  • Interesting.

  • I was playing DOOM 3 ROE and a Z-sec fired at an imp after that the imp started to attack the Z-sec xD

  • What it do... bite it's tongue until it bled out?

  • A Cacodemon's attacks do not have any effect on itself, so how could it kill itself like that which is claimed in this video? That makes no sense to me.

  • @Yonathan155 Cacodemon fireballs cannot harm Cacodemons, but Cacodemons have a melee attack and will bite you if you get close. That's what's happening here.

  • @fragglet So, a Cacodemon has melee attacks and those attacks can cause harm to itself? I have never seen a Cacodemon use a melee attack before.

  • @Yonathan155 You probably never noticed it, because the animation for a Cacodemon's melee attack is identical to the animation it makes when it launches a fireball. Turn on god mode and stand directly in front of a Cacodemon. They'll make a biting motion but you won't see any fireball appear - that's a melee attack.

  • @fragglet I could not find that link to the barrel suicide phenomenon that you mentioned in your video!

  • @Yonathan155 The Doom wiki link in the video description.

  • "Have you ever seen an ant eat its own head?"

    "No."

    "I have... HAHAHAHA!!!!"

  • I feel sorry for cacmon

  • Emo Cacodemon...next there will be Emo Cyberdemon

  • No, Cacodemon! You have so much to live for!!!

  • This video will be very useful in my study of Cacodemons and Doom's creatures behaviour. Thanks!

  • @IncognitaEX wow you really think its worth studying? there are 4 behaviors to every monster:

idle: doesn't move, doesn't attack (switches to active/engaging if a target walks into line of sight)

active: moves randomly to a nearby spot

engaging: attacks target, walks a bit, attacks target again (switches to active if target gets out of line of sight)

retaliate: if attacked, switch target to attacker until attacker dies or goes off the line of sight)

  • What happened is, in this version of Doom, if a monster were to be hurt by a barrel explosion, it would retaliate against whoever destroyed the barrel. In this case, the Cacodemon did just that. Now, Doom checks for this situation and it doesn't happen anymore.

  • I hate the Cacodemon because they are the most difficult/common enemy so they are a pain in the ass. So watching this video of a Cacodemon hurting it self and the killing it self makes me laugh. Fantastic!

  • Now that's something I never thought I'd see.

A Cacodemon eating its own face.

  • neat.

  • that pretty interesting, had no idea they could do that

  • I enjoy many other FPS a great deal...

but let's face it, Doom is clearly the best.

  • Awesome video!

  • Cacod'EMO'n anyone?

  • @pmanderson har har har

  • what is that messge in the end is it reall =p

  • @muzimuzi It's the ENDOOM screen, the text you see when you quit to DOS...

  • @fragglet yea i do remember it but never knew what it said as i didnt know english back then so its content is funny =p

  • Bleed out?

  • he just have enought off this all.....

  • The sound of the cacodemon when it dies was the only one that made me sad.... Just sounds cruel. :(

  • @Admiral1428 there's always the Doom 64 sound.

"uhhhhrrrrmmh..... :( " poor floating berry monsters with two anuses.

  • Man I miss the old MIDI music days. For some reason it was far more engrossing and atmospheric than today's billion budget games.

  • Ya I have played that map for like 20 times. Theres NO lost souls near that cacodemon!

  • wierd things can happen in this game. just the other day i had two pinky demons fight each other cause one bit the other, and once i actually gibbed a former human with the chainsaw, which i had never seen before

  • Cacodemons are so adorable. Ones that commit suicide are just plainly emo, though. Emo is not adorable to say the least :P

  • He's some how biting himself look closely.

  • @nargarothfreak "i know more of doom than every one "

    ... incorrect.

"after the release of doom version 1.1 is the bug fixt [sic]"

Yes, I know. That's why it says so in the video title. It's still historically interesting, though. Looks like you missed the entire point of the video.

  • @nargarothfreak the only person who knows more about doom than anyone is John Carmack and that's becasue he made the damn game's code.

