Apparently, the game was originally supposed to be in stereoscopic 3D, but the feature was ultimately scrapped due to 3D TVs not being mainstream or commercially viable back then. The game actually has the coding in it for it to run in 3D, but for the Gamecube to properly do it would have required Nintendo to make a module about twice the cost of the system itself. However, one could possibly display it in 3D via an emulator on a compatible screen.

I would love to see what happens to Luigi just before the game over screen. I didn't get scared when I saw that screen on Zombie Luigi. It's depressing. His face looks swollen and his eyes have bags under them and are missing. Seems like it's a fun game to play if you're into creepy games :)

Hey! That whole time before game over thing is originally from Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask where after 3 game days, a cutscene would play, showing the moon crashing into earth, killing everyone and Link.
I heard there were also several planned bosses. You can notice -- in Melody's room, pictures of two ghosts, both carrying instruments -- that were supposedly supposed to be in that room, or at least take Melody's place.
Another was a hunter who was supposed to appear in the safari room, but he was taken out before even being given an image
@coleplots10 they acctualy removed 3 bosses! the killer austrailian for being to scary, and 2 in the music room with the piano player girl, there were 2 who didn't quite make it into the game, but they did get pictures on the wall of that room! one was a saxophone player and the other was a trumpet player! but the piano girl won.
I assume that's why the final game was so relatively short, considering it was originally planned to have a countdown, reminiscent of Majora's Mask. Of course, you can't control time in Luigi's Mansion, so that's the obvious major difference.
I remember that when I was a kid, before I actually played the game, I always wondered if Luigi himself became a ghost when he died. In this old "Game Over" screen, it looks to me like the ghosts possessed his corpse.

i heard that there was an unused boss ghost in the safari room(which ALSO looked diffrent, check super mario wiki and look up luigis mansion beta) that was a safari like dude who used a rifle to shoot luigi. he wanted luigis head to go on the wall with the animals and was removed for that reason.

@maskmario10 same here.i'm glad they removed that.this game was originally planted to be T rated.the reasons are the scares.there was gonna be a boss ghost in the safari room who said he was gonna mount luigi's head on the wall along with the animal heads.his attack was shooting with his gun.he had a western cowboy getup on.there was also the beta enemy best known as the "Scare the crap outta ya ghost"if it pops up behind luigi he loses 50 hp and crawls on the floor a little after being scared.
If you play the beta game in the middle of a stormy night in a dark room where everyone but you is sleeping, MAYBE the game over would be kinda scary.

when this final release came out when i was 11 yrs old i thought i was scary and spooky as it is, i'd probably couldn't sleep and or play this game during the day time if the beta stayed.
i guess nintendo toned it down so kids such as i back then could play it without too much fear to the point of not playing it or getting parents upset or something.
What I think happened to make that game over- Luigi has failed to save Mario. A ghost is auctioning souls. Luigi sells his soul to the ghost, and Luigi purchases the Exorcist Soul.
Oh i remembered something! In testing the game they were going to make it like You have to save mario in BLAH BLAH time. or Luigi gets possed from being in there too long [i think]
The beta health bar seems to keep track of how fast your heart beat is! This game was a horror game in beta but nintendo made it a lil more kid friendly! If they were to switch luigi with another someone else nintendo would make up like: Spacker the ghost hunter, they would have kept the beta version!
In the Origional Beta, you origionally 24 hours of save time to find mario before you get a game over. If it becomes a game over, you have to restart the WHOLE GAME. they took it out because of how overwhelmingly Hard it would be. The gameboy horror timer went up to 24 hours too, supposedly

and they got rid of that poping out gohst at 1:53
so prety much the final version is a less scary version of the beta, so the kids wouldnt get scared.

@maskmario10 same here.i'm glad they removed that.this game was originally planted to be T rated.the reasons are the scares.there was gonna be a boss ghost in the safari room who said he was gonna mount luigi's head on the wall along with the animal heads.his attack was shooting with his gun.he had a western cowboy getup on.there was also the beta enemy best known as the "Scare the crap outta ya ghost"if it pops up behind luigi he loses 50 hp and crawls on the floor a little after being scared.

he says he will kill you, and mount your head on the wall as his trophie. he was in the safari room. personally, the jaguar heads creeped me the f**k out.

another thing i just found out apperintly what people say is that for the game over when luigi is killed in the game he dies and turns into a zombie and in the end with rankings instead of it being like the final version where like rank a b c d style
its a difrint picture of him showing how happy he is depending on his money like alot hes very happy hardly any he looks like he does in the game over and in between hes just happy

k well 2 things about the game over
1 it HAD TO be not finished or badly done if its game over with time running out and mansion disapearing cause if so then the mansion im sure wouldnt be in the gameover if you look it shows the lights and the mansion then luigi blocks it
2 if it was like that where the time ran out and it disapeared with mario im sure the mansion would be gone and it would be abit better done

Yeah, i got this for christmas 2001 gamecube w/ luigi's mansion i was about 5 years old, if i saw that beta game over it would screw up my childhood!

when this final release came out when i was 11 yrs old i thought i was scary and spooky as it is, i'd probably couldn't sleep and or play this game during the day time if the beta stayed.
i guess nintendo toned it down so kids such as i back then could play it without too much fear to the point of not playing it or getting parents upset or something.

Here's my theory about the game over:
King Boo is like a cat, he likes to play with his pray, like a cat.
Mario has only 24 hours before he starves, trapped in a painting, with no edible material.
This might connect the picture found where Luigi is crying and leaving a flower at a grave in the outdoor Graveyard.
Maybe Gallery Ghosts had varying HPs.

What I think happened to make that game over- Luigi has failed to save Mario. A ghost is auctioning souls. Luigi sells his soul to the ghost, and Luigi purchases the Exorcist Soul.

The beta health bar seems to keep track of how fast your heart beat is! This game was a horror game in beta but nintendo made it a lil more kid friendly! If they were to switch luigi with another someone else nintendo would make up like: Spacker the ghost hunter, they would have kept the beta version!

In the Origional Beta, you origionally 24 hours of save time to find mario before you get a game over. If it becomes a game over, you have to restart the WHOLE GAME. they took it out because of how overwhelmingly Hard it would be. The gameboy horror timer went up to 24 hours too, supposedly
