I like how they use new characters in each game. They couldn't create new personalities, plots, or even combat styles if they stayed in the same universe with the same characters, since they would be tied down by pre-developed characters and already fleshed out plots. Plus, the characters at the end of each game should theoretically (i'm looking at YOU ToS2) be some of the strongest people in their world, so it wouldn't be as fun playing as them rather than starting as new characters.

supposedly, there are two seperate universes, phantasia (ToSymphonia, ToS2, and ToPhantasia, maybe others) and i think destinia, i haven't played those ones. outside of those there are non-canon stories not made by namco tales. i think vesperia might be one of those, but i can't remember.

and i hear you about 200 hours of gameplay. i play through ToS1 two and half times, and i still don't have a 100% file. so annoying.

Supposedly all the games are set in different universes unless they're meant to be prequels/sequels of another game. Therefore they'd be in the same universe. Other than that, there is really no real timeline, just like The Legend of Zelda.

It'd be awesome if there was, but you can never tell for sure.

All i know is that Phantasia, Symphonia, and (obviously) Symphonia 2 take place in the same universe. The only other Tales game (regretably) I've played is Vesperia. The rest of the games are on systems that I don't have access to. So I don't know anything about their stories.
