  • It is really not the story of the son, Gogol, but rather the parents - as they are for whom it is dedicated - and indeed Irfan and Tabu are just perfect, wonderful in this role. Best film ever. And I am Hungarian btw...

  • this book sucks

  • actually max's parents were survivors of a plane crash, and decided to name their daughter "Max" so that she would make the most out of each day. But we're all judgemental aren't we... 0:44

  • tabu is the finest actress. she deserved at least an oscar best actress nomination for this role

  • Great book, great movie.

  • the book keeps me awake all the time

BUT this movie made me fall asleep every 2mins

i shouldnt have watched this movie before reading

    What a disaster!

  • FFS! why cant the book be as interesting as this trailer!

and the guy who plays Gogol! F'ing LOVE him! he's so awesome,

i haven't seen the movie and im 90% sure he is what makes the movie! :D

  • @YesILoveMyMusic Eh, Kal Penn actually ruins the movie. He's not good at dramatic roles. Irrfan Khan and Tabu (the actors who play his parents) steal the show and are the best thing about the movie.

  • @astala101 You know, i actually agree with Kal Penn not being good at dramatic roles. Because i watched it and at the point where he's talkin to mushimi and she admits she's cheating, that didnt seem natural enough.

The parents were better actors, they did make the movie more realistic.

At the end of the day, good story :) Although the fact that it is used in the HSC as a concept of belonging is kinda sucky.

  • @YesILoveMyMusic Well obviously Mira Nair disagrees with you because she cast Kal Penn to be the star of the movie. Kal Penn was impressive in this movie. I think some people just want to typecast Kal as a comedic actor. However, I was personally impressed with the depth of feeling and expression he had in the dramatic scenes inthe movie.

  • @JordanjamesX Well he certainly is a good actor, and I've seen him in a lot of things. I know he's the star of the show, which is AWESOME! but it just wasn't his best acting in the scene before, other than that, he was perfect in this movie :)

and besides, it doesn't bother me, that it wasn't his best acting in that scene, cause really, he is human, and no one can give 100% all the time :) LOOOOVEEEE Kal Pen! :)

  • we are reading this book in my english class, i am half way through the book. i cannot wait to finish the book and watch this movie :D

  • I really relate to the film, I am a mix myself but mostly because I hate my first name with a passion. I have gone by my middle name since I was a kid and want to change it legally.

  • I love this movie and the message it brings. I am Filipino, Spanish and Italian. I can relate to the character's emotions. I am an American born citizen from ethnic heritage. This movie speaks to me and my memories of my dad. How he loved me and wanted the best for me. Bravo, Kal Penn for making this statement.

    rjarcusa

  • Definitely one of my top 10 favorite movies. I'm Puerto Rican but I feel like anyone can relate to this movie. "Remember that you and I made this journey and went together to a place where there was nowhere left to go."

  • fuckin bullshit

  • Man!! Who is putting this book on university course! All my school life I grew up reading Shakespeare.

  • This was such an amazing movie, easily one of the best of all time. It had everything a story needs; characters that we can relate to, familiar and coherent story-line...truly existential through the eyes of a Bengali family. Jhumpa Lahiri's books were good, but the movie was also really well done.

  • we're reading this book in school i didnt want to ruin it by watchin the whole movie so i just watched the trailer it looks sooo gud

  • good movie,great actors,beautiful women.

  • terriblle trailer

  • I have to see this because the book is so awesome it's not even funny. I'm going to see it ^_^

  • I'm reading this book and then movie next

  • I had no idea they had made a movie! The book is fantastic - even juggling it between work and class, I managed to finish the book in three days, I was so caught up in it. The film looks wonderfully done; I'll be looking forward to renting it. :)

  • @migellejones I read the book as part of my university course, and we were shown the ending (which, I won't spoil it for you, is a bit different than the novel). I'm currently working on an essay based on the novel that traces the generation gap present throughout the story. Not done yet though!

  • @0soadfan0

It seemed to focus on the family in general, but I thought the narrative definitely tends to center on Gogol toward the latter half of the book. He represents the bridge between American youth and the Bengali history of his parents, which ties the entire novel together, so it seemed fitting toward the end.

  • This Was A Really Nice Movie

  • I haven't seen this but I'm guessing it has something to do with Gandhi? cos he shaves his hair :S

  • @nafisa02 nope. it's in bengali family tradition to shave your head if a man in the family passes away (in this case, his father)

  • @pbfreak11 wow I'm bangladeshi and didn't know that... but thanks :)

  • Beautiful story, endlessly moving film.

