I haven't seen the movie but a guy at work was talking about it yesterday. The main point is the guy knows he can't take much more torture before he gives away the location of his son. He figures he's a dead man anyway (signified by the last cigarette) so he tricks the Sicilian into killing him quickly by insulting him. The real thing here is the man died for his son and made the Sicilian angry enough to kill him.