  • @BillyCauseyjr

That can be true but i think

    John Romero

    Sandy Petersen

    Tom Hall

they no the moste of it they are the makers of doom!

    Cheers!

  • @nargarothfreak I was talking more from a technical standpoint but yeah put together they are doom. (except american mcgee... he made two levels and then acted like he was important.)

  • @nargarothfreak first off i played doom since it came out and if you know one thing more than me thats impossible, but i know more than you especially on spelling you retard, wtf is fixt?

  • Possibly the most emotionally disturbed monster I've ever seen in DOOM... and I once saw a Cyberdemon run off and hide in a corner because of an infighting/clipping glitch.

  • it work for any enemy as long as they have enough health

  • He probably committed suicide because he saw the Doom Marine standing there and knew that he was...DOOMED. :>

But on a serious note, barrel suicide is real, and it happens because of the same AI programming that causes monster infighting.

  • There cannot be lost soul inside the wall ... because if is there ... she(or he) cant move and attacking doest not damage... (i tryied it on my own .wad) ... this is impossible.

  • Cacodemon; --crap, there he is, better kill myself--

  • The Caco "suicide phenomenon" is a trick I've been using countless times when playing Doom on my Playstation.

  • Honestly, I don't know how you could think that there is a lost soul attacknig the cacodemon through the wall. As you said, the lost souls are nowhere near the cacodemon room. All you have to do to prove that to yourself is examine the map from an aerial perspective in an editor, such as Doom Builder.

  • nice MISS with the shotgun at 0:43 ;)

  • put it this way, CACODEMONS ARE RETARTED

  • The barrel suicide phenomenon. XD I like this. :)

  • u could be a scientist about it, n kill every lost soul before doing the emo-cacodemon trick, if he's still emo, that would shut everyone up

  • @DestinyQx Firstly, I didn't make this demo, I only recorded it to a video and uploaded it. Secondly, there isn't a need to be "scientific" because I have the source code, I understand how it works, and it's possible to see on the map that the lost souls seen earlier in the video are nowhere near the room where the Cacodemon kills itself.

  • @fragglet

Yeah, anyone with as little as some scripting knowledge should understand where this problem hails from(No checking owner-flag on the projectile before retaliating.).

Still a kewl glitch though.. i though i knew most thing about doom, apparently not. :)

  • @notuern "hails" from?

  • @NotNotOminous

Meant to use the word "originates", but couldnt remember the correct term at the time. ;)

  • Very funny. It's like he's killing himself on the wall.

  • SUPER COOL

  • It had too much to live for...

  • Poor cacodemon. :(

  • funny as hell, literaly

  • Is the caco like trying to bite himself?

  • I have never seen a cacodemon commit suicide. lol

  • WTF!

  • wow thats funny :D

  • "If you haven't payed for DOOM, you are playing illegally. This means you owe us money. Of course, a guy like you probably owes a lot of people money--your friends, maybe even your parents. Stop being a freeloader and register DOOM."

    lolz

  • I love the "you're going to hell" remark in the DOOM 2 endoom screen!

  • @buckie92

That's hilarious! Where did you see that?

  • @phobos001 Its like the very last second of the video.

  • wow never knew any of this!!!!!!!! and knowing is have the battle!!!!!

  • cacod EMO n

hehhehe i cant resist sorry :P

nice video, i still play a lot this game. Scariest and funniest game of ever. i bought the game in psn, hehe. I will try to beat in nightmare, i guess it almost impossible with pads =p

    cya

  • Marine:I hate you CacoDemon

    CacoDemon:Leave me alone

    Marine:KILL YOURSELF

    CacoDemon:*sniff sniff* FINE!!!! Lol

  • It's much more interesting when this happens to enemies like the Spider Mastermind who exclusively have hitscan weapons.

Then they just shoot around aimlessly, causing infighting and you can go hide somewhere and save some ammo.

  • at first view i thought the cocodeamon would blow the barrel and kill himself but this was more LOL...0_o!