  • such an underrated movie

  • Haha Tabu as the mom? Seriously? Dangg i thought she would be playing the sister or something =P

  • I related so much to this movie - one reason was my parents named me after this character in a novel - I always hated it since people could rarely pronounce it right (hell, I don't even like the proper pronounciation!) so I've gone by my middle name since I was a kid. I really want to change it legally...

  • It's idiotic how in some interracial relationships have to go threw so many complications with different cultures, beliefs ETC. Parents can make the complications way worse @ tht too. I wish people of different races could date 1 another without any judgment from their own families or society itself. Who cares if u date sum1 is a differnt race than you. people should see past color. And look more into how much people love 1 another.

  • loooks like a lame love story... is this movie worth wwatching?

  • @lexmark136 Oh it's so much more than a love story! It's about identity. You should definitely watch it!

  • This film was so awesome, like in another level of awesomeness...underrated awesomeness.

  • This trailer sucks... This makes the movie looks like something dumb and about a guy with many girls... The movie is not about that...

  • @okojo9 No, I haven't seen the movie or read the book yet and I'm interested in watching after seeing this. Perhaps the movie was just so good that it didn't live up to your raised standards.

  • Tabu is amazing <3

  • Wow. this is one of my all time favorite movies.Mira Nair is a genuis every movie she makes is gold.

  • I have to read this book for school, but so far, I love it! I fully plan on watching the movie once I'm done! Looks great! And I love Kal Penn as an actor!

  • Seen it for the first time today, just adored it. What a gem of a movie, very moving, tearful.

  • Can anyone tell me the name of that piece of music starting from 0:58 to 1:29 ? Pleeaaaase !!!! (For LOST Fans, you can also hear it in the Lost 3x16 One Of Us ABC Promo!)

  • I just started the book and I'm fucking bummed to see how Gogol is acting as an adult. But then, I'm realizing that I'm the same way with my heritage. I've completely dismissed it....

  • BEST MOVIE EVER! I recomend it too anyone and everyone!

  • its in bengalii!!!!!!!! woooohooo

  • i cried...T_T

    damn this awesome movie!

  • I freakin love this movie!! Its really good. I recommend it :D

  • this is like in my top 5 all time favorite movies.

  • I'm reading this book right now for my AP Composition and Language class, and I'm surprised how good it is! I recommend everyone to read it. The details that Jhumpa Lahiri put into it are amazing and very authentic.

  • i thought this was an amazing movie :) i watched it a few years ago and i still watch it sometimes during the weekends. alot of these indian movies that arent so well konwn are amazing. american desi was great too if you want comedy.

  • Irfan Khan is a great actor! I always hear about other Bollywood actors who were well known for good acting! Amitabh Nachchan, SRK Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Shahid Kapoor..... but I don't hear much glamor from Irfan. Sure he's credited in a few movies. slumdog Millionaire, Billu... but really I think he deserves more credit! :-)

  • I baught the book on Wednesday. Haven't had the chance to start reading it yet. But after seeing the movie trailer, I want to hurry up and read this book. And when I'm finished I'll watch the movie! :-) Cuz they always say the book is better than the movie, and the trailer to the movie really looks good! So the book must be AMAZING!

  • I would give anything to have a father like gogol...smh he didn't know how good he had it.

  • Anyone know what music is being played at 01:52 ?

  • @Hax9 the song immediate music- World apart

  • Thanks mate... funny story.. I've asked about another music from a trailer I saw of The Aviator and that was by Immediate Music too... They are great !

  • does anyone know what's the name of the song in 0:22 ? pleaseeee..

  • Awesome movie, AMAZING book.

  • I think you can watch l this f!lm @ MOOV ZON, COM just google for the link above

  • This movie is amazing. I loved it so much! And the actor of Gogol (kal pen?) is so good and moving.

I didn't know it was a book though. On my way to buy it! :)

  • I highly suggest picking the book up if you enjoyed the move. I have yet to see the film adaption, but recently was assigned to read the book as part of a class on blues literature. The concept of Gogol struggling with double consciousness is very intriguing, and I am currently working on a huge paper on that very idea. Please read the book...it is most excellent.

  • could you please explain a little bit about what double consciousness is? It sounds familiar to me.

  • hey iam writing an about this myself and maybe you can give me some feedback or idea i will really appriaciate that

  • irrfan khan-tabu..lethal..and the background score is so freakin brilliant!..super movie..watch it

  • this film is over a year old-such a great, powerful and moving story!

    kal penn is great

  • Irfan Khan is probably one of the most talented actors we have in our industry..

  • I acutally think they did a very good job transitioning the book into a movie. Yeah, a few facts were skewed, but all the major (and some of the minor) scenes were there. Kalpen is AMAZING as Gogol. I fell in love with him in this role.

  • irfan khan owned this movie

  • this has to be my favorite movie!

