i absolutely hated the version with gwyneth paltrow! i do not like her at all! but Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightly was excellent, i absolutely loved him. i love this version! it's more spirited than any other version i've seen. I love Romala's and JLM's interaction with each other
@primavera331 I completely agree. I was trying to figure out just the other day how many Mr. Knightley's I know and how many Mr. Eltons. I know way too many Mr. Eltons
One thing I like about communities with close family ties is that romance isn't nearly as important. When you live in an extended family and close community your relational needs are met from so many different angles - whereas when you get seperated from that - romance/marriage is all you really have and your husband becomes so much more important to that area of your life. It ends up hanging off him which puts way more pressure on a relationship then is really, optimunly healthy.
I like Gywneths emma because she's very classy and her portrayal is far closer to the original character in my opinion. she 'is' a gentlemans daughter where as Romolas approach is more spontaneous and fun. I like both but I think Gywneths version is more accurate and elegant.
Romola Garai is simply fantastic in The BBC's The Crimson Petal and the White, a gutsy Victorian period piece, where she plays 'Sugar' a 17 year old bangtail (prostitute). I HIGHLY recommend it!It too is on YouTube!!!
when emma first gets introduced to mr. martin, her facial expressions said it all perfectly...romala garai's version of emma is the best! thanks for sharing.
I rewatched this now and I am now inclined to like this adaptation best of all. Ramola was fabulous. Gwyneth is a fine actrees but she really doesn't do Emma justice, not like Ramola.
I like that in this version Isabella and her husband play more important roles, that they actually appear in scenes and talk and such. You hardly see them in the other version!
Ramola Garai is the very essence of Emma! I'm very impressed, to be honest it is my least favourite Jane Austen Book, and after reading it I immediately watched the Gwenth Paltrow version and it didn't help. But this version is simply amazing.
I know some find Romola Garai's portrayal annoying and so on, but Emma is not meant to be be perfect! She is meant to be irritatingly stubborn and sometimes ridiculous: yet somehow very endearing at the same time. That is the beauty of her character - that and her journey from spoilt child to fine young woman. She is not exactly a character you can admire, but you still find her very likable. Romola Garai portrays this perfectly, and her facial expressions are nothing less than priceless!
this version is my favorite "Emma" however my favorite miniseries is North and South (2007) but this is definitely 2nd followed closely by P&P miniseries (1995)!!
I find it funny that the wise Albus Dumbledore is now the well meaning but foolish Mr. Woodhouse. I lke how he is portrayed in this movie, it shows that it was his wife's death that brought so much fear in sickness and death.
@rking87 Actually Mr. Woodhouse was a hypochondriac when his wife was still alive. You can see it at the beginning where he keeps tucking blankets around baby Emma in the buggy with his wife looking on and smiling about it..
I like this Emma better than Gwyneth, but Keira Knightley would be the real perfect Emma. And, in fact, Emma has been written after Pride & Prejudice, and ought to be a better version of Elizabeth Bennet. Elizabeth and Emma are much alike, but Emma has more freedome, more money and has no wisdom at all, just like Lizzy in the first place. Keira would have played Emma perfect.
@Ceetje69 In those times, it was the hostess's duty that everything "went off without a hitch" at a dinner with guests. She had lost control of the situation and Mr. Knightley kindly stepped in to change the grumpy atmosphere.
The only objection I have with this version is that Mr. Knightley is supposed to be a number of years older than Emma, is he not? Johnny Lee Miller is just a wee bit young methinks, but he *is* wonderful eye-candy. ;)
I think this whole production is fabulous; it is my favorite among the three adaptations. Personally, I don't see the great draw with the Gwyneth version - she just doesn't do the character of Emma justice. I'll admit that the other cast members are quite good - Jeremy Northham was a fantastic Mr. Knightley. But Romala Garai's acting, presence, and facial expressions are priceless!
I love this Emma and the latest Pride and Prejudice movie (2005). I even prefer it to the - dare I say - television adaptation itself. I prefer the actors and they style. Am I alone in this idea?
I could dissect this production for all its faults for days, but I have to say I'm amazed that they've chosen to make Elton a handsome and agreeable man--and not the usual fawning, blathering or pompous dope of a clergyman that is usually in these Austen novels-turned-movie.... Anyone know if Jane Austen had something against the C of E? lol.
