rock' then look at where they get their shit from ... them and about a ka-jillion other bands since them.

    He's a fucking God.

  • Give Thurston a break.

At his age, you wouldn't expect anyone to be off the wall during an interview.

  • I honestly don't see where you're coming from. What's so pretentious about him?

  • Appropriate username.

  • I think Thurston's just plain awkward in most interviews.

  • I was pouring through my soul

    tring to kill the ghoul

    who through me overboard

as I was sitting on my raft

when I got back on my float

    a wild goat came

I turn him into a coat

as I was cold on my dingy

wishing I was at home playing with my thingy

  • dull as dishwater? the 50s called, they want you back Beaver.

  • It's your alliteration against Moore's talent. Not much of a contest.

  • Alliteration, wow not heard that word for a long time, nice.

However, Thurston Moore is a very boring fucker.

  • watch the year punk broke. hes not really boring there. i dont know what you would say if you saw a j mascis interview, then youd have a point

  • Comment removed

  • Mascis is boring. Moore relishes in telling long drawn out anicdotes about nothing.

I mean what does he actually say in this 6 minutes and 21 seconds? Thats a lot of talking and saying nothing.

  • talking about making a record is normally a pretty boring subject.

  • It can be very interesting. I just find this guy incredibly boring.

  • Trees outside the Academy is a great album. Everyone should hear it :)

  • what a good guy. thurston seriously is one of the coolest players around.

  • fantastic recordings on the life of the group

  • beautiful.

  • Thurston, we love you!

  • you think that is thurston's favourite shirt? :)

  • excellent!!!

  • Trees Outside...is great. It certainly benefitted from Steve and J.

  • awesome solos from J fo real.

  • seriously, does anyone have the tab for that song? even though it's in an alternate tuning and all.

  • hmm...i could probably figure it out but ive been doing it in an alternate tuning...i went through the whole album riffin it out...you should experiment with some alternate tunings to figure it out then go from there to create some of your own...fun stuff..

  • dude, it's not an alternative tunning.

it seems that Thurston wanted to be the more convencional as he could. i'll send to you the tab

  • of course it's detuned. it's thurston moore. do you see what he plays after the intro and right before he starts to sing? the two lowest strings are a fifth apart. the tuning is one he used a lot on murray street and sonic nurse. CGDGCD

  • maybe you're right. but i know how to play on a standard tuning and sounds the same.

  • that's awesome. i've also got it worked out quite nicely with the other tuning. you should try it out. what helped me was playing a lot of songs from sonic nurse in years past. when you play lots of songs by the same artists, you can sort of get into their head. really cool stuff

  • i hope i can get this album at my local cd store.

  • well, you're kinda lucky. at least you leave in USA, i live in Chile and i don't think this is going to reach here. probably i will have to order it by amazon...

  • oh shit you have to get it.

it is seriously one of my favorites of the year....it has the ability to bring tears to my eyes...good good stuff...

  • yeah, i love it too. it proves Thurston Moore can do well in disonant songs as well as in armonic pieces. what an artist!

  • j.mascis/thurston should do an album.

  • does anyone know where I can get the shape is in a trance lyrics? It's wonderful :)

  • What is that acoustic he's playing?

  • @rockermang

Judging by the shape of the headstock, I'm guessing a Martin.

  • Wow! You really get an idea of how accomplished he is when he's playing the acoustic! That sort of gets overshadowed when he's playing with Sonic Youth by the overall presentation of the entire band, if that makes any sense.

  • Overall, as a guitarist, he is pretty impressive. Heck, even the great avant-garde legend Derek Bailey did an album with Thurston!

  • @sydbarrett5 No it doesnt make any sense

  • weird. they use four tet for the intro.

  • Awesome Record

  • I just got the CD. It's so beautiful and pretty. It grows with every play. My girlfriend just got us tickets for the show. I can't wait. Whoohoo!

  • totally agree with ya mate, i'll see you there
