It sounds smooth to me, The little tdi is pretty quiet for a car with no muffler. lets see a gasser do that. Also it is going to be a very inexpensive exhaust system to upkeep :-)
I would rather start with a cheap 90hp car and build it to make 150hp myself instead of buying a car with all the tuning done. To each his own. I bet you can pick up some hot guys in an S2000 though, if you're into that scene.
What does the 17/52 sound like? I want the hammerhead sv for my passat so I can have a general idea. BTW how in the hell can you compare a 1.9 TDI (4000rpm) to an F20 that revs 9 grand. Come on, if you want I'll run you with my dads Carrera GT. Thats the kind of comparison that was implied. S2000 are nice tho.
My ride sounds with a lower tone from the turbo's whistle (most likely a truck), but is louder than yours... obviously a 2.4T with 3" cutout and TD04L turbo makes it louder. Good video mate.

VeeDubs are SLOW im sorry i dont car who you are, and the s2000 if its done up is a bad ass car stock it aint got nothin, as for yor golf ill line up against it ne day and do what i always do leave ya in the rearview!!!
You realize this is a Diesel right? The purpose of which isn't for performance but economy. Do you know what diesel is or are you afraid of it like every other ignorant "gasser."
@haraldb89 Context, my friend; I was referring to the 1.9L TDI. Did it win Lemans? The purpose of the 1.9L TDI is economy (Stock: 90HP, 150lbs/trq). While it can be modified to perform very well (like mine, now), it was never intended to be a racer. Context is everything. If I was speaking for every diesel engine ever made, then perhaps I would have said so, but when responding to a comment about my 1.9L TDI, I thought some things could go without saying.
@tomz24cavi really line up in what? i tell you what vws are faster than you thik go line up to a r32 and see what happens better yet a vr6, have fun, ontop of that if your car has a shit ton of work done to it then duh but run it stock and you will get moped up.
sweet sound... i've been trying to find a decently priced used vw tdi -- by that I mean that I do not want to pay more than the car was worth when new...
TDI stands for Turbo Direct-Injection which is usually only seen on diesel engines, save for two gas engines; VW's 2.0FSI and BMW's 35i Engines (335i, 535i) which are both direct-injection.
um yea Corky, turbo-back straight pipe means that from the turbo back the pipe is straight, well at least for the most part... and you, a beetle response to a veyron?? c'mon, no comparision
Yeah, I posted it cause I thought they sounded similar and I found that humorous, they have the same exhaust "burble" and if you think about it they're almost opposites in form and function :)
Try getting true sound on with YouTube video quality, the bass goes out. This video is more for the turbo whistle. In-gear the low end grumble on this thing is nice. Some guy asked me if I had a V8 in it the other day, I just laughed and told him it was a diesel.
Yea dude the more i drive my car withouyt the mufflers the more i love the sound! IUts crazy though. When your at a stop light and pull off people are like wtf from that car? Becuase it sounds like a big ass duramax or something. With these turbo diesels though their just loud enough to be awesome but not loud enough to be like "crap im so getting pulled over"
Yeah, I know what you mean. I live in a Southern California college town where there are a lot of imports like WRX's, 240's and Type-R's so it's nice to have something so unique and it definitely turns heads.
Can you actually take off the muffler and the catalytic converter without causing problems? I have a 1998 VW TDI Beetle and I want to bring out the sound of the engine and the turbo more. I just want to take off the muffler, will that cause any problems or sacrifice anything that I am not aware of?
I would recommend you check out TDIClub (dot com) You can learn about performance as well as maintenance and economy. It's a great resource and you'll be glad you joined.
As far as removing your muffler, it won't hurt anything. You must be aware of your local laws, however, because if you live in an area where you have annual vehicle inspections you won't pass without a muffler.
I've never heard any turbodiesel lawnmowers with mufflers removed. And no, it does not sound like a small gas engine. It sounds like a big turbodiesel without a muffler.
Well technically the downpipe is stock. The sound is different because I took off the Catalytic Converter and the Muffler, so there is nothing to muffle the sound from the Turbo all the way back; it's just a straight pipe.
nice i have a 2000 TDI beetle i got rid of the exhaust few years back and have been wanted to get rid of the cat.. has it caused the MIL light to come on?
its a shame it revs to like 1.5 grand... lol. (dont take that serisiouly) if all i were was about power than i woudlent mind but i love high reving cars (S2000 like my 05 silverstone with red and black interior)
well my s2000 put 229 to the wheels in 81 degree weather... with 161 ft lbs of torque... and the tires im running pick up like crazy... i dont think i would run on me... it would be interesting tho. and if it did, id respect that car. i run a 13.8 constantly. 13.1 on slciks
The s2000 is designed for the curves, but its not shabby in a straight line either. The mazda mx5, on the other hand, is strictly a "handling" car, where as the s2000 does both pretty well
I have a 2000 Jetta TDI. I have cut off the muffler off and left the catalytic on. my question is if I cut the catalytic off will the car stel run good ?
I've got a 2003 S2000 too - and if you actually read the literature, it has 158 pound feet of torque. Laugh at that all you want - try to make your diesel got 0-60 in 5.1seconds. Then again, the point of a diesel is economy, so I don't know why people are talking about this
I think a stock TDI is rated in the 7's for 0-60. So... add a chip, a bigger/free-flowing exhaust and intake, and turn up the injection pump you can probably push high 5's. And if you go bigger turbo and injectors I'm sure it could go in 5. All while still getting twice as many mpg as an S2000.
A tdi with a turbo.. who would of guessed. Haha
