you have to consider that most of the effects of the MM series refer to the cinema more than fifteen years ago. Today's technology and approach have changed radically in the world of special effects. Today I believe that computer graphics represents 90% of special effects.

@Mykelus Contrary to popular belief, there is far more of a balance to computer/physical effects. Most big-budget movies have a mixture of computer and physical effects, only turning to a computer where the physical isn't viable. Computer effects have replaced most needs for miniatures, hand drawn rotoscoping effects, etc... but character effects have always looked more realistic with a good special effects artist compared to computer imagery.