  • Well ain't that something

  • Wow, that's something lol

  • Impressive

  • It'd be really cool to bring this bug back as a toggleable feature in ZDoom.

  • Demons understand that they failed to eliminate mankind and commit suicide.

  • lol the rule if another demon attacks another it attacks that demon until it dies the cacodemon hurts itself so it can't help it and attacks or somehow hurts itself

  • wow..... DOS

  • Even if there was a lost soul in the wall they could never fight each other so yeah this is pretty suicide.

  • 0:57 - ouch... lol

  • lol talk about some trauma issues

  • holy shit, and i tough zombies where stupid

  • Crap! emo monsters!

  • i hate it when lost Souls (becuase of the Pain Elementals) get launched INTO the walls, so you cant kill them, no 100% kill :(

  • I've had that happen a lot on the PSX DOOM. I thought it was nice because it wouldn't be able to do crap to me.

  • lost souls don't count towards the 100%

  • Lost souls from Pain elementals doesnt count towards kill recount. Although in Psx version the lost souls can get you above the 100%.

But anyway the original Ultimate doom for pc doesnt have pain elementals except for the psx version is all i know.

  • this is because of some code in the original doom version 1.1 where the barrel explosion makes the caco thinks it attacked itself already and attacks itself til death does it part LOL

  • So...Cacodemons are stupid?

  • u cud say so generally speaking but here it was purely a line of code which was written to register barrel damage. The cacodemon attacked the barrel tryin to get the player, barrel explodes, code registers cacodemon as attacking itself and the monster infighting with ones self begins.

  • That is quite possibly the ONLY thing I have not seen in Doom. I have witnessed 3 imps take down a Baron of Hell once.

  • You won't see it unless you're playing a very old version.

  • True

  • Was the Baron at full hp? O_o

  • Ah well, I did hit it with a rocket or two....it was still awesome though.

  • nice glitch Imagine if you could do this to cyberdemons it would save a lot of trouble.

it makes you wonder how this was discovered in the first place though.

  • I wonder what a round ball can bite out of itself anyway? Death by self-inflicted tongue biting...ouch.

  • lol, ive seen a pinky demon bite a barrel, and kill itself once.

  • Is there anywhere where I can get Doom 1.0 (I already own the Ultimate Doom)?

  • Doom 1.0 only existed as shareware; you can download it from the idgames repository. The first registered version was v1.1; you can download a downgrade patch named downgrd.zip that downgrades Ultimate Doom to v1.1 registered.

    Hope this helps!

  • Technically the share ware is doom 0.99

  • Sort of. The startup screen says 0.99 but the installer is clearly labeled as "doom1_0", and the version that followed it was v1.1. So I call it 1.0.

  • Hahaha, AWESOME :D

It that a glitch, or I can like, do it whenever I want?

    5/5

  • Read how it's done maybe -_- that effect now doesn't exist... but it can be used to make two barons of hell attack each other (get one baron to explode a barrel damaging a second one).

  • Yeah, but I meant... It can't be by purpose he is killing himself, it must be a glitch.

  • Yes, it is a bug, but it was only in very early versions of Doom.

  • Simon, I uploaded a video response. Check it out.

  • Very nice. Now if anyone thinks that it's still a lost soul inside the wall I can just redirect them to your video. Thanks :-)

  • Why are cacodemons identified with DOOM more than any other monster? Maybe that's not true at all, but that's the impression I got when I first got into it.

Is it simply because they're the most unique enemy?

  • They have a distinctive, memorable appearance. They also appear on the Doom I title screen.

  • Ah the screen at the very last moment brings back such memories when I played Doom 1.1 on win95, before that I had the shareware version on two floppy disks.

  • Thats nice!

Seems that "the_attacker" pointer inside "monster" struct was set to "this" by default(and "this" means, object itself).

So if something attacks and gets destroyed in the process, "the_attacker" var does not get updated.

    Monster starts attacking itself.

