DO NOT put your distortion last in the chain, it sounds awful. Think about what is actually happening and it will make complete sense.Jeff says to put distortion last. @dangle66 Definitely!!! That is the best way to go. If you are not confident with an FX loop, just put your distortion before ALL of your other effects. It is the only way that it really makes an sonic sense.
if you run a looper through the effects loop, and then record distortion into it, will the returning distortion simulate the breaking of the rule of no distortion in the effects loop? im thinking it will just duplicate just as clear, or will it boost and possibly mess things up?....or should i just run my 2 korg and zoom processors into the fx loop and keep the high gain distortion and looper in the front?
hey, how do you power all your pedals without using a separate power supply or batteries for each one? i have the boss tu-3 which can power some othe pedals but not my line 6 dl4. what cord do i need to buy to transfer the tu-3's power to the other pedals?...and would you just us the single power supply for the line 6 dl4?
If I use the effects loop for my non-distortion pedals, then how will I be able to invoke, say a tremolo that is in the effects loop, but my ts9 is straight into the front of the amp? Thank you for your help in this.
@Reflix91 With a parallel loop, some of your signal will go directly from the pre-amp to the power-amp when with a series loop, all of what's coming out of the pre-amp will go through your effects processors and then to the power-amp. With a parallel loop you'll have a "dry-wet" knob on your amp that allows you to choose the amount of signal that goes through your effects processors.
@crisis610 The best pedals to start with are overdrive/distortion on top of the amps drive, so you can learn to add layers of dirt for soloing, etc. Then get a wah and a vibe pedal of some kind. They will help you start thinking about timing and using effects to add color. Delay, flange, octave, and fuzz are very specialized effects, so you want to build up to them.
I'm really confused. Another YouTube post suggested starting with your wag then compressor, then tube driver, then any blues it metal pedals and then and EQ, and all of your chorus, delay and octaver pedals last. I guess there's no right way huh? Just have to play around with what sounds best for your playing style and expectations? What is better to use, individual batteries for all of your pedals it a main peer supply booster?
@wileypayote Fuck man, don't feel bad I heard the same thing you did. In fact, most people I know talk to and research suggest having modulation last and OD's/Distortions first.

Im a beginner and have been playing for almost a year now, but i still dont under stand any of these effects and stuff. This equipment seems difficult to use and understand, i wish i new all this technical stuff :(
I run my distortion clean boost in my loop, ahead of my chorus and delay. I do everything he said not to and my tone kills. I like the fact that my distortion blows up the other effects. I can also adjust the balance of effects to amp & I generally keep the effected signal low.

