In theory, the butterfly fin was meant to have a similar effect to a three-fin thruster layout, but using a single fin-box. In practice, it didn't work. However it did give a large surface area (to prevent side-slip) without as deep as some fins. That was good at Dee Why point, as there's a few shallow rocks in the lineup at low tide.