Carmack didnt want to use "void" instead or do a runtime check :)

    Nice bug! :)

  • No, that's not what happens at all.

Each monster has a "target" pointer. If you attack a monster, the monster's "target" pointer gets set to your player. Similarly if a monster gets damaged by another monster, the "target" is set to the monster who attacked. This is how infighting works.

  • The way that damage is tracked works across barrel explosions. eg. If you damage a monster by blowing up a barrel, it knows you did it and will attack you the same as if you shot it. And if a monster hurts another monster by blowing up a barrel, the injured monster will attack the monster that did it.

However, with barrel explosions it's possible for a monster to injure itself. There was no check for this condition in the early versions; hence what happens here.

  • Thanks for explanation! :)

  • That's fuckin' neat. :D

  • the cacodemon did kill itself! it died away from the wall so a lost soul couldn't have done it

  • "itz tha lost sole doing it!!! eye tryed it and the cockodemon still uh-tact meee!!"

It's funny how stupid some people are.

  • Hmm... It's very interesting, because you can hear the sound of the Lost Soul doing its thrusting flying attack, just at the moment that the Cacodemon dies. I'm going to have to go with that idea that the Lost Souls trapped in the wall and kills it lol

  • No, you're wrong. How many times do I have to explain this? Jesus Christ you people are dumb.

  • Holy crap, does this also go for the other monters or is it only the caco?

  • It's also possible to trick Barons into doing the same thing.

  • I think I'm doing something wrong, the caco and baron still attacked me.

  • It only works in Doom 1.1 and earlier.

  • Wow I never saw this before and I've been playing doom since it came out. I still play it to this day.

Welp, I'm going to go fire up doom and try to make a caco kill itself. :D

  • Ok, but it only works in v1.1 and earlier.

  • LOL poor cacodemon!!!

  • Doom had the most interesting engine. A very simple engine but with so many anomalies and interesting stuff in it.

  • Yep, and you don't even know the half of it.

  • Wow, i knew that doom monsters attacked each other under certain circumstances, but attacking them selves is awesome, i guess its one those funky logic bugs.( im probally wrong)

  • No, you are right :)

  • Well... Call the Ghostbusters!!

  • In the PlayStation of Final Doom, I have made the Cacodemon kill itself in "Canyon", where there are two barrels. He hurts himself, and flies up killing himself and watching him fall as he kills himself. It is a lot of fun to watch.

  • I wish all the demons would do that to themselves, it's entertaining to watch.

  • So...did he bite his lip until he died? Or did he swallow fireballs?

  • Lol same thing i want to kno.

  • Well, of those two choices, it's most accurate to say that he bit his lip until he died.

  • thats good lol die cacodemon u sob

  • Thanks for recording this on YouTube, Simon. Did you record any of the others? - Baron infighting on E1M8 - Player stuck behind door in E2M4 in v1.?? - Baron stuck in door on E2M4 - Tutti frutti door on E2M7 (Spawning Vats was THE first episode!!!) - ArchVile anti-gravity demo (not a bug, really) - Voodoo Doll (I think I used MAP02) - E2M8 rocket-proof switch - everyone knows this one - MAP16 Demon wakeup infinite loop (think it required -fast or nightmare) I've forgotten the rest... Cheers!
  • Ladies and Gentlemen, the legendary Lee Killough!

Yes indeed, there are a load of other LMPs that you made demonstrating interesting technical things, on John Romero's site. I'll try to find the time to convert them and upload :-)

  • Kids, dont do drugs.

Thats the reason for stupid death with barrel.

  • I guess it must have sucked badly to be a demon like that.

  • I discoverd that on Heretic, it too identically happens the same way, since it uses doom engine i figure it could happend on doom, now i see is true.

  • Interesting. It was fixed in Doom, but Heretic is derived from an older version of the Doom source base.