so i have a Fender Twin Reverb amp and it doesnt have an effects loop. and i dont really use anything else but gain and a loop station Rc-20xl. how do i have a loop going while soloing over it without making the actual loop distorted?
@Metallicafan13 the gain pdl's out should be hooked to the rc20's in. having the gain pdl put after the looper sends the loops crashing through it. having gain first puts the lead parts into the looper to be processed exactly the same as ne thing else. the rc 20xl should be at the end of ne effects loop if you wanna record all the fx tht you play with. its all about the signal moving forward and the way tht u allow the fx to run into eachother in the line. gain is an employee of the looper lol
I have read about some players who use the natural distortion of the amp using a Boost pedal in the effects loop. Is this dangerous? @fromthenorthwest No. the main advantage is that when you go through the effects loop it allows the amp to maintain it's best tone possible by using the correct signal path. @joho1701 There are a few interesting videos you may want to check out on YouTube that demonstrate some VooDoo Labs products that will probably solve your problem. The first of the 4 (or5) videos can be found by entering FIRnr3xPLsE in the YouTube search bar. The others can be accessed from there. Hope this helps.
@RigorMortis203 personally, i would keep the metal wah and maybe the slow motion out of the loop. try out different combos though. only learn till you try
According to your video the "modulation" type pedals can go through the loop while the high-gain/distortion/boosts one go from your guitar into the front. My question is how to set-up my single pedal board conatining both types of pedals to the amp.
@joho1701 break your signal. i run my dirt into the front and the delay, flange, and reverb in the effects loop. something that was like a revelation to me was, just because theyre all on the same board doesnt mean they need to be going to the same place. so, on the left side of the board put you gain pedals and run your guitar straight into them. then on the right side of the board group your "looped" effects and run them to the amp.
For the effects loop, do you know if I can use the Boss psm-5 pedal with the daisy chain to power the other pedals in the loop? I can't find any videos of it on youtube without comments being disabled. It has its own send and return, as well as an input going to the amp and one going to the guitar. I don't know if it can power the pedals in the effects loop without going straight into the guitar. If you can look at the pedal and help me out, I'll be forever grateful!!
I need help. I have a Digitech RP300 Effects Processor, Boss DS-1, and Boss CH-1. How would I hook these pedals up? My whole sound is pretty much coming from my RP 300. Whats the best way to hook the pedals up?
@DiscoverRicky2008 got an rp300a myself. try guitar to ds1 to amp and then the other two in the loop. just swap those two around to see what sounds better
Great video! My only criticism is that you should have emphasized that distortion pedals really should go in front of the amp rather than the loop. I know you DID say that delay/ chorus/ harmonizers go in the loop, but you didn't mention distortion or boost pedals. Otherwise - A+! :)
can i put an multieffects pedal in the loop?have a boss me70 and was thinking to use it only for effects an for boost (so i get the distortion from the amp),will that work in the loop?thanks
where would my wah pedal go? the effects loop or in front? and if in front should it be before or after the distortion? also, would a flanger go work in the effects loop as well?
that amp he using has a PARALLEL Fx Loop, which in my opinion isn't worth the powder to blow it up...lol..Can't even MUTE to tune with it...SERIES sounds better, all the fx are WET and not "beside' you tone like that one...I'll keep my B-52 AT100....
There is no effects loop on my amp, so is there a way I can use effects (I mean a lot of effects) through some sort of external effects loop like a pedal or something? If not are there any ways I can get something like an effects loop when my amp lacks one?
I've always used distortion/overdrive pedals in front. Compressors and distortion boxes in the loop have always created uncontrollable feedback in my experience. I'm sure there's a way to make it work, but loops are really designed for line-level effects, aren't they?
I really don't think this guy has a clue to be honest. I always run my dist before time based effects and so does everyone else I know. Check it out, here is my rig Vol>Comp>Wah>Dist>Pitch shift>Chorus>delay>Looper>Amp. I dont have an amp with a decent effects loop, but it still sounds kick ass!!
fattirevsbud is right, this is the only place that tells you put your distortion towards to end. Every other site has said put distortion in the front. Again there is no right or wrong but i personally prefer distortion in the front. It sounds ratty to me if its in the back.
Actually, a overdrive pedal in the effects loop works great as a boost. Turn the gain down and the volume up a bit, adjust the tone and you have a boost pedal. The Keely modded Boss Blues Driver works GREAT for this!
I would put it at the beginning of the loop because it sounds smoother. Its all personal preference, but i find the highs (peak) of the wah can be a little harsh if its at the end of the loop.
FX Loop makes it so you can put your effects after you on-board distortion. That is its function. If you have a clean amp, and use stomp boxes for distortion, you don't need a XF Loop. And Huyiy is right about his sequence; it is the generally accepted rule (volume pedal, tuner, gain based pedals, modulation, volume/level (tremolo), then echo and time based (delay reverb). So following this rule,I would only put octave, flange, delay, ect. in FX loop cuz they r after distortion/gain in line.
good day sir,... i really need some help here, hope you dont mind, the problem is i dont know what good set-up i can make, i mean, i have this BOSS, metalzone(MT2), metalcore(ML2), distortion(DS1),overdrive(OD3), distortions,... then i have this BOSS dig.reverb(RV5), dig.delay(DD7), dig.delay(DD3), superchorus(CH1), flanger(BF3), phaseshifter(PH3), acoustic simulator(AC3), noise suppressor(NS2) and boss v-wah.... can you help me what's the best set up for this thing?.. thanks...
everywhere else i hear from and read from says totally different... first pedals should be volume pedal, tuner, gain based pedals, modulation, volume/level (tremolo), then echo and time based (delay reverb).
A general rule is to think about which pedals have the most gain\distortion. Once you have thought this through put those with the most gain at the end of your effects chain. Last but not least keep in mind there are no rules,so set your pedals up in every possible order until you find a sound you love.
