  • I heard this on the radio in Holland in 1977 ,loved it recorded it on tape but only half of it ,never knew who it was still have the tape.thought it was from new orleans or something.anyway 36 years later i click on it and heaven behold here it is .thank you !

  • Yeah, my mistake,,i read an article somewhere about Doug Sahm and the Texas Tornados which said Flaco had died .I`m glad it was wrong.

  • ..one of my all time favorites..period....

  • The beat doesn't go with the theme of the song. Jim Reeves and Elvis did better versions.

  • @DocHolliday1881 I wouldn't want to argue with someone using your handle but for me this soft reggae rhythm makes the lyrics even more poignant than the versions that you mention. It is beautifully played and as Picasso said, 'If there were only one truth, you couldn't paint a hundred canvases on the same theme.

  • This song was playing on my parent's marriage.

    ;p :°)

  • one of the all time greatest songs

  • is that Flaco playing?

  • @jimmygeilman R .I .P .Flaco

  • @MultiJaylea Errr....so far as I know, Flaco is still very much with us. At least Wikipedia and the "Dead or Alive" site both list him among the living at 72 years of age.

  • worst ever

  • nobody beats jim reeves at this!!

  • @vinnothelizard nope nobody!

  • This old favorite really comes across so wonderful with Cooder. I need to go to some old beer joint, have a dozen cold olds and cry into each and every empty bottle

  • Best version ever!

  • thanks for this Ry is one of my all time favourites

  • I adore Ry Cooder but back in '77 he looked like Alan Partridge AHA!

  • It's so bad even I'm offended for Jim. It's like a horrible Jimmy Buffet wannabe.

  • Ry Cooder is the shit!!! Have every one of his albums.

  • Much better than Jim Reeves...

  • @TheRunner75 Wow, are you positive? Check out jimmy lomax version, though. It's on sirshamblingdot....

  • @strandwolf Sorry, not in YT

  • @TheRunner75 No it is on the SirShamblingdotcom website. He has the flip by Lomax only, on YT, for some unknown reason. It's not in the same league, though, IMO.

  • I enjoy hearing this version more and more each time I turn it on!!

    Thank you, Ry Cooder!!!

  • hat a wonderful young that grew to be such a beautiful legacy to the music world--he has accomplished many wonderful things---including his " Buena Vista " endeavor that was magnificent!!

  • thank you very much for posting this wonderful song....thx, thx, thx :-)

  • mbroders,,

THANKs for putting this very nice version of He'll have to go. Really NICE, AWESome!!

Ry Cooder is the best in this combination of 'orkesta'. Really beautifull!!

  • Oh boy...great, wonderful, magnificent. Thank you mbroders for this and many other superb Ry Cooder posts.

Bobby King and Terry Evans made an excellent album of their own in the early eighties(?) which I used to own- now I can't even remember what it was called... Any idea? Or maybe even a post..he asked hopefully..

  • @kfb998p

I have an album of theirs called "Live and Let Live". I bought it within the last two years on Amazon.

  • Flaco is awesome! BTW, who's that singing backup? I used to know his name but forgot.

  • That's Bobby King - long time backup singer with Ry Cooder - check out his performance of "Chain Gang" (watch?v=dqW3zGeeIUU) - awesome!

  • He dances to the song with such feeling---I love it!!

  • This is my most favorite version of this song!!!

  • Wonderful artist!