  • Fucking amazing. "The cacodemon can consume x20 its size, and x30 its own weight. It preys upon corner walkers... The Imps are its prime bait, it is essentially found near the amazonian forest." lol... Thats what one of my friends said about this. But yea, i find this amazing o.o

  • 1:05 ive had cases where the lost sould got stuck inside the walls and i hear this demon sound even after i killed all the enemies but if i go inside the wall with the no clipping cheat i find that lost soul

  • Yes, that can happen. It is not what has happened in this video.

  • I know, im just saying that happened to me when i was playing. and why cant people just read the other comments that r posted instead of asking the same questions geez, Fragglet i know how you feel i have a vid of the duke 3d hi res pack on here and ppl kept asking how do i do this? how do i do that? over and over again man its annoying. finally i just shut off the comments to that vid. i dont even have that hires pack installed anymore b/c it runs like shit on my computer

  • Yeah it's annoying how some videos act as magnets for people asking annoying questions. I added the annotations to this video because I was tired of explaining that it's not a demon inside the wall. I have another video of the game "JFK Reloaded" that I closed the comments for because I was tired of deleting comments. One woman even spent hours searching for my email address so she could send me a shitty email.

  • Hahahaha thats fucked up, man the things people do for a bit of attention. thats why i only give mine out only to ppl i trust and the i know wont send me any junk. I once shut off the comments to my big ass caterpillar video b/c ppl kept saying it looked like a crawling penis or something but since it was my most viewed video i turned em back on, man i should sell that vid to animal planet or something, sorry im rambling on lol my bad.

  • interesting. This may be the first time such behavior has been observed from the great cacodemon. There is potentially much we can learn about our own nature from watching the cacodemon.

  • What?

  • He had every right to be angry.

  • I found the Cacodemon always a bit gay. His eye, blinking, when you hit him. trying to escape

  • i wouldnt have imagined that.. he cant even hang himself, he's forced to hit the walls to death. that s very sad

  • poor cacodemon

  • EMO caco

  • It seems as though there was a lost soul attacking it from outside of the wall

  • No, you are wrong. Read the earlier comments.

  • And if it is a zombie that injured imself he will start shooting blindely possibly resulting in monster infighting

  • That's a bug in Doom 1.1: if 1 enemies makes a barrel explode the enemie that sufferd the damage will retaliate but if it was the enemie that hurted imself the enemie will use is melle attack against himself

  • Haha! Yeah, pesky bugs in older versions of the original Doom. But it sure makes for entertaining situations! Watching a Cacodemon commit Hara-Kiri is sure to cheer you up if you're feeling down. :D

Another great video from fragglet. Five stars. ;)

  • Unless the monster was attacking wall, then i have no idea how that guy killed itself LOL

  • It was attacking itself.

  • why and how?

  • Read the earlier comments. I've explained about 1,000 times already.

  • barrel suicide: a bug in doom v1.1 that caused monsters to get hurt by barrels they made explode themselves to hurt themselves until they die, hence the barrel suicide name.

normally, when you shoot a barrel and it explodes and hurt a monster, the monster will attack you because you blew up the barrel, but when a monster blew up a barrel, it started hurting itself because it was the one that blew up the barrel.

it was fixed in later versions.

  • No. You are wrong. Read through the earlier comments.

  • Only rockets would work on one side of the wall in order to cause harm to an opposing enemy on the other side of that wall (due to the devastating explosion). So, having said that, not just would bullets not work, not even the BFG 9000 would work. It's true because I've played all the classic DOOM games for years! ...And YES, I've tested each and every weapon! Trust me when I say this. If not, see for yourself...

  • Yes, it's a bug. Read the earlier comments where I've already explained it, or the Doom wiki article linked to in the video description that gives a detailed technical explanation.

  • will do

  • wtf?!?!

  • So since projectile weapons don't hurt monsters of the same time, and most of such monsters have a close range attack... even though for the case of the Caco it is not that obvious, I wander if that was intentially added by iD to encourage monster v monster attacks or simply to make the more monster like. I suppose if two cyberdemons started fighting due to barrel explosions they would never kill each other. However, the arch-vile attack apparently is not "projectile" becase it can hurt itself?