hey, when you said the distortion should come last from the chain, did you mean, from the guitar? e.g. guitar-chorus-delay-phaser-distortion-amplifier-- something like this? or the other way around? thanks, this was very informative.
I think he made a mistake the effect like distortion should come first after the guitar and before the delay and chorus, at least that's what i heard in another video,
@webmasterman wrong. putting the pedals with the most gain/distortion at the end of the chain, after the delay in this case, would give undesirable results.
i need help. is a reverb petal work good in the loop?? he said chorus and delay so i would reverb too? secondly, i got a bk butler tube driver and a boss compression sustainer. does this even make sence? why do most people always put the compressor FIRST? Im starting to think my compressor is totally useless anywhere in the same room as a tube driver. thanks.
A reverb pedal should work just fine in the loop. A compressor pedal usually goes first so that it will compress the basic signal going into the chain . If you were to put it later in the chain the signal may become overly driven thus the compression would not be able to keep up and compress.
@kdjfnvjvd I am old school and having many boards I put all modulation pedals in the loop. Youre reverb should be last in the loop unless you have noise reduction or a BBE. Chorus, delay, reverb in the loop.Lose the compressor ig you are running high dist gains, they already heavy compress the signal, tube compress the signal, high gain is already comressed, too much is not good. Drop that and get an OD for different color. Run the Butler amp in. get yourself an OD before the high gain
I'm having a lot of trouble hear figuring this out.
I have a Boss NS-2 Noise suppressor and a Maxon OD808, and I'm not sure how to run this through my FX loop to get it to sound the best and get rid of most the hum and hiss while retaining most of my amp and guitars tone. Any help? Anyone?
this guy seems pretty dumb, half this stuff anyone with an amp good enough to have an effects loop or even pedals should be able to figure all this stuff out on their own
This site is for people who want to help each other. If you don't have anything constructive to add, then please don't participate. The world has enough know-it-alls.
my buddy's amp is humming and acting weird all of a sudden and my other friend says it's because he has run a multi effect pedal through the front input for years and that the amp will just eventually be unrepairable, is this true?
An important thing to know, is whether the loop you are using is parallel (usually has the "mix" control) or serial, as that will have a big big effect on what you end up with.
I don't suggest putting dynamics fx (compressor/eq/noise gate etc) in these [parallel/mix] kinds of loops, as they alter the sound permenantly and the blended version you end up with often sounds nasty or pointless in the case of gates and eq.
that's what i do. it sounds great. the solos i play use a wah with distortion. and when i was messing with my order putting the wah before distortion didn't sound right. now why don't i want to put my distortion into my effects loop? What exactly does it do?
so when i have an Electro harmonix POG, an EHX memory man deluxe and a TS-808, my chain is: GUITAR --> TS808 --> input amp. and SEND effectsloop ---> Deluxe memory man --> POG--> Effectsloop RETURN??
uno this is the way i set up my pedals and it sounds perfect, amp cable, into mono out multieffect output, input, boss ds1 distortion, output, delta lab chorus pedal, output my guitar cable,it sounds amazing witha first act that costs 300 bucks
naked stick fingers, have you got it the right way round cos that sounds like the leads need switching round, or tweak the effects loop level if it has one
I have a question, I play a Peavey Valveking, (Which has an effects loop), I try putting it straight into the amp, and the delayed note sounds distorted. When I plug it through the effects loop, theres no sign of the delay pedal. And also when I plug anything into the effects loop, the amp stays at an incredibly low volume, and no matter how much I adjust the volume, it stays the same.
Any guitar store will have "pedal patch cables". You can get real close with "Effects Pedal Couplers" Straight or offset to accommodate different brands.
Long story short the most important thing I could ever tell anyone interested in the ART OF MUSIC is there are no rules try anything and everything and decide if you like the result. With that said explore away and see what you find. You just might stumble onto something new a refreshing. Good Luck
So placing distortion first is not a good idea, but using an effects loop is? What if I like the distortion on my amp (Mesa Express)?
I've been looking for a good pedal for a solo boost and the UberMetal sounds very filtered through the effects loop. Any thoughts?
Also, I'm curious about these 18V effects pedals. Does this damage the amp? I put a Slash Wah in the loop, and all I got was horrible screaming when I used it's on board distortion.
Chili it depends on your application as to going in the front or the back. If you are using distortion effects I'd for sure go in through the front with a clean tone. If you are using amp distortion which is what I prefer, and using effects like delay, chorus, flange, etc. I'd go through the loop.
Long story short trial and error will get you where you want to be. Thanks for your interest.
usually there are some effects you run before the amp, such as shown in the vid... but some others you want to run after the amp. That´s where the loops come in... with loops you can set another chain of pedals that work after the amp. For example if you are using the distortion of the amp and you want to plug a delay, you can´t do it before the amp cuz it would sound horrible, you want to put it after the distortion... you use loops for this... this guy doesn´t explain that quite well
Yes you can and should use the loop and the front of your amp at the same time. Please don't quote me on this since I am not a tech guy all questions about what your amp can do should be in the users guide or with customer service of the company who makes the amp.
where ever you want i have: Fender jaguar to Korg Pitchblack ->phase 90 -> crybaby -> Proco Rat -> Boss Dynamic Wah - > DOD Stero Flange-> amp. I'v seen a ton of videos thatsay where you should put your pedals but put them where ever you think sounds best.
Im glad this video is here for people. I NEVER used to use my amps effects loop. Once I did I relized how much tone I was losing!!

