Wait a minute! I thought non-avian dinos went extinct after the KT extinction event -- which would have been 500,000 yrs before the beginning of your excursion. ;-)
Seriously though, very nice vid. I especially like the ending. I'm sorry it took me so long to find it.
My mass extinction event may have killed him every day before he could have woken up. So he would have spent an expansive about of years dying before he could wake.
This is AWESOME...The only problem I have is there is no mention of the K-T extinction event! Your characters would have lived through it, but there was no mention of a meteorite impact, or anything else that might have caused the mass extinction!
Nice idea, but you left out the "good" bit: a rock the size of Everest slamming into the Earth and the following giant earthquake, tsunami, global firestorm, nuclear winter, all the big dinosaurs gone, some of the small fuzzy ones left etc. Must have happened while you were having those "I am a God" issues. :)
Ageing has nothing to do with evolution. You are not evolving. If you have a child, that child will be slightly fifteenth from you. That's it, that's evolution. Differences so small you would never notice them day to day. That's what he is getting at.
I completely understood this. Witnessing slow, gradual changes of a dinosaur's transformation into a bird would be SO GRADUAL you wouldn't see it change. Just like a relative... as the years go by 'they still look the same' and remain being the same person.
Story bugged me. Not for it's overall intent, but just some of the oddities. If every time they were eaten, they woke up the next day and had forgotten about it; how would they ever remember seeing evolution anyway?
Also after 555 million years, would the two of them have evolved into some type of insanely superior humans? Would the birds have evolved beyond our current birds?
I get the joke, but it's the little things that bug me.
@jbourg333 they forgot the moment before they were eaten, not the whole day, a human can't evolve by himself, he needs to have a kid a little different from him, the birds would evolve to just as they are now, since he went back in time. This story is actually pretty consistent.
Unfortunately you did not travel back in time far enough to witness the evolution of birds from dinosaurs, which occurred 165 million years ago, so birds would have already existed, meaning there is not excuse for you to not understand the difference between a bird and dinosaur. Also non-avian dinosaurs would have been extinct before you got there, as the extinction level event that killed them occurred 65.5 million years ago.
The only way I would ever wish for infinite life is to live infinite lives, not just one and forget the previous life after I died. That wouldn't be too bad.
interesting joke. The irony of course is the inclusion of a supernatural genie used to disprove the supernatural... did I say "interesting"? I meant funny as hell.
Great video! You managed to communicate the grand scale of time and evolution in a way that (maybe) even a creationist might understand. The ending was satisfying and poignant. Excellent work.
@pinodewildegekste The point is that if you actually live for that long you wouldn't actually notice any changes. You only notice them when you jump through time.
If you ever look at an old photo you will see it. You will notice how old things look by today's standards, things like clothes and cars. The difference will be obvious but you will not have noticed those changes as you actually grew up.
@pinodewildegekste - "i dont really get the ending and 'message' in this story?"
Technically birds ARE dinosaurs. Birds are simply feathered dinosaurs which have lost some of their dinosaur-like characteristics such as teeth, and tails.
@concretecubes The point is that there are no set "species", "intermediate-species" and such. There is just an extremely long, slow changing, continium of animals.
That was freakin' hilarious, Mr. Phil! :D I was rolling with laughter by the time you got to the part about complaining about the climate change, because you were enjoying freezing to death under the glaciers. Damned hilarious! Thanks!
@Overkillerr I would like to see a TV show about it :D would be awesome in my opinion .. its a good start with the genie and you can make a lot of episodes about each day until they get to our age ... (if they will show one day in an hour and they would publish 1 episode a day event then they will never catch up with us technically :) but we can skip some boring days )
3. 2. Wish to be able to control all atoms and minipulate them at my chooseing like Dr. Manhattan from watchmen except still look like me.
Very well made video. Very good job. It sent shivers down my spine. I just can't imagine what it would be like to live for several hundred million years...

You are an amazing storyteller. Start the video with birds, and at the end the sounds fade in, then the topic shifts. You lead our minds throughout the clip in a nice way so that we form the conlusions at the moment when they happen.
I really love this video. Phil, this is one of your best, and most entertaining. I think if I was going to do the "Hey...want to watch this video?" thing with an undecided or moderate, it's the kind of thing I think would engage them, while conveying a very vital message about Evolution.
If I lived for sixty five million years, I would have traveled to different parts of the world, take notes on the animals and habitar, come back a million years later and see what has changed.
The thing that one would point out is that since you mentioned T-Rex, then of course you didn't seeany birds evolving. The earliest birds were discovered in Europe and china, not the USA lol.

