  • ahhh i love the father all bundled up with all those scarves! he is just so cute!

  • SHIPCOURT! hahahahhaha

  • i absolutely hated the version with gwyneth paltrow! i do not like her at all! but Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightly was excellent, i absolutely loved him. i love this version! it's more spirited than any other version i've seen. I love Romala's and JLM's interaction with each other

  • how many mr Elton s and how little mr Knightley we have this days!!!

  • @primavera331 I completely agree. I was trying to figure out just the other day how many Mr. Knightley's I know and how many Mr. Eltons. I know way too many Mr. Eltons

  • this version is very good!!!! I simply love this kind of movies!!!!!

  • @primavera331 i totally agree with you! There must be more of this productions, don't you think guys?

  • I love the song they're playing in the beginning, so pretty :D

  • Why is Emma the one with the fortune? Isn't her sister the older one?

Or is her father's wealth so big, that they are both very secure? Does anyone know? I cannot remember the book properly.

  • some guys just look way better and charming with olden days-clothes on. hint hint blake ritson

  • @magicrystalina

He looks incredible in everything though! ♥

But yeah, I'm starting to get a serious fixation to men with period clothes since I'm always watching things like this :D

  • oooh, Mr. Elton is soow SWEET!!! >___< Blake Ritson's such a great, CUTE actor!! ^___^

  • One thing I like about communities with close family ties is that romance isn't nearly as important. When you live in an extended family and close community your relational needs are met from so many different angles - whereas when you get seperated from that - romance/marriage is all you really have and your husband becomes so much more important to that area of your life. It ends up hanging off him which puts way more pressure on a relationship then is really, optimunly healthy.

  • I like Gywneths emma because she's very classy and her portrayal is far closer to the original character in my opinion. she 'is' a gentlemans daughter where as Romolas approach is more spontaneous and fun. I like both but I think Gywneths version is more accurate and elegant.

  • SHIP COURT!

  • Romola Garai is simply fantastic in The BBC's The Crimson Petal and the White, a gutsy Victorian period piece, where she plays 'Sugar' a 17 year old bangtail (prostitute). I HIGHLY recommend it!It too is on YouTube!!!

  • when emma first gets introduced to mr. martin, her facial expressions said it all perfectly...romala garai's version of emma is the best! thanks for sharing.

  • Wow I remember the 'Emma' phase I went through last year. Damn, I miss the late nights watching the series over and over.

  • shipcourt!!! is that it? LOL.

  • I rewatched this now and I am now inclined to like this adaptation best of all. Ramola was fabulous. Gwyneth is a fine actrees but she really doesn't do Emma justice, not like Ramola.

  • I love emma's dress in the beginning... the blue one :)

  • I like that in this version Isabella and her husband play more important roles, that they actually appear in scenes and talk and such. You hardly see them in the other version!

  • "SHIPCOURT!" bahahah Harriet is so dumb, I love it!

  • Ramola Garai is the very essence of Emma! I'm very impressed, to be honest it is my least favourite Jane Austen Book, and after reading it I immediately watched the Gwenth Paltrow version and it didn't help. But this version is simply amazing.

  • the best version of Emma of all time!

  • I know some find Romola Garai's portrayal annoying and so on, but Emma is not meant to be be perfect! She is meant to be irritatingly stubborn and sometimes ridiculous: yet somehow very endearing at the same time. That is the beauty of her character - that and her journey from spoilt child to fine young woman. She is not exactly a character you can admire, but you still find her very likable. Romola Garai portrays this perfectly, and her facial expressions are nothing less than priceless!

  • this version is my favorite "Emma" however my favorite miniseries is North and South (2007) but this is definitely 2nd followed closely by P&P miniseries (1995)!!

  • Oh my God watching this now reminds me of my Austen phase last year :)

  • I think Gweneth Paltro played Emma nearer the character in the book. This Emma is too severe in her ways.

  • hahaha emmas face when harriet couldnt get the riddle. hahahaha so funny:)

  • I find it funny that the wise Albus Dumbledore is now the well meaning but foolish Mr. Woodhouse. I lke how he is portrayed in this movie, it shows that it was his wife's death that brought so much fear in sickness and death.