According to your video the "modulation" type pedals can go through the loop while the high-gain/distortion/boosts one go from your guitar into the front. My question is how to set-up my single pedal board conatining both types of pedals to the amp.
joho1701 1 year ago
@joho1701 break your signal. i run my dirt into the front and the delay, flange, and reverb in the effects loop. something that was like a revelation to me was, just because theyre all on the same board doesnt mean they need to be going to the same place. so, on the left side of the board put you gain pedals and run your guitar straight into them. then on the right side of the board group your "looped" effects and run them to the amp.

Can i still use my amps distortion channels and footswitch if i use my effects loop for my effects pedals?
poosnube4 1 year ago
Nice vid.

Hello Sir, I do have a multi effects pedal (Digitech RP90). can i plug it to any amps with effects loop?
I love my separate distortion pedal but I also like the modulations on the multi effects.
Is this possible? Thanks a mile!

Great video! My only criticism is that you should have emphasized that distortion pedals really should go in front of the amp rather than the loop. I know you DID say that delay/ chorus/ harmonizers go in the loop, but you didn't mention distortion or boost pedals. Otherwise - A+! :)

There is no effects loop on my amp, so is there a way I can use effects (I mean a lot of effects) through some sort of external effects loop like a pedal or something? If not are there any ways I can get something like an effects loop when my amp lacks one?
modestvermin995 2 years ago
I've always used distortion/overdrive pedals in front. Compressors and distortion boxes in the loop have always created uncontrollable feedback in my experience. I'm sure there's a way to make it work, but loops are really designed for line-level effects, aren't they?
jerseystringer 2 years ago
I really don't think this guy has a clue to be honest. I always run my dist before time based effects and so does everyone else I know. Check it out, here is my rig Vol>Comp>Wah>Dist>Pitch shift>Chorus>delay>Looper>Amp. I dont have an amp with a decent effects loop, but it still sounds kick ass!!
dvrapant 1 year ago
fattirevsbud is right, this is the only place that tells you put your distortion towards to end. Every other site has said put distortion in the front. Again there is no right or wrong but i personally prefer distortion in the front. It sounds ratty to me if its in the back.

cracksmokinbaby 2 years ago
Actually, a overdrive pedal in the effects loop works great as a boost. Turn the gain down and the volume up a bit, adjust the tone and you have a boost pedal. The Keely modded Boss Blues Driver works GREAT for this!

where do i put a wah front or effect loop
pool741 2 years ago
I would put it at the beginning of the loop because it sounds smoother. Its all personal preference, but i find the highs (peak) of the wah can be a little harsh if its at the end of the loop.

FX Loop makes it so you can put your effects after you on-board distortion. That is its function. If you have a clean amp, and use stomp boxes for distortion, you don't need a XF Loop. And Huyiy is right about his sequence; it is the generally accepted rule (volume pedal, tuner, gain based pedals, modulation, volume/level (tremolo), then echo and time based (delay reverb). So following this rule,I would only put octave, flange, delay, ect. in FX loop cuz they r after distortion/gain in line.