@nauort23 Please share your dissecion with us! I'm so excited to find out what other people think about this adaptation! I haven't quite made up my mind, I haven't watched the whole thing yet...
Just as soon as I finish fighting with someone else who says that my petty criticisms don't matter! I'll say this: one of Jane Austen's unique and strongest talents was her ability to express so much love/hate/passion/etc. in a story where characters never so much as lay a finger on another person or raise their voices. Her books are masterpieces of subtlety. I don't feel this production, with its "eye-rolling" and brash, smart-assedness, really captures that finest gift of Jane Austen.
My favorite production of an Austen novel is Persuasion (1995) w/ Amanda Root. I also like the Pride and Prejudice BBC miniseries from the same year. I've yet to see an Emma I love. I'll get hissed and boo-ed off YT for saying I truly enjoyed Clueless, I'm sure, but I think if one's going to throw out much of Austen's dialogue and play with the era of the story to make it more palatable to today's audience, THAT movie got the spirit of Emma much better than some of these BBC prig-fests.
I actually like Clueless too, despite -- some parts of it work better than others, but I think it has captured something at the core of Emma. As spin-offs go it's a great success. I like Persuasion too, and P&P, though I can't help feeling that it is a litle overrated as THE best Austen adaption. There's so much cult around it. Have you seen alla the Emmas (BBC 1972, ITV 1996, McGrath 1996)?
I think you're right about the cult of P&P ('95); maybe one of the reasons it's rated so highly is its faithfulness to the novel. I thought the Beckinsale Emma was much better than the others I've seen--which would be all except the BBC '72. Do you recommend it? Please elaborate on your "despite" re: Clueless. I just can't ignore it! lol
I do most decidedly and emphaically NOT recommend it. I mean you can watch it if you like, of course, but I don't think it will be a very positive experience. Very wordy, but very little of the original dialogue left. You didn't get the feeling that anyone in the production took the story seriously, but it wasn't funny. The worst of two worlds, really. And I really do like P&P a lot, I'm just a bit uncomfortable about its extreme cult status.
I wrote "despite" because I started to add something but then changed my mind because I realised it didnt make sense, and I guess I forgot to delete it. It really doen't matter, I can't even remember what I was going to say.
@nauort23 I actually saw Clueless before I read/watched Emma. I'll always adore Clueless. I think they did a fantastic job. I agree the Amanda Root Persuasion is wonderful. P&P miniseries is my favourite adaptation of them all.
@billiebutton18 Wow, our taste in Jane Austen adaptations are very similar. Please make recommendations, as there are several newer (and older) versions that I haven't seen.
Treblemaker... I think so too. I ride and either that horse is flighty, he is a bad rider or it is uncomfortable doing something. Also he is cantering downhill, which is dangerous. But oh well.
@DWFAN20 you are not the only one! i have both versions of Mansfield Park, and i laugh everytime i see this movie! personally i think Blake Ritson played a better Edmund than Johnny Lee Miller.
@DWFAN20 it is, although I think the man who plays my elton is even better in this role. he does the slightly comic and satirical really well. i think it's pretty hard to be an austen hero.
I feel as though if I had lived during this time period, I would be exactly like this Emma. So many times people from period drams are portrayed stuffily and although many were like that, I just can't help but imagine that there were a few high energy people like myself, who just could not be contained!
Once again, thank you for the hard work in uploading this. I may not enjoy the production as I do the older versions, but I want to express my gratitude in the fact that I'm able to watch this at all! :)
Hi - so sorry to bother you, but I cannot find episode 1....have u upload it & maybe it is under a different name? If not, where can I find it or will you be uploading it anytime? Please, please let me know. I am dying to see it from the start, therefore, it's been really hard holding off veiwing ep 2, 3 & 4.

Thanks so much for uploading this second episode. I've been waiting for it. I live in the States (Illinois), so it won't be here probably 'til next year. Love Jonny Lee Miller!

Once again, thank you for the hard work in uploading this. I may not enjoy the production as I do the older versions, but I want to express my gratitude in the fact that I'm able to watch this at all! :)

Blake Ritson looks hot! I didn't like him in MP but do here.

He's hot in general, whether it be in MP or not. But yes, his performance in MP is much worse than Johnny's!

Thanks so much for uploading this second episode. I've been waiting for it. I live in the States (Illinois), so it won't be here probably 'til next year. Love Jonny Lee Miller!