  • @rking87 Actually Mr. Woodhouse was a hypochondriac when his wife was still alive. You can see it at the beginning where he keeps tucking blankets around baby Emma in the buggy with his wife looking on and smiling about it..

  • lol poor horse

  • I could stair at Jonny Lee Miller all day :)

  • yeees i miss jeremy nothham as mr. knightley!!

  • that horse rides so funny!

  • what can court and ship signify?

    *clueless look on harriet's face*

  • A fabulous adaptation of one of my favourite Jane Austen novels

  • Gee, Miss Smith sure seems like a big dunce in this series.

  • ship-court!!! hahah...

  • After watching Mansfield Park and absolutely adoring Blake Ritson as Edmund I could never hate him even if he is so over the top as Elton haha =D

  • Mondrudru, a virtual toast to you for being one of Youtube's finest for posting this series. Cheers! :-D

  • I like this Emma better than Gwyneth, but Keira Knightley would be the real perfect Emma. And, in fact, Emma has been written after Pride & Prejudice, and ought to be a better version of Elizabeth Bennet. Elizabeth and Emma are much alike, but Emma has more freedome, more money and has no wisdom at all, just like Lizzy in the first place. Keira would have played Emma perfect.

  • @TheUranianMelody Agreeeeeeeed!!!!!!! Keira Knightley would definitely be perfect for the role of Emma.

  • Oh Emma, you silly silly girl! It's obvious who Elton likes!

  • Oh I So Love This Emma She Looks So Cheerful ! <3

  • An actress who plays Harrieta Smith is very chraming.

  • this is my fav Emma.

  • I think Romola is my favorite Emma

  • Emma is hilarious in dealing with Harriet and her stupidity. She is the perfect Emma.

  • I like her dress :)

  • yummy, Mr. Elton is delicious :P

  • SHIP COURT!

  • I don't really understand why Emma is so nervous at 9:29 ?

But I think it's sweet that Mr Knightley helped her

  • @Ceetje69 In those times, it was the hostess's duty that everything "went off without a hitch" at a dinner with guests. She had lost control of the situation and Mr. Knightley kindly stepped in to change the grumpy atmosphere.

  • This verison in some areas if much more faithful to the book...

  • is this still on tv? i like it!

  • I like how they read the line "your ready wit" and Emma thinks it is for Harriet, but SHE is the one deciphering it.

  • Mr. Elton is fwiiiiiine!!! lol i'm just sayin'...

  • The bbc always does the adapations of Jane Austens novels justice. Always sticking to the stories and the characters seem more real.

  • @bubblezcookielove Couldn't have said it better myself. :)

  • my god, she really is daft isnt she?

  • ' SHIPCOURT!'

    ahhh. she never gets old

  • Mr Knightly doesn't look at Emma! Very nice tactic :)

  • I love how mr. Elton's horse always slides a little bit when he comes to a stop... as if he's just slightly heavier than he appears.

  • @Magichobler That is exactly what i thought!!

  • I`m loveing the intro to this<3<3

  • I really like the way they put together these episodes of the movie...it's different and entertaining....job well done

  • "Thats very true...I think" LOL Harriet Smith is sooooo funny!!!!!

  • '' Ah, SHIPCOURT!!''

    * Blank face*

  • this is a very nice version, but my mind still loves the riddle part in the Gwyneth Paltrow one best.

  • The girl who plays Harriet Smith is quite pretty, in fact she looks somewhat like Taylor Swift.

  • @EverlastingxHope lol I actually thought she looks kind of like Nicole Kidman! but yes she's very pretty.

  • ship-court!!!!!!!!!

  • um... emma.... please take the hint elton likes you

  • @vivimaze true...however....knightley is best for her....whether or not they want to face and admit it

  • The only objection I have with this version is that Mr. Knightley is supposed to be a number of years older than Emma, is he not? Johnny Lee Miller is just a wee bit young methinks, but he *is* wonderful eye-candy. ;)

  • I believe that at the time this production was filmed Johnny Lee Miller was 36, around the same age as Jane Austen's Mr. Knightly.

  • This adaptation is my favourite!