xtremetitan03 2 years ago
everywhere else i hear from and read from says totally different... first pedals should be volume pedal, tuner, gain based pedals, modulation, volume/level (tremolo), then echo and time based (delay reverb).
huyiy 2 years ago
Where would a tuner generally be placed? Would it go in the effects loop?
izzman007 2 years ago
do u have to have an effects loop
basketcase219 2 years ago
A general rule is to think about which pedals have the most gain\distortion. Once you have thought this through put those with the most gain at the end of your effects chain. Last but not least keep in mind there are no rules,so set your pedals up in every possible order until you find a sound you love.
webmasterman 2 years ago
hey, when you said the distortion should come last from the chain, did you mean, from the guitar? e.g. guitar-chorus-delay-phaser-distortion-amplifier-- something like this? or the other way around? thanks, this was very informative.
jasonism123 2 years ago
I think he made a mistake the effect like distortion should come first after the guitar and before the delay and chorus, at least that's what i heard in another video,
the effect goes back up to the guitar
fattirevsbud 2 years ago
@webmasterman wrong. putting the pedals with the most gain/distortion at the end of the chain, after the delay in this case, would give undesirable results.
brownbigb 1 year ago
i need help. is a reverb petal work good in the loop?? he said chorus and delay so i would reverb too? secondly, i got a bk butler tube driver and a boss compression sustainer. does this even make sence? why do most people always put the compressor FIRST? Im starting to think my compressor is totally useless anywhere in the same room as a tube driver. thanks.
kdjfnvjvd 2 years ago
A reverb pedal should work just fine in the loop. A compressor pedal usually goes first so that it will compress the basic signal going into the chain . If you were to put it later in the chain the signal may become overly driven thus the compression would not be able to keep up and compress.
webmasterman 2 years ago
ok thanks 4 the help.
kdjfnvjvd 2 years ago
@kdjfnvjvd Yea i have a randall and if i wanna turn all my effects all together at once i just press the effectsloop/reverb :)
redwinters 1 year ago
@kdjfnvjvd I am old school and having many boards I put all modulation pedals in the loop. Youre reverb should be last in the loop unless you have noise reduction or a BBE. Chorus, delay, reverb in the loop.Lose the compressor ig you are running high dist gains, they already heavy compress the signal, tube compress the signal, high gain is already comressed, too much is not good. Drop that and get an OD for different color. Run the Butler amp in. get yourself an OD before the high gain
CarvinTone 1 year ago
@kdjfnvjvd That's the only place to put it it sounds like shit in front
kennykanowski 1 year ago
@kdjfnvjvd you were right. using a boss compressor with the bk tube driver is totally useless. even more so it hurts your tone if anything.

my buddy's amp is humming and acting weird all of a sudden and my other friend says it's because he has run a multi effect pedal through the front input for years and that the amp will just eventually be unrepairable, is this true?
MitchTenderness 2 years ago
An important thing to know, is whether the loop you are using is parallel (usually has the "mix" control) or serial, as that will have a big big effect on what you end up with.
I don't suggest putting dynamics fx (compressor/eq/noise gate etc) in these [parallel/mix] kinds of loops, as they alter the sound permenantly and the blended version you end up with often sounds nasty or pointless in the case of gates and eq.
Personally, i go:
Gain -> Dynamics (serial) -> fx (parallel)

There's nothing wrong with doing that, I just think it's better to use the amp's distortion

If the chain consist in analog true bypass pedals the order or the pedals will not affect the overall sound.

naked stick fingers, have you got it the right way round cos that sounds like the leads need switching round, or tweak the effects loop level if it has one
deftrap 2 years ago
I have a question, I play a Peavey Valveking, (Which has an effects loop), I try putting it straight into the amp, and the delayed note sounds distorted. When I plug it through the effects loop, theres no sign of the delay pedal. And also when I plug anything into the effects loop, the amp stays at an incredibly low volume, and no matter how much I adjust the volume, it stays the same.

WAH Effect should be first in your chain . . .
gogharmonics 2 years ago
it should go as such: guitar, distortion/over-drive, wah, flanger/chorus, delays, reverb, whammy pedal, loopers/recording pedal.
slashnpraise 2 years ago
So placing distortion first is not a good idea, but using an effects loop is? What if I like the distortion on my amp (Mesa Express)?
I've been looking for a good pedal for a solo boost and the UberMetal sounds very filtered through the effects loop. Any thoughts?
Also, I'm curious about these 18V effects pedals. Does this damage the amp? I put a Slash Wah in the loop, and all I got was horrible screaming when I used it's on board distortion.

great info..I have a boss me 70, would I loop it the same way, or just plug in the input and run on clean channel? Thanks
chilichad 3 years ago
Chili it depends on your application as to going in the front or the back. If you are using distortion effects I'd for sure go in through the front with a clean tone. If you are using amp distortion which is what I prefer, and using effects like delay, chorus, flange, etc. I'd go through the loop.
Long story short trial and error will get you where you want to be. Thanks for your interest.

whats an effects loop i know what it is but what does it do
Angelo7silver10 3 years ago
usually there are some effects you run before the amp, such as shown in the vid... but some others you want to run after the amp.
