@TakeAShowerStinky Bruce Lee was very arrogant and I was telling my wife the other day that he would have taken away the depth of character that David brought to the movie. I could just see Bruce's face trying to act all peaceful. I've watched him explain his Tao like thoughts and saw how arrogant he was. Thank GOD that he wasn't allowed to act take David's place in the movie! He would have made fighting the more important aspect, not compassion and caring which is what we really needed to see.
@qualitydag1. Complete agree. Plus, the show would have been canceled after three episodes. Rick Shaw Boy Bruce Lee was a fighter not an actor. Good riddance to Bruce Lee and his LOSER supporters!
I agree with you. As much as Bruce Lee contributed to martial arts, he would not have been suitable for the role. And as someone who has practiced both traditional styles and styles for cage fighting, I can honestly say that Carradine gave his character a serenity and depth Lee would not have conveyed---it would have been too intense, not as nuanced. Even Carradine's performance of Bill in Kill Bill was multi-dimensional.

Does anyone here remember the episode where Kane fights Ah Kwon(forgive the spelling)? A sub plot was a guy named Chen who was after a child Kane was protecting. He attacked Kane and he "plucked Chen's hatchet from the air. Ah Kwon was a feared killer and he shoots Kane in the back with a bow & arrow. I sure somebody can get and post that episode.
@in2food "The Tong" is a particular favorite; the episode is available on this site.
It's just a brilliant piece. Notice that Ah Kwon is played by the same actor who opened up the temple gate for the boys in the opening sequence for the pilot..
@gildone84 ...no, that is incorrect. The studio suits adjusted the background story so they could explain why the main character did not look Chinese. Back in 1970's it was not felt that the American audience would not so easily accept a Asian actor as the main character of a American TV show.
I completely concur with a number of the comments here. I loved this show, and also found a sense of spirituality and personal values in it that I never forgot. I went on in my life to become a language professor and successful Japanese/Korean translator, living and travelling for many years in Asia--this show affected the decisions that led to the life I have come to live. Thanks to David Carradine for the impact he had on so many of us growing up in the 70s.
According to Carradine.......the original screenplay of Kung Fu, was written by a caucasian guy in New York who fantasized about being allowed (as a white person) to join a Chinese Monastery to be taught Kung Fu. Now...if that's the truth, then Bruce Lee would certainly be passed over for the starring role....yes.....because of his race (but not because of racism).
@maxred222 I agree. Plus the show's emphasis was more on dialog than combat scenes, and therefore not really playing to Bruce Lee's strengths. (I like Bruce Lee by the way - I'm not putting him down - just acknowledging that his acting range was arguably limited to the aforementioned combat scenes.)
those are legends i hawe watced intervies with executive producers and other hollywood celebrities when they disgus these issue and it iss so well known ewen in holly wood that ho a dancer got a role that was created for bruce to play there is nothing to disguss it it is so well known fakt that in holly wood there is no doubt in movie bizn peoples mind how the story goes and belive me they know that better peace

That might not bode well with die hard Lee fans, but you do have a point.
There's a lot of talk about how good Lee would do in the cage/mat/Dojo and on the street because most of the tales spread around are largely conversation, not much *actual* fighting video outside of film itself. As good as Lee presented himself in the movies, the fact remains that how amazing he was of a fighter is still speculation outside of accounts and word of mouth.
@Wytchfinde Agreed. Bruce was a good actor (who could have developed into a great actor if given the time) and was very good at portraying martial arts and choreography. But there's the difference between cinema and sports: if I watch a movie, I'd like to watch an actor not a fighter - if I want to see a fighter, I go watch them in the ring.
The opposite goes for Chuck Norris - great martial artists (40 years ago) but on screen: mostly unwatchable!
Fact: the Kung Fu series concept was created by Bruce Lee who was passed up for the lead part due to his race. David Caradine who possessed no talent as a martial artist got the part as a half Chinese/half Occidental because the producers felt this would hold more commercial potential. Result: a mere joke compared to what the series was first intended to be by its creator,...Mr Lee.
It was a very smart idea of the producers to send a spiritual message through a western set up. Kuang Chaing search for his brother was the search for himself. The story inspired me to look for balance, harmony and wisdom...

David often courted controversy during his life and so it is now also in death.
For myself , a child of the 70's , Kwai Chang Caine was my first appreciation of David through the magnificence of that particular role and its influence on a whole generation.
However ,in life , David was definitely far more complex than his portrayal of the Shaolin Priest.
Thank You David. We will miss you terribly. Your message of humble enlightenment and peace inspired me as a child watching your Kung Fu. I always felt so at peace when watching. Your example made those that listened better than we were. Farewell.
Thank you all for your kind thoughts. I'm sure that Uncles family would be as comforted as his Kung Fu Lineage is, by your heartfelt laments. He inspired us all, 3 generations at least, to walk the path of The Way. Love Peace & Harmony
Bless you, David. I've followed your career for most of my life. When I heard the news, I shouted and cried. We'll all miss you and what you brought to us. Bless you and find peace, my friend.
I'm soooo upset...soooo sad...:( He will always be remembered...as i listened to this beautiful song...i remember him and i remember my childhood.... i wish holliwood make movies like KUNG FU were american families are taught great values...God bless you Mister Carradine and your family and rest in peace.we all love you.
Tu leyenda continuara siempre.. por tu personaje Kwai Chang Caine yo me hice budista y segui la senda del Sahollin.. has marcado mi vida... OM MANI PADME HUM
Rest in peace David, Man i whistled the whole of the theme tune, I hadnt heard it since back in the day, great classic television great actor sad end!
For all te crappy movies he made ,his work in the original Kung Fu tv series(not the crappy90's remake) was one of the best performances in tv.All you kids out there, get the dvd's of the original series;it's something special;philosophy, great actors, great writing, and always a little martial arts kickass at the end. Only quality Kung Fu entertainment ever done.
He got the pebble from his masters hand. I have read some who made fun of Kung Fu, but for it's day it was new, and a peaceful change of pace to the regular fare of shoot em up shows. Carradine will always be cool to me.
Sad sad news I'm in shock and very very upset to hear the news of Davids passing. He was never meant to live in these times and should really have been the character he played in Kung Fu. He was an inspiration and such a gentle man. I'll say a prayer for him. God bless you David we'll all miss Grasshopper !

Thank You David. We will miss you terribly. Your message of humble enlightenment and peace inspired me as a child watching your Kung Fu. I always felt so at peace when watching. Your example made those that listened better than we were. Farewell.

I feel sorry for the guy, but his CV of movies over the past year look very ominous::::::
Hell Ride
Son of the Dragon
Last Hour
Death Race
My Suicide
Absolute Evil
!!!!!
No kidding, just look at his filmography on Wikipedia.
Weird or what???
cloverfield911 2 years ago
For all te crappy movies he made ,his work in the original Kung Fu tv series(not the crappy90's remake) was one of the best performances in tv.All you kids out there, get the dvd's of the original series;it's something special;philosophy, great actors, great writing, and always a little martial arts kickass at the end. Only quality Kung Fu entertainment ever done.

One of the best shows of all time. Very Spock-like for all you trekkies. The entire series is available free at:

providing you have good pop-up/virus protection.