  • the book is ten times better

    you should read it

  • I have the book but I haven't finished reading it yet!

but yes, it is a lot better than the movie.

  • a frog irland family is that a name?

  • um....no. it's afro girl and family

  • Thousand splendid suns is a good book, very.

But you can't compare them, they are completely different backgrounds and on a different basis, and seriously you can't compare them. Not the same aspects of life

  • I thought it funny to see Kal Penn smoking again. It took me 14 hours to read the book, and 2 hours to see the movie. A good 14 and 2 hours though. But I thought Gogol's problems were trivial compared to another book I read. A Thousand Splendid Suns. All three characters lost their parents except Gogol with her mom still alive, and though Gogol had heart breaks and affairs behind his back, the characters Mariam and Laila could not choose the husband. And were forced to wed a control freak.

  • @blueberrylesbian You cannot compare A thousand Splendid sun with Namesake. They completely different story line, pathos, background and content. One is set in war ravaged Afghanistan and one is a story of an immigrant family.

  • I know they have different backgrounds and different settings. The one thing I found similar is that they both have conflicts--Of course every book has conflicts or it would not be a book much less a movie-- I just think Gogol should not have been bitching about how annoying his name affects his life, (had he been real) when there ARE women and children being locked up in a house as if they did not have a name.

On le contrary, Gogol never experienced those sufferings, so is he innocent Sinpli?

  • very good movie, too bad it wasn't advertised much =(

  • I mean, could you be more ignorant? Are you going to a Klan meeting after this?

  • the movie made me cry. i love it so much.

  • What's the music beginning at 1:50 ? Pleaseeeeeeeeeeee!!

  • I ordered this from netlifx, should be getting it today. The thing that attractas me most of the trailer is that I feel some of the things can be for any ethnic background. The clip at 1:00 has happened to me many times, and I was born in new york.

  • this movie is stunning.. i gonna say

  • the book is more stunning

  • If you have not seen this movie....please do. It is absolutely awesome!!! its the same caliber as "The Fall" or "The Kite Runner"...

  • @nofx77j3 who is THE FALL by?

  • I love this movie. I'm reading the book now!

  • I watched this movie last night. It kept me up until 5am and I absolutely loved it. I am going to purchase the book next so I can actually read it.

  • very good book, apparently i look like a younger version of the moshumi character ..alot like her. If i do wouldn't be the worst thing i suppose :) This is such a relatable story for me especially and many other 2nd gen bengali's

  • Beautiful film. Absolutely loved it!

  • "The Overcoat" by Nicolaj Vasilievic Gogol

  • Whats the book called?

  • ....

  • the mother singing in the end,

    so amazingly beautiful <3

  • yeah!!

  • I LOVED IT!!!

  • This movie made me bawl. It was majestic.

Honestly, one of my favourite movies. So powerful.

  • Tell me about it! Afterwards, I rushed to hug my mom and dad. This was such a beautiful, evocative film about the immigrant experience, and the generational differences that can arise from it among parents and children. Lovely, lovely piece of filmmaking. Mira Nair and her entire cast did an outstanding job.

  • @KingLouieXVIII I can't wait to watch it! Have you read the book? it's soooo good, I swear! This story's such a masterpiece, it makes me wonder what life was like for both my parents and grandparents when they emmigrated from Haiti, and made it to America.

  • amazing...

  • that movie was SO good... it made me CRY!

  • Is the moive out yet if some can tell me

  • of course!! ... long time back! .. get it on eBay or Netflix.

  • If you liked the movie, you'll love the book. Its so much more descriptive and its free for your own interpretation

  • Definitly read the book first, author Jhumpa Lahiri is so descriptive...The movie is good, but the book is amazing!

  • The book is okay. It might have been good if not for how amazing Interpreter of Maladies is!

  • search it on torrents. Download U torrent and then google Namesake on torrents. Open the file with the U torrent program, wiat until it finished downloading, and u have the movie

  • the trailer gives me goosebumps everytime...

    specially when irrfan khan says

'every second has been a gift, gogol'

hes getting an oscar one day!

  • omg...i feel the same always i swear.

irffan ia amazing...kal penns a good actor too :D

  • and not to forget tabu...she was great!!!

  • the Movie was more intriguing ... kinda 'beat the book', as they say.

  • A brilliant film !! one of the best !!

  • this makes me want to finish the book right now

  • GOGOL :D

  • Irfan Khan reminded me of my father so much, this movie was so moving.

  • anybody knows ?what are the tracknames at the end from the movie(credits)

  • I LOVE THIS MOVIE!! It is such a heart-breaking, beautiful film that (Im not afraid to admit) made me a bit emotional. If you are Indian you will DEFINITELY love this film.

