What a great bird…at my old place I had a pair of kookaburras that would come and hand feed like that, each year they would bring their young when they were brave enough.
Next year they brought their babies! I can also hear the currawong, his song is pretty ugly :) At least I remember the magpie song being more melodious. or am I wrong?
@ozsfi Hi and thanks for your comments, yep a little wrong is a magpie, they often wait around for any scraps, sometimes attack the kookaburras too..not a nice bird!
People mean well, but it's too easy to over feed a bird. I used to put a feeder out in the winter and I'd sometimes see dead birds around it. Then one night I had a vision of a bird in a straight jacket and feces shot out of his butt. I woke up and realized that those birds were dying because they were eating way more food than their digestive systems could handle. So they died painful deaths!
If you want to do something wonderful for birds, put a big glass bowl of clean water out ever day...!
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree Merry, merry king of the bush is he Laugh, Kookaburra! Laugh, Kookaburra! Gay your life must be Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree Eating all the gum drops he can see Stop, Kookaburra! Stop, Kookaburra! Leave some there for me Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree Counting all the monkeys he can see Stop, Kookaburra! Stop, Kookaburra! That's not a monkey, that's me!
awesome, i always used to have 2 kukaburras come to my balcony every afternoon wanting some food. After a while they let me pat them and even give their belly a scratch! I named them bruno and aggamemnon.
If you haven't been to Australia, this happens a lot. Magpies, kookaburras, lorikeets and crows if you're lucky will often visit you on your back verandah and you can chat with them and give them food if you want. Currawongs are friggin stupid but
aww he is lovely :) we feed the magpies with mince that come to our house!! they learn that there is always going to be food hehe so everytime they come they expect it :)
There were several of them always flying about, and landing in the trees, so started throwing bits of meat on to the lawn , and they would fly doen and pick up.......over several weeks would throw the bits closer to the house...then eventually placed some meat on the veranda, and they picked that up too.
Weeks went by and they now let me hand feed them , all a matter of trust I suppose.
Wow, these guys are cute. They have such big heads! They look like cartoon characters. Bet they are smart too, seeing as they eat meat, and hence, have to hunt.
They are a Kingfisher, actually, as far as I am aware they are the only Kingfisher that has adapted so that they don't fish anymore! They live on rodents, snakes, lizards, insects and eggs. Also, they turn up wherever people picnic or camp in the bush. A wild one took a bread roll out of my hand one day while we were camping, just as I had taken a bite...
That is amazing! None of our Kingfisher here are that bold! But they are a joy to watch out on the river. I especially adore their cries as they sound like they're laughing. They don't sound as cool as a Kookaburra, but they are neat all the same! Thanks dude!
LOL with the 2nd peice he's like .."....whats this? you give me a large one and NOW you give me a smaller one? whattaya take me for mate?!?...JEEZ,.. "
We have one that my dad feeds every night. They're great creatures. My favorite thing is watching them bang the food against the tree to see if it's got bones or not.
Thanks for your comments, probably will have to go back to catching mice and small snakes and lizards etc.....but when having visitors the children love feeding him, so will keep it up for awhile.
Thanks for the comment, they don`t eat bird seed, only meat and fish...get stir fry meat when on special at the supermarket, only a few dollars for a couple of weeks