  • I think this whole production is fabulous; it is my favorite among the three adaptations. Personally, I don't see the great draw with the Gwyneth version - she just doesn't do the character of Emma justice. I'll admit that the other cast members are quite good - Jeremy Northham was a fantastic Mr. Knightley. But Romala Garai's acting, presence, and facial expressions are priceless!

  • ITA

  • @talia1387 I've only seen the one in 1996 or so with Gywneth Paltrow. I liked that one a lot...

  • @talia1387 well said, well said.

  • I love this Emma and the latest Pride and Prejudice movie (2005). I even prefer it to the - dare I say - television adaptation itself. I prefer the actors and they style. Am I alone in this idea?

  • @peachy800 No you most certainly are not! I think the latest Pride and Prejudice is amazing!

  • @peachy800 no ur not, I think the movie was way better then the tv adaptation...I jux keep it to myself lol

  • I could dissect this production for all its faults for days, but I have to say I'm amazed that they've chosen to make Elton a handsome and agreeable man--and not the usual fawning, blathering or pompous dope of a clergyman that is usually in these Austen novels-turned-movie.... Anyone know if Jane Austen had something against the C of E? lol.

  • Don't forget Edward Ferrars in Sense and Sensibility wants to become a clergyman :)

  • Yes, and E.F.'s a sweetheart. Good point.

    But, Hugh Grant...

  • Maybe then, it's not that her clergymen are silly but that the silly men tend to be clergymen :P

  • Hahaha! For a brief time when I was very young, I wanted to be a priest! Got over that quickly... but I am still silly.

  • Nope, she was pretty much into the C of E. Wrote some prayers and stuff. And both her father and two of her brothers were clergymen...

  • I remember learning her father was in the clergy, but didn't know about the brothers or that she wrote prayers. Thanks for the information.

  • @nauort23 Please share your dissecion with us! I'm so excited to find out what other people think about this adaptation! I haven't quite made up my mind, I haven't watched the whole thing yet...

  • Just as soon as I finish fighting with someone else who says that my petty criticisms don't matter! I'll say this: one of Jane Austen's unique and strongest talents was her ability to express so much love/hate/passion/etc. in a story where characters never so much as lay a finger on another person or raise their voices. Her books are masterpieces of subtlety. I don't feel this production, with its "eye-rolling" and brash, smart-assedness, really captures that finest gift of Jane Austen.

  • Which is your favourite production? Mine is the ITV film from 1996 with Kate Beckinsale.

  • My favorite production of an Austen novel is Persuasion (1995) w/ Amanda Root. I also like the Pride and Prejudice BBC miniseries from the same year. I've yet to see an Emma I love. I'll get hissed and boo-ed off YT for saying I truly enjoyed Clueless, I'm sure, but I think if one's going to throw out much of Austen's dialogue and play with the era of the story to make it more palatable to today's audience, THAT movie got the spirit of Emma much better than some of these BBC prig-fests.

  • I actually like Clueless too, despite -- some parts of it work better than others, but I think it has captured something at the core of Emma. As spin-offs go it's a great success. I like Persuasion too, and P&P, though I can't help feeling that it is a litle overrated as THE best Austen adaption. There's so much cult around it. Have you seen alla the Emmas (BBC 1972, ITV 1996, McGrath 1996)?

  • Don't know how that "despite" got in there -- just ignore it!

  • I think you're right about the cult of P&P ('95); maybe one of the reasons it's rated so highly is its faithfulness to the novel. I thought the Beckinsale Emma was much better than the others I've seen--which would be all except the BBC '72. Do you recommend it? Please elaborate on your "despite" re: Clueless. I just can't ignore it! lol

  • I do most decidedly and emphaically NOT recommend it. I mean you can watch it if you like, of course, but I don't think it will be a very positive experience. Very wordy, but very little of the original dialogue left. You didn't get the feeling that anyone in the production took the story seriously, but it wasn't funny. The worst of two worlds, really. And I really do like P&P a lot, I'm just a bit uncomfortable about its extreme cult status.

  • I wrote "despite" because I started to add something but then changed my mind because I realised it didnt make sense, and I guess I forgot to delete it. It really doen't matter, I can't even remember what I was going to say.

  • @nauort23 I actually saw Clueless before I read/watched Emma. I'll always adore Clueless. I think they did a fantastic job. I agree the Amanda Root Persuasion is wonderful. P&P miniseries is my favourite adaptation of them all.

