If you dragged and dropped the files into the minecraft.jar, that can be more complicated and has a greater risk of error. If you'd like, I can give you a link to the HD texture pack patcher. Also, is the game showing a bluescreen with error text in the middle, or does it just go black? I can help you more if you need it.
