9 is used to identify the gate in question, rather than dial to it's location.
This system allows you to not only dial vast distances, but also to a moving gate.
However, the massive subspace shockwave required to do such a thing takes ENORMOUS amounts of power, thus, it isn't really practical unless dialing to somewhere like Destiny. (Far away AND moving)
@smatteringofapplause Yeah, the Destiny (and possible other ships) Stargate has a 9-chevron address, due to the fact that it is zipping around the universe near-constantly! However, the amount of power required is still related to how far away it is...if it were, say, 10 million lightyears away (which is pretty pisspoor compared to how long it's been going for) you would most likely only need a ZPM. Eventually, there will be NO way to reach Destiny, not even those funky Icarus-planets!
@MorganOfTheAncients Well, in my opinion, it is most likely a non-coordinate-based system. Having a base-38 8-digit code to identify a location that far away precise enough is ludicrous. The more likely option is that is sends out a VERY powerful subspace pulse, passing by each gate in turn, sending out the 'name' of the gate it's trying to contact. Thus, it keeps spreading outward until it finds the gate, then makes a connection using a custom algorithm specifically for that purpose.
@smatteringofapplause Interesting theory, and I believe something similar. It's like this:
Somebody dials the Destiny, so the Stargates send a message through subspace along Destiny's path, asking all the Stargates 'Have you fellas seen Destiny?' The Stargates would reply 'Nah, I last heard she was in Pegasus.' So the message would continue on. Eventually, one Stargate would say sometihng like this 'I'm here! You need to connect with me!'. It establishes a connection, and people go through.
Except in the case of such a vast distance, it's not worth the power of having each gate that ISN'T Destiny to reply. (Plus, in theory you could dial to other gates besides Destiny as long as they were set up with an 8-digit code [not counting point of origin])
@smatteringofapplause But Destiny's code DIDN'T have the PoO, it was a special set of symbols. A countermeasure put in place so only certain Stargates/DHDs could dial in, or anywhere if you know enough about the Stargates to input one symbol even though it's not on the dialling device...
@MorganOfTheAncients Well I think it still was a point of origin just to lock in the wormhole. (Not that it needs one if it functions like we're saying) But for whatever reason, the Ancients wanted it to only be possible for you to dial from Earth but is was a poor attempt due to the fact that at that distance, being off by a small portion of a galaxy's width is not enough to make the wormhole disconnect.
@smatteringofapplause Actually, the PoO used in the code wasn't actually Earth's PoO. The real PoO for any planet is the one on the original Stargate. That would mean that the Antarctic Stargate's PoO is the proper PoO. That is the one they should have used as the part of the code required to dial Earth.
@MorganOfTheAncients Well, they represent the same location, currently so the only real difference is the shape! Keep in mind that a point of origin can easily change via the correlative update should the gate be moved.
@MorganOfTheAncients Perhaps, but the likelihood of that particular gate having been on a planet suitable for a 9-chevron dial (or just important to the Ancients) is literally astronomical.
@smatteringofapplause Keeping in mind that Destiny was intended to have been boarded millions of years ago! Back then, you wouldn't have needed a naquadria-core planet, just a ZPM (or equivalent)...
you should slow down the spinning a little bit, one, it would make it cooler, and two, it would reduce or stop the shaking every time it spins. But other then that, its an awsome stargate. =D
lol i want this for my star wars base lol, star wars fighting star trek with a stargate, and can some1 go grease up chevron 7 that dang thing won't engauge, also you shoulda (if possible) made the chevron on the top go down and back up
Hi, I used an nxt brick and ran 2 motors off it. Each motor is connescted to a wheel and tyre and the inner ring sits on it. The outer ring is quite heavy and that's why it jumps around a bit. Can't be bothered fixing it though!!!!!
I have a lego brick thats makes light it would be cool if we put it on your.