  • @billiebutton18 Wow, our taste in Jane Austen adaptations are very similar. Please make recommendations, as there are several newer (and older) versions that I haven't seen.

  • Of all the beautiful music in this show, this one is my favorite. Brilliant, love it to pieces!!

  • emma yells, "COURTSHIP" best part :)

  • Treblemaker... I think so too. I ride and either that horse is flighty, he is a bad rider or it is uncomfortable doing something. Also he is cantering downhill, which is dangerous. But oh well.

  • This Emma looks like Drew Barrymore at some points...they have similar facial expressions and features.

  • She almost sounds like a British version of her, too. Or am I imagining it now that I think it looks like her.

  • i'm watching this right now, and i've been thinking that the whole time.

  • Poor Emma. she wants so badly for Mr. Knightley to be her friend she had to "ask for the salt". her face looked so miserable.

  • finally! Thank you for posting it

  • Am I the only one who finds it funny that both Knightly and Elton have formerly played the role of Edmund in Mansfield Park? :D

And yes, sasishka! I thought the same thing when I saw the painting!

  • @DWFAN20 you are not the only one. i find it extremely amusing!!!

  • @DWFAN20 you are not the only one! i have both versions of Mansfield Park, and i laugh everytime i see this movie! personally i think Blake Ritson played a better Edmund than Johnny Lee Miller.

  • @DWFAN20 it is, although I think the man who plays my elton is even better in this role. he does the slightly comic and satirical really well. i think it's pretty hard to be an austen hero.

  • thank you!:))

  • omg!!! thank you!!!!!!

  • SHIP COURT! XD

    ahahah ftw.

  • @PrLsB4sWiiNe And Emma was so exasperated! :D

  • I feel as though if I had lived during this time period, I would be exactly like this Emma. So many times people from period drams are portrayed stuffily and although many were like that, I just can't help but imagine that there were a few high energy people like myself, who just could not be contained!

  • I agree, people have always had different sensibilities and personalities. Just because they were before doesn't mean there was no variety.

  • I don't really understand why Emma is panicking at the end. But the look from Mr Knightley is cute and it's sweet that he helped her <3

  • 2:07 - it's probably my imagination but that couple in the picture looks a lot like Mr Darcy and Lizzy Bennet (from the BBC P&P)

  • well, then it's also my imagination, because i think the same ;) funny!

  • Watch Mr. Elton's horse starting at 3:36

It might be that I'm not a horsewoman but even his horse is a bit awkward...

  • ftw I laughed so hard. XD

  • is Emma the same actress who played Reese Witherspoons friend in Vanity Fair?thats a really good movie,if you've never seen it

  • This is my favorite version of Emma yet!! i absolutely love it! Johnny Lee Millar is the best Mr. Knightley!!!!! =) <3

  • Once again, thank you for the hard work in uploading this. I may not enjoy the production as I do the older versions, but I want to express my gratitude in the fact that I'm able to watch this at all! :)

  • Thanks a million for uploading this! I have been trying to find the rest of this movie for a while now! :)

  • thank you!!

  • Blake Ritson looks hot! I didn't like him in MP but do here.

  • He's hot in general, whether it be in MP or not. But yes, his performance in MP is much worse than Johnny's!

  • Thank you!!

  • Hi - so sorry to bother you, but I cannot find episode 1....have u upload it & maybe it is under a different name? If not, where can I find it or will you be uploading it anytime? Please, please let me know. I am dying to see it from the start, therefore, it's been really hard holding off veiwing ep 2, 3 & 4.

    Thx!

  • I uploaded episode 1 on my channel :)

  • Thank you so much!

  • Hahaha. "Ship-court!" :D

  • Thank you so much for posting this. It's great. :)

  • I was ecstatic when I saw that you had uploaded the second episode!!! I was going nuts just watching little snippets of the 2nd and 3rd episodes...now I can enjoy the rest of this wonderful rendition :D

  • Thank you sooo much for uploading! :D

  • Thanks so much for uploading this second episode. I've been waiting for it. I live in the States (Illinois), so it won't be here probably 'til next year. Love Jonny Lee Miller!