  • Irrfan Khan rocked this movie so did Tabu. Superb!

  • tabu is by far the finest indian woman i have ever seen! she seems like she would be a very loyal and sweet wife. she actually is probably on my top 5 as the finest women to me. her acting is awesome too. but as for this movie, it's one of my favorites too. great stuff but now i have to read the book since everyone here says its better or more understanding.

  • Look out prity zinta, Katrina Kaif, Vidya Balan! Tabu is a better actress though!

  • I love all of Mira Nair's films, but this one is the BEST!

  • One of the most touching films I've ever seen. It captures your emotions before you know what hit you.

    One word sums it up...beautiful.

  • I love this movie so much. So pure and beautiful.

I love that line, "You remind me of everything that followed. Everyday since then has been a gift."

Teaches you to live each day as though it were your last.

  • this movie is one of the best movies ever...about parents and life. kal penn does great in this...one of those movies that makes u want to think about life. love it.......just spectacular.

  • i read the book and i didnt really expect it to be like this lol but its still good

  • I watched the movie a week ago. It was very nice and brought back memories of how our parents similarly travelled out from India to Singapore to seek a better life. And similarly like the character Gogol, i too hated my name. eventually, i managed to find peace with it and grew to accept it.

  • you have a wonderfull name!

    don't wear it out! =D

  • This is a stunning movie. Breath-taking. It has made me cry all afternoon. One of the most beautiful films ever made.

  • This was the best movie I have ever watched.

I saw it on HBO for the first time last night. I have never been so moved by any movie before.

  • same here.. never cried so much either

  • all india movies make you cry, is better than lifetime channel

  • I loved this movie. It made me cry so much...It was great. I watched it for school and then went home and ordered it on demand so my family could watch it and I could watch it again. It has a very good idea.

  • Someone please post this movie or could anyone tell me where I can see this movie online for free...Im in college we dont have HBO....I had it at home *tear*

  • why are so many people racist?

  • i met the author of this book today..she is such a pleasant person!! n very pretty one too.. cant wait till i c this movie!!

  • What a marvelous movie! I saw it on HBO yesterday and was mesmerized. I had so much farmwork to do but I couldn't budge from that screen. Unbelievable. Karen Devaki

  • I saw this film for the first time over the weekend and it was AMAZING!!! One of the best films I have ever seen. Made my happy and sad....yes, I shed tears....overall, GREAT FILM!!!

  • A major surprise. I loved this movie. I wish it had had a broader release.

  • this movie is amazing

  • The Namesake is the only decent film Kal Penn has every done everything else he's been in has been complete and utter garbage

Van Wilder, Harrold and Kumar, A lot like love, Epic Movie, Superman Returns in which he only had like one line in the whole movie) ALL OF IT COMPLETE TRASH Now he's playing a boring predictable Indian doctor (An Indian doctor how cliche is that?) on House

I don't hate Kal Penn I just hate almost everything he's done.

  • he did all of that?!?!? I hate those epic movies...Superman Returns was not so good..Harold and Kumar was funny though..never seen van wilder..

  • Those movies were very funny and equally as good if you like comedy. Obviously you don't. Maybe they had bad ideas, but they were hilarious. This movie was good though. You don't have to put down other movies he's done. I bet you haven't even seen all of them if any at all.

  • @Zain844 In one of his interviews he has explained why he did those roles. As an Asian or more specifically Indian actor it is hard to find a breakthrough so accepted whatever came his way only to show that he was serious about being an actor. And he did get noticed. If he had been rejecting movies he wouldn't be in people's memory or would be thought too uptight. Indian actors have Bollywood but for a person who has grown up in America I think he'd want to work in an ambience he knows well.

  • @ashwinimuley9 Kal Penn is like Sidney Poiter was back in the 60s and 70s he accepted virtually any role available for his nationality but the difference is Sidney Poiter is a much better actor.

That's the thing, it's not just because he's indian that he can't get good roles. He's just not that good an actor.

  • Great book. Really good book!

  • This movie was so inspirational. It made me actually want to research my culture. I loved it very much.

Fuck all you haters. You know what you can suck on.

  • great movie...!

  • randomly bought this movie at my local convenience store as one of the remaining choices (i've bought up all the good ones). ironically, to my surprise, this is by far one of the best films i've ever seen.

  • This movie is without a doubt a masterpiece. Kal Penn's best performance, and even though I've only seen bollywood movies by Irfan Khan, I believe this is also his best performance. Put simply, this movie is and will always remain a masterpiece.

  • I went to the library to see if they had this book but it was already checked out. I was pretty excited about reading it too. This kind of reminds me of Siddhartha. The whole journey and self-discovery theme.

  • ^gayest comment ever directly above mine^<