But, since these guys keep dying ad infinitum, if they remembered how, eventually they would have a fear of doing just about everything. *shrug*
Did anyone get the close character similarity to that of Jacob the island protector and the black smoke monster guy from LOST that of the storyteller and his friend.
@matz1576 That it takes a really long time? cause thats the only thing directly about evolution stated in this, that it takes so long that if you were able to watch it you would never notice.
@matz1576 It's an abstract point. He's trying to illustrate that creationists want to understand evolution NOW, in no uncertain terms, and in 20 words or less. That the evolutionary changes cannot and WILL not happen within a single person's observable lifespan. Trust me, he understands it all too well.
@HeyRuka basically, the problem being that when this is stated most creationists think "t-rex to Chicken" not "small feathery dinosaurs to small feathery creatures"
Whenever he or Anthony were eaten or killed, they would wake the next morning perfectly fine. I imagine a rainy day in the Cretaceous wilderness was only a minor annoyance, but when death is that cheap suicide is more like sleeping all day.
@FreeeeS No it's pointing out that birds are descendants of dinosaurs. And thats why they didn't see evolution in the story. Because the changes were so slow they didn't notice them. Much like you don't notice your dog getting bigger from the time it was a puppy to when its full grown because you see it everyday and everyday it seems like it was just the same as it was yesterday. Only in the story this happens on a MASSIVE timescale.
@xynth101088 I remember the first day i got my dog, he was small. and i remember how my dog was yesterday big. I can notice change, just not daily. Either way this may lead to evidence on how Human's may perceive certain situations but does not give evidence towards evolution.
@xynth101088 I remember the first day i got my dog, he was small. and i remember how my dog was yesterday big. I can notice change, just not daily. Either way this may lead to evidence on how Human's may perceive certain situations but does not give evidence towards to how Evolution works; It only beats around the bush... Remotely
@CYC4GOD You are right its not evidence for how evolution works, it just shows how futile it is to try and see it in action. Which creationists try to use to say it doesn't happen, or if they could see it they might accept it.
@xynth101088 That's true, but at the same time, after 3 years you do realize your dog is significantly different from when it was a puppy. It's bigger, and no longer a puppy. This story does not make sense. Just because you don't notice the slow, day-to-day changes in your child doesn't mean when she's 18 and someone says "what a beautiful young woman", that you'd respond, "she's not a woman, she's a baby".
@Erniesduck123 You missed the point. And your example of the woman doesn't really relate considering depending on who is saying and how old they are the 18 year old could be considered a baby and in a sense could be compared to the birds and dinosaurs. Regardless I only mentioned the puppy/dog thing as an example of something on a VERY short scale. Using the same thing on something that is much, much older is on a completely different playing field.
@xynth101088 I didn't miss the point. I pointed out the flaw in your puppy example. You may not notice the change from day 365 to day 366, but one would hope you'd notice a change from day 1 to day 365. I don't understand your comments on my example. An 18-year-old is fundamentally different from a baby. No one with both halves of their brain would honestly believe the 18-year-old is a baby, even if the person is 65 million-years-old.
@Erniesduck123 Yes but when exactly did the change occur from the girl being a baby to a woman? We know that it happened and that is not the point. The point is that you can't pin point it. Just like the pair in the video couldn't pin point when evolution of the dinosaurs took place. That is the point you are missing. That is why they consider the birds to be dinosaurs.
@xynth101088 That's not what he's saying though. It's not that he doesn't know WHEN they stopped being dinosaurs and started being birds, it's that he still think they ARE dinosaurs. Just because I can't pinpoint exactly when my brother stopped being a baby and became a child, doesn't mean I can't recognize he is no longer a baby.
@xynth101088 From an evolutionary point of view the dinosaurs that gave way to birds evolved 165 mya. Being from the future and with birds in the sky long before they got there, in addition to the mass extinction killing all dinosaurs except birds around 65.5 mya, there is no excuse for him recognizing a boat, but not a seagull. I get what you're saying, birds are part of the clade that includes the bipedal dinosaurs, but based on when he arrived, the evolution would have taken place already
As always loved the ending few seconds.

