I heard this on the radio in Holland in 1977 ,loved it recorded it on tape but only half of it ,never knew who it was still have the tape.thought it was from new orleans or something.anyway 36 years later i click on it and heaven behold here it is .thank you !
@DocHolliday1881 I wouldn't want to argue with someone using your handle but for me this soft reggae rhythm makes the lyrics even more poignant than the versions that you mention. It is beautifully played and as Picasso said, 'If there were only one truth, you couldn't paint a hundred canvases on the same theme.
@MultiJaylea Errr....so far as I know, Flaco is still very much with us. At least Wikipedia and the "Dead or Alive" site both list him among the living at 72 years of age.
This old favorite really comes across so wonderful with Cooder. I need to go to some old beer joint, have a dozen cold olds and cry into each and every empty bottle
@TheRunner75 No it is on the SirShamblingdotcom website. He has the flip by Lomax only, on YT, for some unknown reason. It's not in the same league, though, IMO.
hat a wonderful young that grew to be such a beautiful legacy to the music world--he has accomplished many wonderful things---including his " Buena Vista " endeavor that was magnificent!!
Oh boy...great, wonderful, magnificent. Thank you mbroders for this and many other superb Ry Cooder posts.
Bobby King and Terry Evans made an excellent album of their own in the early eighties(?) which I used to own- now I can't even remember what it was called... Any idea? Or maybe even a post..he asked hopefully..

Yeah, my mistake,,i read an article somewhere about Doug Sahm and the Texas Tornados which said Flaco had died .I`m glad it was wrong.

The beat doesn't go with the theme of the song. Jim Reeves and Elvis did better versions.

It's so bad even I'm offended for Jim. It's like a horrible Jimmy Buffet wannabe.

Flaco is awesome! BTW, who's that singing backup? I used to know his name but forgot.

That's Bobby King - long time backup singer with Ry Cooder - check out his performance of "Chain Gang" (watch?v=dqW3zGeeIUU) - awesome!
