We think that because there's not much traffic her goal is to interleave the cars as much as possible and keep everyone moving - which is why she spins around madly checking in every direction. In a way, it's better than our system of everyone waits a few minutes then everyone goes for a few minutes. Remember there is no private car ownership so most cars are on government business - mustn't hold up the machinery of state!

I've never seen a North Korean police car before, I especially wasn't expecting them to drive around in quite tidy looking Mercedes Benz 260Es, being all 'western' and 'decadent' as they are, or were.

They weren't with our group but there were lots of tourists in Pyongyang at this time as it was the first Mass Games for a few years due to the flooding. The guides will be close by, but believe it or not they do give their tourists a few metres of space. The privileged locals in Pyongyang seemed to be fairly used to Westerners and keen to talk to them. Outside Pyongyang it was different.

Believe it or not you can spend your vacation in North Korea as a foreigner. You have your own tourist guide though, who controls where you go and there is of course more paperwork to go through.

The female traffic officers are a common part of the "extensive" North Korean sight seeing tour btw.

The tour though is very restricted and most of the sight seeing is in pyongyang because it is the north koreans idea of a utopia. This video is not fake.