DasKrabbe 8 months ago
@matz1576 That it takes a really long time? cause thats the only thing directly about evolution stated in this, that it takes so long that if you were able to watch it you would never notice.
deathman1021 8 months ago
@matz1576 It's an abstract point. He's trying to illustrate that creationists want to understand evolution NOW, in no uncertain terms, and in 20 words or less. That the evolutionary changes cannot and WILL not happen within a single person's observable lifespan. Trust me, he understands it all too well.

@TheSkunkCat Infinite Popo's = DO NOT WANT! Also, would be pretty epic if they all fight each other for ultimate authority.

@FHomeBrew It's amazing how people think the same. I think I thought of the infinite wishes when I was about 6.

So they never noticed the change from dinosaurs to birds because it was so gradual, is that what the last line implies?
HeyRuka 9 months ago
@HeyRuka basically, the problem being that when this is stated most creationists think "t-rex to Chicken" not "small feathery dinosaurs to small feathery creatures"
deathman1021 9 months ago
@deathman1021 Oh, right. Makes more sense now. Thanks for clarifying :)

Whenever he or Anthony were eaten or killed, they would wake the next morning perfectly fine. I imagine a rainy day in the Cretaceous wilderness was only a minor annoyance, but when death is that cheap suicide is more like sleeping all day.

were the birds really dinos is this an alternate time line? or something
FreeeeS 9 months ago
@FreeeeS No it's pointing out that birds are descendants of dinosaurs. And thats why they didn't see evolution in the story. Because the changes were so slow they didn't notice them. Much like you don't notice your dog getting bigger from the time it was a puppy to when its full grown because you see it everyday and everyday it seems like it was just the same as it was yesterday. Only in the story this happens on a MASSIVE timescale.
xynth101088 9 months ago 92
@xynth101088 I remember the first day i got my dog, he was small. and i remember how my dog was yesterday big. I can notice change, just not daily. Either way this may lead to evidence on how Human's may perceive certain situations but does not give evidence towards evolution.

CYC4GOD 9 months ago
@CYC4GOD You are right its not evidence for how evolution works, it just shows how futile it is to try and see it in action. Which creationists try to use to say it doesn't happen, or if they could see it they might accept it.
xynth101088 9 months ago 5
@xynth101088 That's true, but at the same time, after 3 years you do realize your dog is significantly different from when it was a puppy. It's bigger, and no longer a puppy. This story does not make sense. Just because you don't notice the slow, day-to-day changes in your child doesn't mean when she's 18 and someone says "what a beautiful young woman", that you'd respond, "she's not a woman, she's a baby".
Erniesduck123 4 months ago
@Erniesduck123 You missed the point. And your example of the woman doesn't really relate considering depending on who is saying and how old they are the 18 year old could be considered a baby and in a sense could be compared to the birds and dinosaurs. Regardless I only mentioned the puppy/dog thing as an example of something on a VERY short scale. Using the same thing on something that is much, much older is on a completely different playing field.
xynth101088 4 months ago
@xynth101088 I didn't miss the point. I pointed out the flaw in your puppy example. You may not notice the change from day 365 to day 366, but one would hope you'd notice a change from day 1 to day 365. I don't understand your comments on my example. An 18-year-old is fundamentally different from a baby. No one with both halves of their brain would honestly believe the 18-year-old is a baby, even if the person is 65 million-years-old.
Erniesduck123 4 months ago
@Erniesduck123 Yes but when exactly did the change occur from the girl being a baby to a woman? We know that it happened and that is not the point. The point is that you can't pin point it. Just like the pair in the video couldn't pin point when evolution of the dinosaurs took place. That is the point you are missing. That is why they consider the birds to be dinosaurs.
xynth101088 4 months ago
@xynth101088 That's not what he's saying though. It's not that he doesn't know WHEN they stopped being dinosaurs and started being birds, it's that he still think they ARE dinosaurs. Just because I can't pinpoint exactly when my brother stopped being a baby and became a child, doesn't mean I can't recognize he is no longer a baby.
Erniesduck123 4 months ago
@Erniesduck123 From an evolutionary point of view the birds are dinosaurs.
xynth101088 4 months ago
@xynth101088 From an evolutionary point of view the dinosaurs that gave way to birds evolved 165 mya. Being from the future and with birds in the sky long before they got there, in addition to the mass extinction killing all dinosaurs except birds around 65.5 mya, there is no excuse for him recognizing a boat, but not a seagull. I get what you're saying, birds are part of the clade that includes the bipedal dinosaurs, but based on when he arrived, the evolution would have taken place already
